Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10/08/10

Good morning, it’s Friday, October 8, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

Current TV has tapped famed game designer Will Wright (“The Sims”) to help create a futuristic new TV series scheduled for Q1 2011 that will encourage viewers from around the world to join an online network to aid in the creation and plotting of the show. Tentatively titled Bar Karma, the social network will provide a communication platform developed by Wright that will allow producers to ping the crowd for input regarding the storyline and set designs, offering the ability to vote on prospective storyboards and plot twists. Worldwide Biggies’ Albie Hecht, a former top executive at MTV Networks, will executive produce (excellent Albie!!).

As promised, Facebook continues to improve sharing controls. The social network has tackled a huge segmentation problem with an improved release of its Groups feature, which allows you to gather different sets of friends into buckets to make it easier to share news with specific groups of family, friends or colleagues and more importantly, limit access to your posts to the appropriate people. The software allows you to see who’s online at the moment and maintains conversation threads so everyone will be on the same page. The problem here is that, like any other Facebook feature, every user on the platform is thrown into the Groups feature, meaning that anyone can set up a Facebook group and add anyone they want unless they opt out. The potential for spam is staggering. Facebook has also released an “Applications You Use” dashboard that gives you a comprehensive overview of the applications you have authorized and spells our how and when these third parties have last accessed your data. Finally, the far-reaching site has added the ability to download profile information, messages, wall posts or status updates to your desktop for future reference – a simple tool that may turn out to have serious implications in the courtrooms of tomorrow. Facebook shunned the spotlight that peered into the dirty secrets of its founding with the release of the well-realized “The Social Network” last weekend. With these new releases, it still doesn’t appear to be quite ready for its close up as a social networking tool adults with complex private lives can use, but at least it’s heading in the right direction.
