Good morning. It’s Friday, October 5, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.  Here is the corrected version of today’s edition.

Sony Pictures Television (SPT) and mobile gaming company, ZeptoLab UK, are partnering to develop a live-action TV game show based on ZeptoLab’s physics-inspired game, Cut the Rope. Under their new partnership, SPT will also have a first look at future properties developed by ZeptoLab for live-action game shows as well. Cut the Rope to date has been downloaded 250+ million worldwide.

JumpStart, an educational game company formerly known as Knowledge Adventure, enters into a deal with DreamWorks Animation SKG to develop online and mobile learning adventure games based on the studio’s popular movies. This week marks the launch of new online and mobile games based on the Madagascar franchise, including Madagascar Online, a virtual world featuring learning adventures within the JumpStart ( www.jumpstart.com) universe. Also debuting this week is the Madagascar Preschool Surf ‘n Slide learning game for iOS and Android platforms. JumpStart is currently developing a new gaming franchise inspired by How to Train Your Dragon. JumpStart is a subsidiary of US-based Knowledge Holdings. Under the name Knowledge Advneture, the company was best known for its JumpStart, Math Blaster and SuperSecret brands.

LICENSING

Wildbrain Entertainment, which is part of DHX Media, enters into a deal with SkyVu Entertainment, a mobile gaming company, to develop a consumer products and licensing program for SkyVu’s popular action/comedy mobile game franchise Battle Bears. With 18+ million downloads to date; the game has 150,000+ daily active users. SkyVu co-founder, Ben Vu, originally developed Battle Bears as a screenplay when he was an animation student at CalArts.

DreamWorks Animation SKG appoints Bulldog Licensing as the UK Agent for its next three CG animated theatrical releases, Rise of the Guardians (November 2012), The Croods (March 2013) and Turbo (October 2013).

Saban Brands will head to Brand Licensing Europe later this month where it will showcase its Power Rangers brand, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2013 with the new series Power Rangers Megaforce, the popular Paul Frank lifestyle brand and a new 2D animated preschool series based on its iconic Julius Jr. (26×30 or 52×11), as well as its recently acquired Digimon brand, which includes the new series Digimon Fusion. Additionally, Saban Brands is re-introducing the 1980s furry transforming creatures, Popples.

In other Saban Brands licensing news, the company continues to expand the Paul Frank brand as it signs on new licensing agents including Team Licensing (Germany, Austria and Switzerland), J&M Brands (the Benelux) and Plus Licens (Scandinavia and Eastern Europe). Additionally, Saban Brands has also appointed new Paul Frank worldwide licensees, such as: Play Imaginative (vinyl figures); Pan Am (travel-inspired bags with special edition linings); Spidi (high end camera accessories); Najarian Furniture Company (furniture line); and Ethos (sporting goods). Furthermore, In Europe, Saban Brands partners with TV Mania as the Paul Frank master apparel partner for teens and adults in the UK, France, Germany, & Austria, TWC (watches pan-European) and Sky Brands, (bedding and home accessories for Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland).

MARKETING

Discovery Communications and Wendy’s team to launch an Animal Planet-themed augmented reality game as part of a new Wendy’s Kids’ Meals promotion beginning Monday, October 8. The promotion will see Wendy’s offering Animal Planet-themed Kids’ Meal toy premiums, featuring an augmented reality overlay. With the purchase of a Kids’ Meal, customers will receive an Animal Planet premium featuring one of five animals (a dog, cat, parakeet, chameleon or fish), each toy showcasing a trait of the specific pet. The augmented reality experience features the same pets received in the Kids’ Meal and allows kids to play entertaining educational games from a desktop, as well as a mobile device via iTunes and Google Play. Each game incorporates each animal’s natural play patterns. Additionally, during this promotion participating Wendy’s will distribute coupons for a special offer on Animal Planet products, available at Toys “R” Us. Wendy’s will support the Animal Planet Kids’ Meal promotion with in-restaurant marketing in 6,000+ of its locations nationwide, which will feature signage, branded Kids’ Meal bags and window clings, as well as a presence on www.wendys.com .

Jimmy Fallon (Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, SNL) will guest stars in a new hour-long iCarly special, iShock America, premiering tomorrow night, Saturday, October 6, at 8p on Nickelodeon. The special also includes a cameo appearance by Tina Fey (30 Rock, SNL). In the episode, when Fallon mentions iCarly on his late night show, Carly and her friends dedicate a web show to Fallon featuring spoofs on some of his popular skits. Then Fallon invites them to appear on his show. When Gibby has a wardrobe malfunction  it could be the end for iCarly. Check out a clip at http://vimeo.com/50725980.

In other Nickelodeon programming news… the network will premiere the second season of the new version of its popular game show Figure It Out on Monday, October 15 at 7p. Hosted by Jeff Sutphen (BrainSurge), the new season of Figure It Out is comprised of 30 new episodes and features a range of celebrity panelists including Cody Simpson, Tony Hawk, Rachel Crow, Metta World, Candace Parker, Noah Munck and Ariana Grande  and Nickelodeon’s classic Slime. Figure it Out airs on the network Monday through Friday at 7p.

BBC Worldwide America Sales & Distribution inks its first sale to Starz Kids & Family for the kid/tween/teen-targeted series, Wingin’ It and Sadie J. The popular shows will air on the network’s Six Block programming franchise, with Wingin’ It set to premiere on March 1, 2013, followed by the debut of Sadie J in the block on September 1, 2013. Temple Street Productions‘ teen-targeted comedy, Wingin’ It, revolves around a reckless angel-in-training sent to Earth to earn his wings by transforming a hapless kid into the most popular in school. Sadie J, is the story of Sadie Jenkins, the only girl in her big family, as she makes the sometimes awkward journey from tomboy to a more girly girl. Wingin’ It is created by Frank Van Keeken (Kids in the Hall, Mad About You), and executive produced by Ivan Schneeberg, David Fortier and Van Keeken. Sadie J is executive produced by Gina Cronk (Tracy Beaker Returns), with Paul McKenzie (My Almost Famous Family) producer, and the series is written by Robert Evans (The Green Green Grass).

Jewish Life TV (JLTV) will air classic episodes of Sesame Workshop‘s Shalom Sesame! beginning this Sunday, October 7 at 9a. Featuring the Sesame Street Muppets in Israel and introducing kids to Jewish culture and Hebrew, the episodes feature special appearances by celebrities including Nell Carter, Bonnie Franklin, Tracey Gold, Alan King, B.B. King, Anne Meara, Mary Tyler Moore, Sarah Jessica Parker, Mandy Patinkin, Itzhak Perlman, Joan Rivers, Paul Schaffer and Jerry Stiller. Channel One News, the teen-targeted news network that is available in middle and high schools across the US and an Alloy Media + Marketing company, launches OneVote 2012, marking the fifth time the network has held the largest student mock-election in advance of the national Presidential election. OneVote is designed to provide tweens/teens with the civic educational experience of the electoral process, while also encouraging them to express their opinions. Channel One News will deliver topical news and special segments throughout the fall, to enable students to make an informed decision in the mock election. Remember many of these kids will be eligible to vote in the 2016 election. OneVote expands its offerings this election year with election focused interactive content available through Channel One Interactiv, the company’s partnership with global education company Promethean. Additionally, OneVote will extend to upper elementary school kids in grades 3-5 through its Interactiv Jr. program and will allow younger students to participate in the mock election for the first time. The new digital platform will offer educators in-classroom activities that are aligned to current events and the Presidential race. OneVote invites students to cast their vote for the next President of the United States at http://onevote.channelone.com/ from October 22-26, 2012. The results will be announced during a special broadcast on November 1. Additionally, classrooms currently utilizing Channel One InterActiv will also have the option of conducting the poll using Promethean’s Learner Response devices.

Canal+ acquires the French-language rights to the animated preschool series Rastamouse for France, where the series will be known as Rastasouris, in a new deal with DHX Media. Based on the popular books by Genevieve Webster and Michael De Souza, the Rastamouse TV series launched on CBeebies in January 2011. The series is a Rastamouse Company Production for CBeebies, Rastamouse is produced by Greg Boardman and Eugenio Perez of Three Stones Media, in association with Wales’s Dinamo Productions, London-based Little Roots and DHX Media, which handles worldwide TV sales (excluding the UK) and worldwide licensing and merchandising.

CCI Entertainment solidifies two new pre-sales with The Movie Network and Movie Central in Canada for Emma’s Wings, the first in a series of the girl-targeted and horse-filled Bella Sara movies. Other pre-sales include Entertainment One for North America DVD and digital rights, Universal Pictures France, and WVG for DVD distribution in Germany. CCI Releasing is representing the animated feature worldwide and is looking forward to bringing the film to Mipcom 2012. The movie is being produced Magical Horses, formed by Entremedia Digital Films and Buffalo Gal Pictures. CCI Entertainment and Telegael will also contribute on the production side. Created by Gitte Odder Braendgaard, Bella Sara is set in a fantasy world where creative play is encouraged. The property collectible cards feature a number of horses that provide an access point to the Bellasara.com ( www.bellasara.com) virtual world. The licensing program also includes books, toys, apparel and products in other categories.

PGS Entertainment and A Squared Entertainment (A2) enter into a deal under which PGS will distribute A2’s existing properties worldwide. Founded and headed by Amy and Andy Heyward, A2’s programming content includes The Secret KidVenture Club (26×30, and 26 webisodes)  featuring Warren Buffet as a financial mentor to a group of kids; Stan Lee’s Might 7 (1×75)  an animated feature and pilot of a 26-episode series starring Stan Lee and a group of aliens who work to protect Earth, while the aliens try to get back to their own planet; Rainbow Valley Heroes (13×30)  a preschool series that follows the adventures of a fleet of rescue trucks that come to life and teach viewers about friendship, safety and knowing right from wrong; Martha & Friends  showing kids how to do various projects on their own; and Gisele & the Green Team  starring an animated Gisele Bundchen with a group of girls who lead double live as supermodels turned superheroes to save the environment. Later this year A2 and PGS will also unveil four new projects they are working on together.
