Good Morning, it’s Friday, October 5, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

Social networks continue to prove useful as fundraising tools. MySpace is offering integration with PayPal‘s electronic fund transfer service to help non-profits and political candidates raise funds through the site’s Impact Channel. Impact connects users with volunteer opportunities across the country, runs opinion polls, registers voters and aggregates political news. It also contains a link to the MySpace/MTV Presidential Dialogues event.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
NBC Universal
and Sony Pictures Television are stepping up to play central roles at CES next year, as the show becomes more focused on the content side of the entertainment business. NBCU will become the consumer electronics mega-show’s first official broadcast partner, debuting a variety of interactive and digital programming. Sony will showcase both electronics and content, participating in the new ContentCES attraction with EchoStar, Intel, Microsoft and others. The show is scheduled to return to Las Vegas January 7-10, 2008.
 
The premiere episodes of The CW‘s new primetime series Aliens in America and Life is Wild as well as returning shows Everybody Hates Chris, Girlfriends and Supernatural will be available as free downloads on iTunes. Each episode is available for free for one week following its debut.
 
Lifetime is also promoting the premiere of its new Friday night reality block on October 12, offering complementary premiere episodes of Lisa Williams: Life Among the Dead and America’s Psychic Challenge on iTunes and Yahoo TV a week before they air.
 
MTV Networks Nickelodeon Kids and Family Group released digital versions of two classic board games, a SpongeBob SquarePants edition of Monopoly and a Dora The Explorer version of Candy Land. The games are available now online on nickarcade.com and will retail on CD-ROM October 15.
 
National Geographic Digital Media launched a widget powered by Clearspring that enables Nat Geo video footage and images to be embedded on personal web sites. Email and embed options make it easy to share the code with others directly from the application.
 
Santa Monica-based Martini Digital Entertainment launched a new mobile programming service Juvee! Mobile with 9 channels of original content targeting the 18-34 male demo. The content is available to Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T subscribers with video-capable phones.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Social networking site Bebo and AOL have partnered to enable AIM messaging to be delivered seamlessly between the two services. With 38 million registered AIM users, the integration should help Bebo capitalize on trend popularized by sites such as meebo.com, which powers IM across multiple environments. AIM version 6.5 also launched this week offering a variety of new social tools.
 
Media search platform Pixsy signed a deal with Veoh Networks to power video and image-based search on the site. Pixsy touts the ability to update its search database up to the minute to capture all the latest user generated fare. Veoh is one of the fastest growing and the best-supplied video platforms on the web, reporting 18 million monthly unique users.
 
Famed tech blogger Dan Lyons a.k.a. Fake Steve Jobs, who once guarded his anonymity carefully, is embarking on a book tour to promote Options: The Secret Life of Steve Jobs. Just in case casual book shoppers haven’t heard of the Forbes editor being outed, it’s being written under his nom de plume.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
A class action lawsuit has been filed against Target claiming its website is inaccessible to blind users. Screen reading based interfaces and audio-based verification tools, necessary for security measures, are available to web developers but until recently have been overlooked by major sites.
 
Digital Art Services
, a small advertising company based in Great River, N.Y., is suing Verizon Communications for pumping up the subscription numbers of its FiOS fiber-to-the-home TV services. Digital Art is alleging it had to pay for FiOS customers that don’t exist. Verizon recently reported signing up its 500,000th customer.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
The FTC approved Yahoo‘s $300 million purchase of advertising network BlueLithium, the fifth-largest online ad network, after less than a month of consideration. Meanwhile the Google/DoubleClick deal continues to be under review.
 
To increase awareness for the new season of Epic Conditions and the new series Weatherventures, The Weather Channel (TWC) is giving visitors to the lower level Dining Concourse of Grand Central Terminal in NYC free Wi-Fi access for a limited time. As patrons log on to the internet, the home page will be a promo for TWC and a preview of these two programs. The promotion was brokered by TWC’s strategic media agency Media Storm. Both shows debuted on TWC October 1.

Unilever and Sunbeam signed on as national sponsors of a cross-platform marketing collaboration for The Ellen DeGeneres Show between AOL, Warner Bros. Television Group and Telepictures Productions. Fans can go to Ellen’s AOL-based site to upload reasons why Ellen should visit their hometown. 
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Many of the broadcast networks new fall shows aren’t cracking Tivo‘s top 50 season pass titles. Only ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy spin-off Private Practice and NBC’s Bionic Woman remake have registered on the list so far, ranking #18 and #43 respectively. Meanwhile the top 10 are largely the same this year over last, with the order differing slightly. Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives and House rank as the top 3.
 
Online advertising revenue exceed $5.1 billion during the second quarter according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers, bringing the first six months of 2007 to a total of nearly $10 billion. That’s a growth rate of 27% compared to last year. Search accounted for over 4.1 billion or 41% of the total.

shuffled its Board of Directors accepting the resignation of Armen Geronian and Gordon Berry to make way for Greg Smith, President and founder of The Solution Film Group; Douglas Polinsky, President of Great North Capital Corp. and Denis Yevstifeyev, analyst for American Eagle Outfitters.


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
 

Saturday Night Live rap-inflected digital short named “I Ran So Far” is back up on YouTube after being pulled from NBC.com and NBC’s YouTube channel. (Apparently it was taken down because the piano riff sampled a track of Irish electronic music artist Aphex Twin without permission.) It depicts a wild night out with Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who made news at a recent appearance at Columbia University when he claimed there were no gays in Iran. The video stars Adam Levine from the pop group Maroon 5 and SNL cast member Fred Armisen with a cameo of Brokeback Mountain star Jake Gyllenhaal thrown in for texture. What’s really interesting about this is that NBC didn’t need permission to air the short on September 29 because it fell under the “ephemeral use” clause of copyright law. Subsequent airings and online streaming are a different story.
