Barnes and Noble is making its most compelling run yet at the Kindle by adding color to its Nook e-Reader. Kind of a bridge between the iPad and a monochrome eReader, the Android-powered NookColor sports a 7-inch touchscreen perfect for viewing video, browsing websites, checking email and playing games. Social features like B&N’s “LendMe” app allows users to lend books to friends or cut and past passages from books to post on Facebook or Twitter. Personalization features allow you to make your own mark on the interface, including changing backgrounds and color pallets. B&N is also launching a developer’s program to encourage new applications for the device with its own “curated” app store; Pandora, Lonely Planet and Howcast have already developed apps for the NookColor.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
BBC America’s new North American-focused site is kicking off its coverage of the midterm elections with a live video results report, premiering Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. ET. The show will be co-anchored by Matt Frei and Washington Correspondent Katty Kay from the site’s D.C. studio and will feature commentary from former Nightline host Ted Koppel and Time Magazine Washington Bureau Chief Mike Duffy.
 
Digital Works@NBCU
(formerly NBC Digital Networks) has recruited Dr. Ruth Westheimer to guest blog in front of the camera about life between the sheets for the over 50 crowd for NBC’s new boomer lifestyle site LifeGoesStrong.com. One of a group of middle-aged focused sites, LifeGoesStrong launched in May of this year and currently attracts some 1.5 million uniques/month.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Bellevue, WA-based Visible Technologies launched a new technology platform yesterday to help brands not only to listen in on how their brands are being represented on Facebook and Twitter but also to extract measurable business value from these social media conversations. The software collects and analyzes data utilizing extensive filters, customized reporting and individualized dashboards with results organized by relevance.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Kantar Media announced it will soon integrate the contextual ad component of the new Google TV service with the Return Path Data (RPD) from its DIRECTView product to enhance optimization of its ad placements. Part of ongoing effort to partner across platforms, the integration will help support ad inventory from DirecTV, soon to be available via Google TV Ads. Microsoft also announced it would integrate DIRECTView RPD on its Admira on-line ad marketplace.
 
As research continues to pour in on the importance of good creative in the online video space, video ad platform AdoTube announces a real-time creative optimization solution for in-video ads this morning. The company’s Creative Studio Wizard will allow advertisers to test, optimize and switch up creative mid-campaign by choosing among set creative templates. AdoTube is also staffing in-house creative executives to help design new campaign elements on the fly.
 
Adnetik struck a deal with online video platform adap.tv to extend its Audience Investment Management system to online video advertising. The collaboration offers Adnetik a real-time bidding solution for online video, helping advertisers seamlessly buy targeted pre-roll video ads from adap.tv’s real-time bidding interface.
 
Mobile messaging company Sybase 365 has partnered with celebrity-themed entertainment platform MogoTXT to launch a mobile ad solution that enables targeted advertisements into text messages written to fans by NFL, NBA, FIFA and MMA athletes who are on MogoTXT’s mobile and online service.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
SeaChange and icueTV struck a partnership integrating SeaChange’s Watch & Buy t-commerce app with icueTV’s interactive application solution. The integration enables cable operators to leverage their existing VOD infrastructures to give viewers the ability to purchase movies and related merchandise through their VOD interface and remote control.
 
Local TV station group Lin TV reported positive Q3 results, with political ads and digital boosting net revenues by 27% y/y to $103.6 million. Digital revenues, including internet advertising revenues and retransmission consent fees, increased by 54% to $16.0 million, compared to $10.4 million for the third quarter of 2009.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

                      
While activity on Facebook remains steady throughout the day, the conversation tends to peak at about 3 pm ET, according to a three-year long research study by social media communications specialist Vitrue. The data also revealed that Monday through Friday shared a similar pattern of high volumes of conversation, with Wednesday being the peak. Weekend activity was dramatically different with lower post activity from fans and brands on Sunday versus all other days. The company analyzed Facebook posts from August 2007 to October 2010, looking at more than 1,500 selected brand streams representing 1.64MM posts and 7.56MM comments.

Interactive producer Worldwide Biggies has launched a new 99 cent 20-level game for the iPhone and iPod Touch named, Bigby L.A.P.D (the League Against Pirates and Dragons) as part of MTV Networks Addicting Games series. Young Bigby dons a blue bear suit with a rocketpack strapped to his back. A flash version of the game is also available at MTV’s Addicting Games site.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Former head honcho of Fox Interactive Media Ross Levinsohn has joined Yahoo as EVP of the Americas region, reporting directly to CEO Carol Bartz. He begins in Nov. and will oversee the company’s media group, ad sales and partnerships. Ross takes over for Hilary Schneider, who plans to leave Yahoo at the end of the year.
 
Fitness Magazine has named Christie Griffin as Digital Director. She will be based in New York, oversee editorial efforts on fitnessmagazine.com and help execute brand strategy across all Fitness digital projects, including mobile, apps, and tablet editions.

Boston-based e-commerce start-up The Daily Gromet (named after the ring used to reinforce an eyelet) is a crowdsourced online video site that profiles local businesses that have a compelling story to tell or cool product to sell. Founders Jules Pieri and Joanne Domeniconi’s idea is to turn people on to cool new companies or ideas that deserve to be recognized, and the site’s producers rely on suggestions and samples of products sent in from fans from around the globe. The tone of the daily webcasts, posted daily at 12 noon ET, are friendly and exploratory rather than critical or judgmental. But the site’s founders obviously take great care in the businesses they select and are often swayed by an impassioned plea from a loyal customer. Environmental, spiritual or artistic merits are given extra attention. Yesterday’s Gromet, Seattle-based hand dipped Beeswax Candle maker Big Dipper Waxworks, hits nicely on all three criteria.
