Cynopsis: Kids!
10/28/11

Good morning. It’s Friday, October 28, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

CBBC (UK) orders up a series from The Foundation Scotland, the production arm of Zodiak Kids, to produce the new kid-targeted sports competition series, Ultimate Sports Day (11×30), which will be televised just ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games.  Hosted by Ore Oduba (BBC Sport host, CBBC’s Newsround), the series will feature four regional teams of four youth athletes from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, competing to become series champions.  Each episode will test the teams’ sports skills through a series of unique Ultimate Events.  This nationwide competition will follow the kids’ story from their first sports trial through to the two finals and the crowning of the winning team.  Each of the four teams will be mentored by noted athletes including, decathlete Dean Macey for the England team; ice dancer Sinead Kerr for Scotland; sprinter Christian Malcolm (currently on Team GB) for the Wales team; and boxing champ Barry McGuigan for the Northern Ireland team.  Ultimate Sports Day will also other top sports stars including Team GB Olympian Triple Jumper Phillips Idowu, current men’s gymnastics star Louis Smith, former Team GB heptathlete and current 400 meters runner Kelly Sotherton and Winter Olympics gold medalist Amy Williams.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

UK-based Big Giggles and India-based Eden Animation Studio are partnering to develop and co-produce three kid-targeted TV series, as well as exploit these projects for home video and multi-platform licensing.  Big Giggles has set a US$6 million budget, initially, for the three series.  The three TV series in development are:

  • Mac & Co (52×11, budget $2 million)  a 3D CGI animated series that follows the adventures of a little red truck, Mac, and his friends, who all live at the Great Grille Truckstop.  Each episode the group solves problems and gets work done.
  • Noa; Sailing into Adventure (26×22, budget $3 million)  Noa, a rock ‘n roll loving Chinchilla, leads a group of exotic animals as they escape their grimy pet shop and build an ark to sail around the world helping other animals.  The series deals with environmental and ecological issues as well as those of endangered species.
  • Mindi the Mermaid (52×7, budget $1 million)  set underwater, this 2D animated series revolves around Mindi and her family as they face everyday issues of life in the deep blue sea in the lost world of Salt City.

LICENSING

Caroline Mickler Limited, the licensing agent for Moomin, completes a deal with giftware licensee Find the Three Daughters to design and supply Moomin glossy lip balm tins (circular) and peppermint tins (rectangular) for the UK.  Targeted to tween and teen girls, as well as women, both products will be available in a range of colors and designs featuring characters from the Moomin family and their friends.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon enters into a deal with ITV that will see the first two seasons of its live action series Victorious (33×30) and Big Time Rush (49×30) air in the UK on ITV terrestrial and digital channels beginning this month.  The series will air during peak timeslots in the mornings on weekends on ITV1, and after school times on CiTV, as well as in HD.  Season one of Victorious will launch on ITV’s channels this Sunday, October 30 and season one of Big Time Rush on Monday, October 31.  Both series will continue to run on Nickelodeon UK.  The deal continues ITV’s successful partnership with Viacom International Media Networks on past titles, which include Drake and Josh and SpongeBob SquarePants.

Disney and media company UTH Russia enter into a new deal to launch an ad-supported free-to-air Disney Channel in Russia early next year.  Under the agreement, Disney, through one of its subsidiaries, will acquire a 49% stake in the Seven TV network from UTH Russia.  Disney Channel will replace the current branding and programming of Seven TV.  At launch, Disney Channel will reach about 40 million households, which represents more than 75% of the measured audience in Russia. Disney Channel will air on broadcast stations in 54 large urban markets, including Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as hundreds of rural and remote cities and towns nationwide through other distribution agreements.

Disney Publishing Worldwide launches the first original app by author/illustrator/actor Mo Willems‘ and based on his Pigeon book series.  The new Don’t Let the Pigeon Run this App!, which features Willems’ voice as the curious and determined Pigeon, launches this week for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.  The app allows kids to create their own Pigeon stories and add their voices and drawings to the animated app.  Willems was key in the design, writing, and illustration of the new app, and in addition to voicing the Pigeon, he leads users through the app’s drawing tutorial.
