The FCC announced the formation of the Technological Advisory Council and released a whitepaper entitled Mobile Broadband: The Benefits of Additional Spectrum, laying out projections for wireless demand, the potential value of future licenses and the economic impact additional spectrum will have on the U.S. Spurred by the growing number of smartphones and tablet devices, the FCC is estimating mobile broadband traffic to grow by 35 times from current levels over the next 5 years, lapping the industry’s ability to keep up with demand for data by a factor of more than 3. “We are at an inflection point,” noted FCC Chairman at Thursday’s FCC Spectrum Summit. “Demand will soon outpace the supply available for mobile broadband.” The Commission has set a goal of re-allocating 500 MHz of spectrum for mobile broadband usage over the next 10 years and is hoping to convince broadcasters to start putting up spectrum for auction for this purpose; rules governing the auction are expected to be laid out during the FCC’s meeting on Nov. 30.


Yahoo launched a new custom program with American Express, building a microsite to offer Yahoo Small Business users articles, video interviews and access to various Amex OPEN connect products including AcceptPay online payment platform and its SearchMananger solution built to manage pay-per-click campaigns.


Enterprise video solutions provider Kontiki raised $10.7 million in Series B funding led by MK Capital and joined by New World Ventures and Cross Creek Capital, an affiliate of Wasatch Advisors.
Male-targeted CraveOnline has signed a deal to distribute the entertainment and tech-themed talk show RadNerd, hosted by Beau Ryan, Andre Meadows & Damien Beurer. The 15-minute show will be broken up into 4 segments, with new episodes debuting each Friday.

SeaChange International
and BlackArrow are teaming to jointly develop a targeted-advertising solution for multichannel video operators in North America. The companies are integrating SeaChange’s AdPulse On Demand technology and Adrenalin video back office suite with BlackArrow’s Advanced Advertising System to offer cable operators a plug-and-play dynamic VOD advertising ad solution.
Video ad network announced it reached a milestone this month, managing over one billion monthly global video views through its online video advertising platform., the #3 video ad network in Sept. in terms of reach according to ComScore, says it has experienced a 92% ave. monthly growth rate for video ad views since the launch of its video marketplace in Feb. 2010.
Seattle-based data reseller BlueKai struck a partnership with performance-based marketing company Efficient Frontier to match client keyword lists against intend data lists complied from BlueKai to better target display ads.


Amazon shares reached a new record after the company topped analysts projections, reporting a Q3 earnings jump of 16% to $231 million as revenue surged nearly 40% to $7.56 billion from a year earlier. Worldwide Media sales grew 14% to $3.35 billion and worldwide Electronics & Other General Merchandise sales grew 68% to $3.97 billion. The company still did not release actual Kindle sales numbers but did say the new smaller, cheaper $139 Kindle was the best selling model yet. The company also unveiled a new free tier of web services for developers or businesses.


Viacom has hired superstar appellate lawyer Theodore Olson to handle the appeal of the failed YouTube verdict, per THR, Esq. The company plans to file its appeal on Dec. 3, arguing that the U.S. District Court was erroneous in giving YouTube “safe harbor” status regarding allegations of copyright infringement.


Owners of larger screen connected devices such as the iPad are voracious consumers of media who don’t mind paying for content, according to new research from Nielsen. iPad users, who tend to be male (65%) under age 35 (63%) and have incomes of 100k or more (25%) regularly access TV shows (vs. 11% for the iPhone), Books (39% vs 13%) and Movies (32% vs 12%). iPad users also say they’re more likely to view ads that have interesting video content (49%) and enjoy ads with interactive features(46%), over-indexing compared to both iPhone and all connected device owners.
One in five (21%) of viewers aged 13 to 54 say they watch TV programs or movies using a videogame console system at least once a month, according to a new Knowledge Networks report about the Over-the-Top video landscape querying a panel of over 1,000 13-54 year olds. This includes viewing of DVDs and Blu-ray discs or using the system’s broadband connection to access content. DVDs still dominate the alternate-to-telecast space by a wide margin – being used at least once a month to watch movie or TV content by 62% of 13-54 viewers – with the next closest formats being DVR and streaming through a PC.

Patrick Toland has been appointed Managing Director, US of TBG Digital after ten years as co-founder of Incentive Networks. He will oversee US operations from the company’s recently opened San Francisco headquarters. Chris Cooper also joins as VP/Account Development, and Craig Walsey joins as VP/Business Development.
Media advertising platform MeFeedia has added Deep Dive Media Chairman Eytan Elbaz to its Advisory Board.


Some communities are lucky enough to have dedicated journalists who are willing to work for nothing (or next to nothing) to make sure that quality journalism doesn’t die on the vine. Crosscut is a non-profit Seattle-based regional blog (the name conjures up the city’s rugged logging past) that has built a toe hold in the community by commissioning in-depth stories about issues that are either glossed over or misunderstood in the mainstream press. The site pays freelancers anywhere from $25 to $300 for submissions and is lucky enough to have a number of old pros from Dover to rely (such as former staffers from the shuttered Seattle PI) for superbly researched articles. As most other local mediums, it is benefitting from ad dollars from contentious local races at the moment, but it has grown its advertising base impressively over the past two years enough to support it through thick and thin.
Corrections: Mike Rosenstein has been promoted to Director of Digital Content to run Digital at Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Digital, not Paramount Digital. Also, the entire Disney-Pixar line-up is not available for rental on VOD this month as “UP” is not yet available. We apologize for the confusion.
