NEW PROGRAMMING & DEALS

Step aside Microsoft and Sony – Nintendo is still in the game. The company announced yesterday its Nintendo 3DS and 2DS devices will feature the Hulu Plus app. The app can be browsed using the handheld device’s touch screen, and includes a Kids Lock parental control. Nintendo device owners can download the app for free, and use the 1-week promotion trial if they don’t have a Hulu Plus account already.

Digital media management company Yangaroo announced Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs‘ new music network Revolt, launching October 21, will use the company’s Digital Media Distribution System for music videos. Yangaroo’s web-based music delivery system makes it simple for artists and record labels to submit videos for possible airtime on Revolt.

Intel has joined The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers to help develop new energy and operations standards for the TV industry. Intel’s main role with the SCTE will be to help reduce energy costs, increase cable service availability and extend the lifetime of service equipment.

CONTENT MEDIA

Crackle started the third year of its Halloween horror film collection with Kill Count 3 today. Kill Count offers more than 50 horror movies on http://www.crackle.com/outreach/killcount for free until Halloween. The annual event will also launch a Facebook sweepstakes to give away a daily severed-head prop to a fan.

The YouTube channel that dubs movie and TV clips for laughs, Bad Lip Reading, is back with new material after a five-month hiatus. The latest video takes an episode of Game of Thrones and turns it into a fake trailer for a movie called Medieval Land Fun-Time World. So far it’s racked up almost three million views, but that’s still not even close to BLR’s NFL video that reached 41 million views. The videos can be watched at BLR’s channel.

Breaking Bad spoiler alert: YouTube will live stream a mock funeral for the character Walter White being held to benefit charity Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless, in partnership with Vernon’s Steakhouse in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the show took place. The event takes place October 19.

Travel guide company EpicQuest is pairing with the network Outside Television to create a six-episode documentary series, along with a redesign of its website. The show premieres Nov. 22, and takes viewers behind the scenes as EpicQuest accompanies clients on extreme adventures that span the globe. The new site includes videos from excursions.

Comedy Gives Back is partnering with video platform DailyMotion to live stream a 24-hour digital comedy telethon on Nov. 6. The charity event benefiting Malaria No More will feature acts from Dane Cook, Kevin Nealon and Reggie Watts. The stream will run live on www.dailymotion.com.

Tide teamed with Project Runway and Council of Fashion Designers of America to introduce a Tide Washable Program Thursday night, encouraging more wearable fashion for the average person. Tide challenged the Project Runway finalists to create high fashion that can be washed with Tide Pods at home. 

Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is producing its annual Programming Guide, which comes out on November 26 and will be sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers. MOBILE GAMING + APPS

VH1 has launched its first TV Everywhere app for iPhones and iPads. The app includes a three-in-one function that allows users to view video, site content and a social co-viewing aspect. VH1 is introducing the app by premiering CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story exclusively on the app until it airs on the channel on Oct. 21. The app will also include more pop culture content from VH1 with the new VH1 Shack that contains a slew of mini video series. Finally, the app integrates a Twitter and Facebook connect component that will allow app users to simultaneously watch episodes and discuss shows in real time with other fans.

On the heels of Twitter’s Direct Message revamp, the social bird may get an entirely separate DM app. All Things D reports the future Twitter message app is a possibility, and comes at a time when other message apps like WhatsApp, Line and Facebook’s outside message platform are reeling in millions of users. In other words: The DM overhaul is a push to stay competitive in the message app world – at a point when Twitter is about to peddle its stock to the public.

RESEARCH

AOL-Adapt.tv has topped comScore’s September 2013 U.S. Online Video Rankings with 3.7 billion video ads for last month. The latest survey has AOL beating out rival Google, which scored 3.2 billion video ads with mostly YouTube’s force. AOL-Adapt.tv also took first in the total number ad minutes at 1.6 billion; BrightRoll took second at 1.3 billion.

The BET Network recorded some major social media ratings for its BET Hip Hop Awards and Real Husbands of Hollywood, according to Nielsen’s SocialGuide. The BET Hip Hop Awards scored 2.5 million tweets for 6.8 million people, making it the third most tweeted telecast on cable besides sports; Instagram users posted more than 20,000 photos with the hashtag #hiphopawards. The Real Husbands of Hollywood brought in 240,000 tweets, making it the most talked-about fall comedy premiere.

EXEC MOVES

Hulu has named its newest CEO: Mike Hopkins. Hopkins has served on the Hulu Board of Directors since 2011, and was previously the President of Distribution at Fox Networks Group. Stand-in CEO Andy Forssell is leaving the company.

Hearst has named Neeraj Khemlani and George Kliavkoff as co-presidents of Hearst Entertainment & Syndication. Kliavkoff will continue to oversee Hearst Ventures and Khemlani will continue leading Hearst’s Digital Studios.

Twitter has hired J.J. Hirschle as the new Head of Retail Operations. Hirschle comes from Google, where he was the Director of Media and Entertainment.

Communications firm Allison+Partners has hired Corey Scott as its new Senior Vice President and Head of Design. Scott previously worked at Edelman as the regional Art Director and Design Lead.
