Good Morning, it’s Friday, October 12, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The internet is breaking traditional distribution models and one materially-minded girl is getting out in front of the trend. Madonna is firing her record label Warner Music Group and signing a new 10-year deal with concert promoter Live Nation reportedly worth $120 million that gives the company the right to distribute three studio albums, promote concert tours and sell merchandise in her name. With file sharing persisting and online music sales replacing only a fraction of lost sales, artists must leverage touring and merchandising revenues to make up for the shortfall. This could also mean new opportunities for web 2.0 start-ups.
TV Land relaunched its website TVLand.com adding full-episode streaming of classic shows it is known for on air including The Andy Griffith Show, Leave It To Beaver and Gunsmoke. A music player featuring songs, commercials and movie themes from past eras, classic movie trailers and clips of TV Land originals have also been added. Meanwhile a WAP-based mobile site is scheduled to launch Nov. 1.
CBS snapped up online gossip pub Dotspotter.com for $10 million in cash. The site combines celebrity gossip with social networking, allowing users to post comments, rate stories and share gossip about their favorite stars.
Videogame giant Electronics Arts is acquiring game developer Bioware/Pandemic from Elevation Partners for $860 million in cash and stock to bolster its lineup of games. The deal represents quite a return for Elevation, which invested just over $300 million in the game venture two years ago.
NBC will broadcast some 756 hours of HD coverage of the Summer Olympic games from Beijing next summer, almost doubling the 399 hours of HD coverage offered from Athens during the last summer games.
LifetimeTV.com will launch a weekly interactive video chat hosted by medium Lisa Williams immediately following the second-season premiere of her show Lisa Williams: Live Among the Dead at 9 pm ET.
kontentreal launches second season of e2: The Economies of Being Environmentally Conscious on Friday, October 19th narrated by Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt. A special 12-week Webcast of the series is available at e2-series.com beginning Friday, October 12th with each episode up for one week. HD-capable Vuze.com will sell the episodes about for $1.99 a pop about a month after they premiere.
Endemol USA will add a new channel called Lazy TV to the Next.TV platform featuring reality hits such as Deal or No Deal, Big Brother and 1 vs. 100. Next.TV, powered by Dave Networks, is an internet TV service due to launch later this month accessible from HP and Compaq Presario Computers.
Joost signed new content deals with a trio of creators:
- Multiplatform animation network Aniboom launched a channel featuring a selection of animated series and shorts
- TBS Europe will provide short form content from CNN International, Adult Swim and Turner Classic Movies
- Bollywood producer Eros Intl. will offer more than 200 movies and 600 music videos for the free service
Google Earth has added a feature allowing users to watch YouTube videos embedded in locations around the world. YouTube videos that are geo-tagged will pop up as you scroll across an area.
MyDamnChannel.com debuted a new Harry Shearer series Crescent City Stories taking a look at New Orleans after the Katrina debacle. Shearer, a longtime New Orleans resident, will feature the personal stories of four residents each week with a total of 5 episodes planned in the series. Come to think of it, isn’t that Harry’s voice we just heard on TVLand.com?
It looks like high profile copyright infringement lawsuits have had an unintended affect. A grassroots network of student activists calling themselves Students for Free Culture is popping up all over the U.S., advocating a loosening of copyright laws and freer exchange of content over the net. Their position is technology has outpaced copyright laws and it’s time for the government to revisit outdated statutes, according to The New York Times.
Cable operators are playing catch up in the race to match DirecTV’s pledge to offer 100 HD channels by year end, and many MSOs are getting creative to free up more bandwidth. Reclaiming analog spectrum, deploying switched digital systems (blacking out channels in neighborhoods that don’t watch them) and deploying more highly compressed mpeg 4 set-tops are some of the techniques being tried.
The Interactive Advertising Bureau released new guidelines to better define page views and impressions in rich media environments such as AJAX and JSON. Intended to be supplemental to previously released auditing and certification rules, the guidelines have been endorsed by the AAAA Digital Marketing Committee among other groups. The IAB also released a status report on the state of in-game advertising, leading up to seminar it will host on the topic in New York City on Nov. 6.
In-game ad firm IAG Worldwide signed a deal with Merscom to place ads within its catalog of casual games. Merscom publishes games online through multiple portals and platforms such as Xbox Live Arcade.
ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy was the most watched time-shifted show during premiere week ending Sept. 30, according to Tivo’s Stop||Watch ratings service, followed by CBS’ CSI, ABC’s Desperate Housewives, CBS’ Survivor: China and NBC’s The Office. NFL Sunday Night football on NBC got the top live rating while ABC’s Private Practice & Dirty Sexy Money and NBC’s Bionic Woman were the only new shows to crack the top 5 on any given night.
CNBC hired Dennis Kneale as Media and Technology Editor from Forbes, where he covered the internet, corporate raiding scandals and international business. He will make his first on-air appearance on Monday, Oct. 15.
Former Nielsen sales executive Steve Walsh joined Integrated Media Measurement Inc. as SVP/Sales. He reports to Tom Zito, CEO of IMMI.
Independent media consultant Tom Wolzein joined the Board of Directors of Tivo. Tom worked previously as a media analyst for Stanford C. Bernstein & Co. after a varied career at NBC.
Granada International got a life and hired Richard Life as its new head of factual, overseeing acquisitions and co-productions. Before coming to Granada, Life was head of factual co-productions and then head of programming at Channel 4 International.
Journalist Bob Garfield launched ComcastMustDie.com, a blog to vent his frustrations over his cable company Comcast. He’s inviting readers to log in their own complaints along with their customer numbers, thinking the company may actually read it and get back to them. If only it was that easy to get Comcast to stop price gouging, get better set-tops and add TBS HD across its footprint, so baseball fans who live outside of New England can watch the playoffs in HD as well.
