Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning. It’s Friday, November 22, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Pinterest launched Place Pins yesterday, so users can help others plan trips. Place Pins can be saved on a geo-location map for users to find restaurants, bars, or sightseeing destinations. The Los Angeles Times reported that Pinterest users already create 1.5 million destinations each day for a total of 750 million places. Foursquare, Stamen, MapBox and TripAdvisor are already on board to provide additional data on pinned locations.
Amazon announced yesterday that it would now feature movies from independent film company A24 on its Prime service. A24 is known for titles like Spring Breakers, The Bling Ring and The Spectacular Now. The movies will become available on Prime soon after they are released to the public on DVD and Blu-ray.
With Thanksgiving fast approaching, Cynopsis Media is interested in hearing what TV show (past or present) you’re most thankful for. One participant will win a $50 Amazon gift card. The winner will be announced on Friday, Nov 29. Deadline to submit is Thursday, Nov 28 at http://ht.ly/qPPQJ.
Univision debuted the first digital and social television integration for its 14th Annual Latin Grammy Awards show last night. Fans were able to interact with celebrities and ask questions through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and on a Google+ Hangout video, featured on the red carpet. Univision’s first winner of Nuestra Belleza Latina, Alejandra Espinoza, hosted the social media part of the show. Both Univision.com and LatinGrammy.com also streamed live backstage footage during the ceremony.
The New York Times has created a new 60-second news video series called New York Times Minute. New episodes are published at 6 a.m., noon and 6 p.m. every day, which appear on NYTimes.com and its video blog site.
AwesomenessTV premieres the third season of its series Runaways today, which has reached three million views. The five new episodes will be posted daily until Nov. 26.
Men’s entertainment network Complex TV debuted a new original show, RiFF RAFF Realm. Starring RiFF RAFF, the rapper highlights web clips while providing commentary with celebrity guests. A new episode will be available on Complex’s TV site every Thursday.
Yesterday, tech and ad safety company Integral Ad Science threw a spotlight on the issue of digital ad fraud- specifically, fake impressions caused by “bots.” The company revealed that a staggering 15 percent of impressions are made by bots, which costs advertisers $6 billion a year. Panelist and Magnetic CEO James Green said that ad exchanges should be more proactive in tackling this issue, and that Facebook’s FXB ad exchange is one of the safer bot-free exchanges.
Google just beefed up its dongle-device Chromecast in a way that’s sure to please Game of Thrones and Girls fans – by adding the HBO Go app. Chromecast already includes Vimeo, Redbox Instant, Netflix, YouTube, Pandora and Hulu Plus on its menu.
Shazam has unveiled Shazam Charts for the Amazon MP3 service, which will show users what songs are currently trending. The listing can be accessed online at amazon.com/shazam and in the Amazon MP3 store on Android, Apple and Kindle Fire devices.
Vimeo updated its iOS app yesterday with a Facebook newsfeed, an AirDrop feature and other improvements. AirDrop allows users to share offline videos with friends, and users can now share videos through the Facebook newsfeed.
The Xbox One officially hits shelves today to join the PlayStation 4, and a Verizon FIOS Innovation Index study found that one-third of those labeled as “hardcore game players” in the survey would go as far as to give up a car for six months to own one of the new consoles. The study’s results also showed 58 percent of gamers prefer to play games in the cloud, and 63 percent have a high interest in streaming video on a game console. The survey was conducted this month with more than 500 U.S. respondents over the age of 18.
PlaceIQ has hired Jason Shao as its new Vice President of Engineering, Elise Neel as Vice President of Data and Insights and Jim Ryan as RVP of Sales. Shao was formerly PulsePoint’s VP of Technology, Neel previously worked for Digital Analytix and Ryan was PlaceIQ’s RVP for Millennial Media.
Advertising tech company Centro, has hired Maggie Wells as Vice President of Publisher Brand Development. Centro has also brought on Ken Farbo as Atlanta’s Regional Sales Director.
Just after the Cynopsis Digital Measurement Summit last week, we caught up with Maker Studios‘ Head of Sales Jason Krebs to talk about what life at Maker has been like since the company bought Blip in September. The biggest change, says Krebs, “is that all the plans and projects are accelerated. It’s given us a better opportunity from a content and ad perspective. There’s no way to replicate sheer size and volume. It’s one thing to say you have a great show; but it’s much more beneficial to say you have [many] shows and a large audience who’s watching.”
By early 2014, Maker has said that it will organize and add to its content (which attracts more than 4.5 billion monthly views on YouTube‘s most subscribed channels) into more than twelve genres within four basic units (men, women, family, and entertainment) including travel, food and technology to better serve viewers and advertisers. Krebs points to health and beauty, comedy, pets and gaming as the categories he expects to grow in the coming year. Helping with that growth, of course, is Erin McPherson, who joined Maker last week as Chief Content Officer from Yahoo, where she was video chief. “Erin already knows what works and what doesn’t, so it’s going to be that much more special. And she’s as well known as I am. It can’t all be about Jason Krebs,” he jokes.
There’s been much talk that part of Maker’s strategy is to move some of their YouTube stars, such as PewDiePie and EpicLLOYD to stand-alone websites. “We look at the commercial feasibility of all of our channels, but we’ll never stop working with YouTube,” says Krebs.
