Cynopsis: DIGITAL
11/18/11
Good morning, it’s Friday, November 18, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
Sony is considering launching an online pay-TV service, reports The Wall Street Journal. The company has already approached several media companies, including NBCUniversal, Discovery Communications and News Corp., to negotiate the rights to offer their TV channels online. Under its proposal, Sony would stream the channels over the web and on to Sony devices including PlayStation consoles, TV sets and Blu-ray players. Furthermore, it is being reported that Sony does not want to mimic the channel packages that are available from cable operators. If it means that media companies, who have a history of being unwilling to offer smaller channel packages, would require Sony to pay higher fees to air their channels, Sony might launch their service by offering niche channels that currently struggle with getting fees from cable operators.
As it preps for expansion overseas in early 2012, Netflix has finalized a multi-year licensing agreement with Miramax to bring the studio’s library of content to future streaming subscribers in the UK and Ireland. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Netflix already offers Miramax films to its US and Latin America subscribers.
Roku has announced plans for international expansion. Consumers in the UK and Canada will be able to purchase Roku’s streaming players beginning in early 2012. On top of that, the company is also expanding its open platform to include support for region-specific channels.
Google Music, which was unveiled this week, has inked content deals with three of the four major music labels in the US, EMI Group, Sony Music and Universal Music (Warner Bros. is the holdout). The digital music service seeks to provide a competitive offering to iTunes and Amazon, and one way it will try to establish its own niche is through integration with Google+. Citing the strength of recommendations from friends driving purchases, Google said users on Google+ will be able to share a free full play of a purchased song with their friends on the social network. In addition, the service offering includes a new music store in the online Android Market, a music store for Android devices to be rolled out in the coming days and automatic, wireless syncing capabilities across Android devices.
Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment has signed content deals with YouTube and media company EQAL. For YouTube, POW! will work with digital studio Vuguru, started by Michael Eisner, to create a channel that will have programming focused around the company’s original content. The channel will go live in 2012. POW!’s deal with EQAL is to launch TheRealStanLee.com, a website centered around the comic book legend. EQAL has previously built websites for celebrities like Bethenny Frankel, J-Woww and Randy Jackson.
Univision Interactive Media’s coverage of the 12th Annual Latin Grammy Awards, via the UnivisionMusica.com online and mobile sites, resulted in strong online and social engagement numbers. The coverage achieved over 140,000 online plays the day after the event, while the site generated 5 million page views and 180,000 visits across both online and mobile. Furthermore, according to Trendrr.TV data, Univision’s broadcast of the awards show beat out the CMA Awards and the Teen Choice Awards in terms of generating social media activity.
In announcing its $750K angel round of financing, Postcard on the Run also revealed that actress Selena Gomez will join the company as both an investor and creative advisor. The free app for iOS and Android allows users to create customized postcards (for prices starting at $1.49) from their device and send them to anyone and anywhere in the world. The company handles all of the details in the production, packaging and mailing of the cards. The app also has a feature called Smell Mail, which does exactly what you think: add scents to your cards.
The online piracy bill that has been on the House floor for the past month has pitted big names versus big names. The proposed bill seeks to stem illegal online activity by empowering federal authorities to block service providers, search engines, payment processors and ad networks that they believe allow for such transgressions to take place. In one corner are media companies and Hollywood studios, who are in strong favor of the bill’s passage in order to protect their copyrights and bottom lines; in the other corner sit leading tech companies such as Google, Facebook, Twitter and eBay, who argue that such a bill would just lead the way to online censorship.
Online ad tech company Vizu Corporation has announced the completion of its integration with Adap.tv’s video buying platform. As part of Vizu’s “Value in Video” initiative, which seeks to provide real-time measurement and optimization of brand lift generated by video advertising, the integration will provide buyers in Adap.tv’s Marketplace the ability to measure and adjust campaigns directly within the video in order to optimize brand metrics.
Data from AnalyticsDNA finds that Solve Media’s type-in advertising platform delivers a 52% lift in brand awareness, as well as double-digit lifts for brand association (65%), recall (67%), favorability (38%) and purchase intent (24%). In fact, according to AnalyticsDNA CEO Young-Bean Song, type-in ads achieve seven times the brand recall and eleven times the brand awareness when stacked up against traditional banner ads. Type-in advertisements replace traditional CAPTCHA boxes by asking users to input information, such as a brand message or marketing slogan, in order to access web content or complete a form.
According to a report from Tribune Media Services, using data pulled from its entertainment and content info databases, consumers in the US have access to more than 100,000 full-length TV shows and movies that they can watch from a variety of devices on any given day. With that in mind, the report argues that the primary challenge facing media and tech companies is to provide a “one-stop” interface that helps consumers find entertainment content on any device.
Telemundo has launched the Deportes Telemundo App for the iOS. The free app provides up-to-date news, scores, statistics and game analysis for sports and teams covered by the network. The app also offers video clips of Deportes Telemundo programs, as well as a Twitter integration meant to connect users with Telemundo personalities and other fans.
Zodiak Active, the digital and branded content division of Zodiak Media Group, has appointed Robert Marsh as Managing Director of UK Operations. In his new role, Marsh will help Zodiak Active create, deliver and distribute engaging content, marketing campaigns and other multimedia services for UK brands and media clients. He will assume his position in January 2012. Previously, Marsh has received recognition for his experience in the digital development of TV programs, including being twice BAFTA nominated for The X Factor and The Apprentice.
Atari has signed former IWON.com president and Marvel Entertainment executive Gui Karyo to be its new Executive Vice President of Development & Operations. The hiring is a move designed to accelerate the growth of the company’s mobile and online strategy. At his new post, Karyo will be responsible for day-to-day operations of Atari’s product development, operations and Atari.com; and will report to CEO Jim Wilson.

Pulse News is a new personal favorite for the daily commute. It is a simple, but stylish, news magazine app that is available for free on the iPhone, iPad and in the Android Market. The app lets you select the list of sources from which you would like to receive content and information. The sources can vary not only in subject matter, but type as well; they can be big-time newspapers to blogs and social networks. Now here’s the cool part: it has the sweetest interface. Instead of just populating a list of news and content through clicks, the app employs a swipe and slide mechanism; swipe downwards to access each source’s gallery of news; slide the gallery sideways to see more headlines from the publication.
