Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning, it’s Friday, May 21, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
When a company as powerful as Google decides to enter the “last 10 feet” space it’s worth noting. Google and partners Sony, Intel and Logitech unveiled the Google TV platform yesterday, yet another integrated technology to be embedded in broadband-connected TVs, set-tops and Blu-ray players. Google TV keeps it simple – it runs on a version of Android and utilizes the Chrome web browser to offer integrated search functionality appearing on the same screen as TV programs. Google chose to introduce the product at its I/O Developers conference because it hopes to spur developers to create interesting apps for the platform; content sites will have to be redesigned to work on big screen TVs. Although there are already many competing to provide an app platform for the TV (Yahoo, Vudu, ect.,) whiz bang apps have yet to emerge and the reach for advertisers just isn’t there. Of course, Google’s interest in all of this comes down to just that. The search giant announced a $23 million series D round in NY-based Invidi Technologies earlier this month, a start-up that makes TV ads addressable by mining set-top box data. Google TV-enabled sets and devices are expected to go on sale this fall in U.S. Best Buy stores.
Given that most sports fans are stats junkies, sports programmers should find Google’s new TV platform a natural fit. Turner Sports/NBA joint venture NBA Digital demonstrated an app through the product’s Chrome browser at the I/O Conference yesterday that allows fans to view video highlights, scores and schedules directly from the games they’re watching. There’s also a button that allows you to save videos you stumble across for later viewing. Bryan Perez, SVP and GM of NBA Digital noted that Google TV has the ability to rise above other solutions because it’s based on the already popular Android platform. “It makes it easier for developers to write applications once that work for the web, phone and now the TV without having to start from scratch,” said Bryan in an interview.
iVillage has relaunched its Beauty & Style and Pregnancy & Parenting sites offering new interactive tools with expert beauty, infant, tween and teen advice. Lauren Luke has joined the Beauty & Style site, contributing make-up videos and monthly virtual makeovers. The latter’s “Tummyvision” allows expecting moms to visually track a representation of their baby’s development from conception to birth. Colgate will sponsor the iVillage Beauty site while pediatric nutrition brand Enfamil is the official launch sponsor of the Pregnancy vertical.
Univision Interactive Media unveiled “No Me Hallo” (Finding Myself) at the network’s upfront presentation yesterday, a romantic comedy made for Univision’s “Novelas & Series” web channel following the trials and tribulations of Luz Maria, a Mexican-American woman who is constantly changing jobs in search of her true calling. Univision also announced it has acquired exclusive Spanish-language television and digital rights to all Mexican National Soccer Team games, sewing up rights to all qualifying matches for the 2014 FIFA World Cup as well as friendly matches leading up the event.
The WB.com’s made-for-the-web romp Children’s Hospital has been picked up as a live action series for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block. Star Rob Corddry will have plenty of star power to accompanying him including Henry Winkler, Megan Mullally, Lake Bell, Ken Marino and Erinn Hayes. The show premieres on Adult Swim July 11 at 10:30 pm.
Yahoo struck a deal with Michigan-based marketing company Valassis to provide its clients with customized targeting solutions for the online media campaigns. Yahoo has been working with local marketers since the establishment of its Newspaper Consortium, consisting of over 800 member newspapers nationwide.
Cisco Systems announced a deal to acquire the Moto Development Group, the private design consulting firm that developed the popular Flip Video line of camcorders.
Comcast Media Center and thePlatform have collaborated with Nielsen to validate their online video publishing solutions used in clients’ “TV Everywhere” efforts. The process has successfully preserved Nielsen’s audio watermarks in order to maintain copyright protection for the online publishing of premium, ad-supported video content. Both Comcast and Time Warner Cable are using thePlatform to transcode and publish authenticated video to the web.
Worldwide media tablet shipments will grow from 7.6 million units in 2010 to more than 46 million units in 2014, according to research firm IDC, representing a compound annual growth rate of 57.4%. But tablets will never replace netbooks. In comparison, IDC expects 398 million portable PCs (distinguished by built-in hardware keyboards) to be shipped in 2014.
Android ad requests grew by 77% month over month, based on an analysis of April campaign and network data from Millennial Media and ads on the Android platform have grown 282% since Jan. Android’s OS impression share increased 5%, now representing 10% of its U.S. Smartphone impressions, making it the third largest smartphone platform. Despite a month-over-month decrease of 8%, the iPhone remained the leading OS on the Millennial’s mobile ad network in April with a 62% share of Smartphone impressions and a 35% share of U.S mobile impressions overall.
Google announced it is releasing a new version of Android for phones. Codenamed “Froyo” (an acronym for Frozen Yogurt), Android 2.2 will feature faster performance, Flash support and web-synced apps, along with an improved toolset for developers. Also music stashed in iTunes, iPhoto, Windows Media Player or other locations can be synchronized over the web using the OS, a feature added through Google’s acquisition of SimplifyMedia. The company says more than 50,000 apps have now been developed for the Android Market and that it activated over 100,000 new Android phones a day (up from 60,000/day in Feb.)
Google also says the consumer version of its new location-based social networking service SCVNGR is spiking after it opened the service to private users last week. (The game, a point-grabbing exercise like Foursquare, was previously focused on institutions.) Brands that have joined the service include Boston Celtics, Boston Globe, Journeys, New England Patriots, The New York Times, Universal Music Canada and Warner Bros.
MTVN introduced “VH1 To Go,” the company’s first Android app designed by Rhythm NewMedia and is launching it on Android before the iPhone version is released. The video-centric app allows users to watch videos and browse photos from current VH1 shows, music events and select past programming. It also offers first looks at upcoming episodes and new series in a dedicated “Sneak Peeks” section. An iPhone version is also due out, but not until this summer.
DirecTV has introduced a whole-home DVR set-top box that will allow saved HD programs to be streamed to multiple non-DVR set tops scattered throughout the home. No new hardware is required (existing DVRs will get a firmware update) but the feature will cost an extra $3/month.
Apple‘s iPad store has opened its doors in a number of foreign countries including the UK, France Australia and New Zealand, per Engadget. The iPad is scheduled to ship in Europe on May 28.
Msnbc.com unveiled a “Meet the Press” app for the BlackBerry, developed with Zumobi. It features shareable clips from the weekly news program and an interactive feature that allows users to send questions directly to host David Gregory.
Hyperlocal news venture Main Street Connect has assembled a diverse Board of Directors to oversee the company’s goal of setting up affiliate sites across the country. (The site has already launched several beta sites in the Fairfield County region of Connecticut.) Peter Georgescu, Chairman Emeritus of Young & Rubicam Inc., will serve as Chairman of the MSC board. Other members include Stephen I. Sadove,Haresh Tharani and Carll Tucker. Journalist Jane Bryant Quinn, a director on the board, is also Editorial Director for Main Street Connect.
Be careful where you post your doodles. What began as a humorous appeal for religious tolerance on South Park has led to protests in the streets and a nationwide boycott of Facebook, YouTube and other social networking sites directed by Pakistani authorities. The order came from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) yesterday – which consequently lifted the ban – but reports maintain that YouTube is still being blocked. Seattle-based cartoonist Molly Norris posted a cartoon on her blog and Facebook page a month ago naming May 20 as “ Everyone Draw Mohammed Day” as an act of solidarity for Matt Stone and Trey Parker, whose South Park episode depicting Mohammad in a bear suit was censored on Comedy Central after threats were made by the operators of RevolutionMuslim.com. The strip soon spawned a blog, a Facebook Page and a viral movement that has taken on a life of its own, (and which Molly has since disavowed.) The PTA said that it blocked more than 450 links containing derogatory material in all.
