Cynopsis: DIGITAL


Good Morning, it’s Friday, May 18, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Google unveiled a new “universal search” function that integrates text, photos, video, news, scanned books and blogs in a single list of results. The search engine will automatically check Google Video‘s archive and allow users to click on a “watch video’ link that will embed the video right on the search results page. Other video sites publishing clips or full-length versions also appear. Several companies have been working to improve video search on the net, but none with Google’s pedigree or market share.


CBS tried to give media buyers a sense of its revamped digital media strategy at its upfront presentation this week, built around distributing shows through a variety of sites via the CBS Interactive Network. CBS President & CEO Les Moonves showed a user-generated mash up of David Caruso one-liners from CSI:Miami, Ad Sales Chief Joann Ross appeared before the audience as her virtual self and the network introduced new shows decidedly edgier and more youthful in their appeal. In an effort to harness the promotional power of blogs and viral video, debuted a toolkit to enable users to embed or email their favorite clips of CBS’ new fall shows. 
The CW announced a new reality show Online Nation to provide a TV-based forum for young user-generated online content. The weekly show, from Room 403 Productions, will showcase the hottest blogs, viral videos and social networking pages and build interactive elements into the program to allow viewers see what users are saying to each other online.
HBO is employing viral marketing methods to promote its new comedy series Flight of the Conchords. Deep Focus helped devise a campaign that will distribute the pilot episode on several video sharing sites and allow users to embed the episode on blogs, web sites and social networking pages. Partner sites include MySpace, iTunes, Yahoo! TV, MeeVee, iFilm, Superdeluxe, Blip TV, Movielink, and
AMC and Variety teamed to create a new website devoted to covering film festivals throughout the world., named after the AMC original show hosted by Peter Bart and Peter Guber, is published by Reed Business Information and will take on Festival De Cannes (May 16-27) as its first assignment.
Major League Baseball, and Mobiqa introduced a new mobile phone system that allows fans to purchase baseball tickets via a cell phone. Tickets@Phone will send a barcoded message to the user’s cell phone that will be scanned at the gate for admittance to Washington Nationals, Oakland A’s and Pittsburgh Pirates games.
Midway Games will release a Blu-ray version of the action game title “Strangehold” for the Sony PlayStation 3, made in collaboration with film director John Woo, that includes a copy of Woo’s  Hong Kong classic Hard Boiled. The narrative of Strangehold picks up where the 1992 film left off.
Children’s publisher Scholastic kicked off a multifaceted campaign to promote summer reading with a website at its core. The site includes book logs, interactive activities and community features encouraging kids to share their passion for reading with others. Women’s Day and Selecciones magazines will contribute editorial and video content to the site.


Veoh Networks announced a slew of new content partners to add to its growing collection of online video. Veoh, closely held by a group of partners including Time Warner and Michael Eisner’s Tornante Co., has existing arrangements with CBS, Paramount, PBS and UTA Online and also syndicates partners’ videos to YouTube, Google Video and MySpace Video. New programming includes content from:

Billboard – featuring news, interviews and musical performances
Lionsgate – sneak peeks of the hottest current and upcoming movies
National Lampoon – comedic videos
Car & Driver – delivering news, reviews, and an interactive buyer’s guide
Road & Track – video-based road and comparison tests
Next New Networks – videos for DIY filmmakers, film lovers, cartoonists and comic books
National Lacrosse League – select regular season games as well as the Championship

Linden Lab founder Phillip Rosedale, creator of Second Life, projected exponential growth for the virtual world site in an interview with The Guardian as 3D rendering technology improves, kinks with Microsoft Vista are worked out and user interface gets better at initiating newbies into SL. He has a succinct way of explaining what users are actually buying when they purchase a plot of land in the online world: “What we are really selling you is computation. We are selling you CPU core. If you buy a 16-acre piece of land, which is about four city blocks, what you are renting is one processor.”


AOL announced plans to integrate its AIM instant messaging platform with a new version of AOL Mail, refresh its web portal in the U.S. and launch new portals in 14 countries over the next 18 months.
A federal appeals court vacated a preliminary junction filed by adult entertainment publisher Perfect 10 against Google for including thumbnail images of its content with search results. The court ruled thumbnails were permissible fair use of the material, even if the images themselves are pirated. 
The mobile phone industry is working to integrate GPS technology with today’s online social networking tools. Future phones will be able to track the physical location of users by satellite, so they can see where their friends are and search each other’s saved places.


WWP Group acquired 24/7 Real Media for $649 million. WWP will pay 24/7 share holders $11.75 a share, a premium of 30% over the company’s average closing price over the last 60 trading days. 24/7 provides advertisers and publishers with ad serving, targeting, tracking, search and analytics technology. The company became a takeover target after Google acquired DoubleClick, as competitors wished to re-level the playing field.
Starcom USA inked its first national upfront deal with Discovery HD Theater tied to set-top box data instead of Nielsen Research ratings. The buy is based on data processed my TNS Media Research culled from set tops mostly in California. Participating advertisers include Allstate, Best Buy and Buena Vista Home Entertainment. The companies will produce high-definition TV spots for Discovery HD and will be able to compare recall and other engagement metrics between HD and standard-def. commercials.


The Mayweather/De La Hoya fight generated 2.15 million PPV buys (1.2 million cable, 925k satellite), generating $120 million in revenue and breaking the previous record by over $13 million. Here are the top 5 PPV brawls of all time:
