Cynopsis: DIGITAL
05/11/12

Good morning. It’s Friday, May 11, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.

DISH Network has activated the “Auto Hop” capability for the Hopper HD DVR system, allowing subscribers to skip all commercials for most recorded primetime HD programs shown on ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC when viewed a day after airing. The Hopper HD DVR system is designed for the entire household, with features including the ability to record up to six shows at once while playing back HD content in up to four rooms. Auto Hop is an extension of Hopper’s PrimeTime Anytime capability that allows viewers to record all primetime TV programming from the four major networks with one click. The device automatically stores the recorded shows for eight days after they have aired. A viewer can watch a show with the Auto Hop option on starting at 1am ET, after a show has been recorded to the PrimeTime Anytime library. Auto Hop is not compatible with live broadcasts.

Microsoft has unveiled a new design and user interface for its Bing search engine, which now splits up searches into three columns on the page. The first column is populated with regular search results from the web. The second column, dubbed Snapshot, provides more/relevant information on specific search topics as well as actions that can be taken with that topic (e.g., restaurants and making a reservation). The third column, appearing as a sidebar on the far right (also called Sidebar), allows users to post questions about their search query directly to Facebook, suggests friends on Facebook who might know about that topic (based on what they have “liked,” their profile information, and photos they have shared), surfaces relevant web experts who have insight on that topic (based on what they have publicly blogged about and/or posted on social networks), and an activity feed comprised of Facebook posts and queries users have elected to share. Microsoft is rolling out the new Bing to users over the coming days; users can sign up to get advanced access here. A mobile-optimized version of the new Bing is also coming in the coming weeks.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Drawbridge, a start-up founded by a former Google AdMob scientist, has announced $6.5 million in Series A funding from Kleiner Perkins and Sequoia Capital. Drawbridge says it is developing a “self-learning cross-device” advertising solution that would bring “desktop-like targeting” to the mobile ad space. “Today, targeting in mobile display advertising is more about the device than the audience behind it,” said Kamakshi Sivaramakrishnan, Founder and CEO. “Consumers now have multiple touch points across various screens. We want to leverage this emerging user behavior and unlock the power of cross-device data to impact targeting in mobile.” Drawbridge’s cross-device advertising platform is currently in beta.

Mobile and web analytics start-up Mixpanel has closed a $10 million Series A round of financing led by Andreessen Horowitz, with additional investments coming from PayPal Co-Founder Max Levchin, Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff, and Yammer CEO David O. Sacks. As part of the investment, Andreessen Horowitz’s General Partner Peter Levine has joined Mixpanel’s Board of Directors. The start-up also revealed that it is on pace to reach 7 billion actions tracked in May. Mixpanel says it has nearly doubled the amount of actions tracked per month and increased revenue by over 50% since February 2012. The start-up boasts an impressive roster of clients, including new customers such as Viddy, Path, and Social Cam.

Vitrue has launched a Media Partner Program (MPP), aimed at allowing marketing clients of its Social Relationship Management (SRM) platform to select their social advertising platform of choice in order to buy ads on Facebook. As of right now, Vitrue has partnered with seven social ad solution providers (Involved Media, Marin Software, Nanigans, Optimal, SocialCode, Spruce Media, and Unified), and says additional partners will be added in the future. MPP members log into Vitrue’s cloud-based SRM platform to see information and metrics on a brand’s Facebook post. Community managers will have the ability to flag high-performing content and then notify media buyers. Media buyers will also have access to all Facebook post metrics in order to identify content that can be converted into Sponsored Story ads. Vitrue says its SRM will integrate numerous Facebook engagement metrics across paid, owned, and earned content to present a comprehensive social snapshot.

Swoop, a service that integrates relevant information about products and services (including in the form of sponsored content or advertising) into existing website content, has expanded its offering to several new online food and lifestyle publishers, including Cooking.com, iFood.tv, and a selection of food/drink blogs such as drinkoftheweek.com. Swoop’s pitch is that its service enables publishers to keep visitors on the site longer, as the product information, advertising, and local offers aren’t hosted on another site, but rather on a pop-up page that will appear when the visitor interacts with the integrated piece of content (e.g., a recipe page where clicking on the text description of the recipes would surface information on which products to buy, where to buy them, and local offers).

~ TECH DEALS, MERGERS & SKIRMISHES ~

Social media advertising firm SocialCode, a subsidiary of The Washington Post Company, has hired 15 members from the engineering team at Digg. In a post on its company blog, Digg said that its technical staff will be integrated with and augment SocialCode’s existing engineering team with development offices in San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. SocialCode CEO Laura O’Shaughnessey told The Washington Post in an interview that the teams will focus on developing products and services that gather and analyze data from social networks’ open graphs. Financial terms of the employee acquisition were not disclosed.

Mozilla is accusing Microsoft of impeding its ability to distribute the Firefox browser on some devices that are being designed for the upcoming version of the Windows operating system, reports The Wall Street Journal. Mozilla tells The Journal that even though Microsoft is encouraging companies to build apps for the new Windows 8 interface (featuring an extensive redesign), Microsoft isn’t allowing developers to make programs that would work “in a more conventional ‘desktop’ mode for Windows on ARM-based devices, where Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is the only browser that will work.” Microsoft has named the version of Windows 8 running on ARM processors Windows RT. It will have two “environments,” Metro, which is optimized for apps, and Classic. It’s the latter with which Mozilla has an issue. In a blog post, Harvey Anderson, Mozilla General Counsel, writes, “This matters for users of today’s tablets and tomorrow’s PCs. While ARM chipsets may be primarily built into phones and tablets today, in the future ARM will be significant on the PC hardware platform as well.”

TechCrunch is refuting claims that it is being sold. This denial ostensibly includes Engadget and the other, smaller AOL properties that would have fit under the AOL Tech banner that PandoDaily reported this week as being shopped for a $70 million to $100 million price tag.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

FreeWheel‘s Video Monetization Report for Q1 2012 finds that the Xbox 360 accounts for 28% all non-PC/Mac premium video viewing, while the iPad accounts for 27%. However, both devices still trail in terms of monetizing video content. PC/Mac had the highest monetization rates with nearly one video ad for each video view across all content lengths. The Xbox and iPad had 0.31 and 0.4 video ads per video view, respectively. However, FreeWhel says that with the rising volume of video views on these devices, the video ad volume on such devices should also increase over time as advertiser demand grows and viewers demonstrate ad tolerance. The data in FreeWheel’s report covers more than 11.6 billion video views and over 8.7 billion video ad views across multiple devices, during Q1. Other relevant data from the report includes:

  • The growth of mid-roll advertisements is outpacing that of pre-roll ads (115% versus 45%, year-over-year). Mid-roll also accounts for 23% of all video ad views online.
  • Completion rates for pre-roll, mid-roll, and post-roll video ads held steady despite reported increases in ad loads.
  • Video ad loads in Q1 2012 did not experience a seasonal dip from Q4 2011 (over 0.7 total video ads per video viewed in both quarters), which FreeWheel says usually occurs due to lower volumes of retail advertising and fewer product introductions in the market during the beginning of the year.

The third volume of Millennial Media’s Mobile Intel Series takes a look at mobile advertising in the finance industry. Among the interesting findings: Finance was the top global vertical on the Millennial Media platform in 2011, growing 300% from 2010 to 2011; 80% of mobile finance users own a smartphone (an increase of 55% year-over-year), and 37% of mobile finance users own a non-phone connected device (tablet, eReader, mp3 player, etc.); almost 50% of mobile finance users claim they will stick with a brand they like, and are 95% more likely to be influenced by a celebrity endorsement than the overall mobile audience.

Data from global media investment management firm GroupM predicts that the average U.S. internet user will spend $1,042 on e-commerce transactions in 2012, according to a report from eMarketer. GroupM projects a 10.4% increase in average consumer e-commerce spending in 2012, over 2011. This aligns closely with an eMarketer forecast over the same matter, which foresees a 10.5% growth from 2011 to 2012.

~ EXEC MOVES ~

Advertising technology firm The Rubicon Project has hired Brian Pike to be its new Chief Technology Officer, as well as Victoria von Szelinski to be its new General Counsel. Both Pike and von Szelinski held similar positions at Ticketmaster. A third addition to its executive team, John Slade, formerly VP/Product Management at Yahoo, has been named SVP/Product Management. At his new role, Pike will manage the engineering, product management, and technical operations teams that work on Rubicon Project’s real-time trading platform, REVV. As General Counsel, von Szelinski will oversee all legal initiatives, business affairs, and compliance matters. Slade will be responsible for leading the technology development and product releases for Rubicon Project.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Here’s a great website if you can’t think of a great gift idea and are running out of time (although I wouldn’t necessarily advise it for Mother’s Day): the SomethingStore. The conceit is simple. Pay $10 (free shipping in the U.S.) and in seven days you will receive something. You won’t know what it is until you get it, but the website guarantees that the item will be worth at least $10, per MSRP. Otherwise, it will refund the difference. Truth be told, the curiosity alone is what originally did it for me, and continues to do so today (the next time will be my fifth time).
