Cynopsis
5/11/07
Good morning, it’s Friday, May 11, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
As the lead-in to next week’s Broadcast upfront Week, here’s some early news from NBC – the network has given the high school football drama Friday Night Lights a green light for a second season. Despite its low ratings (season-to-date average 2.3 among A18-49) the show received critical acclaim and was championed by NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly. It is expected NBC will order a full 22 episodes of the show which is produced by NBC Universal Television Studio and Imagine Television. NBC also picked up five pilots for full series development: Bionic Woman from NBC Universal Television Studio; Chuck about a guy with a supercomputer brain recruited by the government, produced by Warner Bros.; Journeyman about a time traveling journalist from Twentieth Century Fox; and Life about a cop who returns to work after finally proving he was wrongfully convicted of murder, from NBC Universal Television Studio; and last but certainly not least – Lipstick Jungle from NBC Universal TV Studio about three highly successful women living and working in NYC.
Tonight’s Finales:

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~
Here’s the schedule for the five major English-language broadcasters:
Monday – NBC at Radio City Music Hall at 3p
Tuesday – ABC at Avery Fisher Hall at 4p
Wednesday – CBS at Carnegie Hall at 4p
Thursday – The CW at Madison square Garden Theatre at 10a, and Fox at the City Center at 4p
As in previous years, we’ll publish the morning of the upfront what the best guesses are for that day’s presenting network, and the next morning we’ll publish the official fall schedule and mid-season series.
Rumors swirling about other broadcast network pickups for next season. Remember at this point, these are guesses and watercooler chatter, tho in our business, this is considered a compulsory sport, so here we go:
- CBS will bring back two comedies – The New Adventures of Old Christine and Rules of Engagement; and a drama with Jimmy Smits (a nice addition to any schedule), while Close to Home may fall off the fall lineup. Jury is still out on Jericho.
- ABC to give an additional 13-episode order to Notes from the Underbelly, and perhaps 9 more of The Knights of Prosperity. Also look for the network to renew George Lopez and new drama Football Wives
- FOX will like bring back Brad Garrett’s ‘Til Death, and guesses are it will be paired up with Action News comedy, starring Patricia Heaton and Kelsey Grammer.
- NBC won’t bring back Crossing Jordan, Studio 60 or the Black Donnellys, while L&O SVU has already received the nod for next year, look for all three Law & Orders will be back (either on NBC or TNT). Scrubs will be on the shelf in case it’s needed.
- CW probably won’t bring back Veronica Mars, but 7th Heaven definitely has finished it’s run (remember last year it rec’d an 11th hour reprieve). New likelys include Reaper and Gossip Girl
Style Network presents I Propose a new docu-reality series that follows real grooms-to-be as they plan how to pop the big question. The half-hour series will debut June 12 as part of the network’s annual 21-Day Wedding Party and is produced by Stone & Company Entertainment.
A New York Supreme Court ruled Comcast can relegate the NFL Network to its sports tier, rather than offer it on a basic channel plan. The NFL Network filed the suit against Comcast claiming Comcast was violating its distribution contract with NFL. The court ruled in Comcast’s favor. Next step – Appellate Court, says NFL. “If this decision is upheld, the biggest harm will be to consumers. They will have to pay more for less.” Comcast’s position is it does not want to charge its full subscriber base extra fees to receive the NFL Network, particularly to those customers who aren’t interested in football. It would prefer to put NFL on its sports tier where customers agree to pay extra to see these games. When it does make that move to the sports tier, customers will have to pay an extra $5 a month to see the games. The sub base for the digital sports tier is 7 million; while the full sub base for Comcast is better than 21 million.
Fuse has renewed The Whitest Kids U Know for a second season, ordering an additional 10 episodes, reports Variety.
Soap fans can support their favorite daytime dramas or actors by submitting video messages for the 34th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards. Producers will choose several videos to air during the live awards show June 15 from 9-11p on CBS Television Network. Personal videos can be mailed now through May 20. Email the producers at [email protected] if you would like to participate and visit www.mydaytimeawards.com for official rules and regulations.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
FOX has another talent reality show in the works from the same producers that are behind American Idol. The Search for the Next Great American Band (wt) will seek musical groups of all genres, all ages and styles to compete for the title and a recording contract. The format will be much the same, as judges will narrow the playing field during auditions to 10 bands who will then perform before a live studio audience. Viewers will get to vote on their favorite each week as the bands present varying styles of music. The final three bands will battle in a showdown. Interested bands can find out information on where to send videos/DVDs at www.Americanidol.com . This new series is produced by 19 Entertainment and FremantleMedia North America.
