Cynopsis: DIGITAL
5/11/07
Good Morning, it’s Friday, May 11, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
News Corp.’s Fox Sports and MySpace announced a sponsorship deal with the NFL that will give advertisers a broad web presence during the Super Bowl, a little added value for $2.7 million they’ll have to spend next year for a thirty-second spot. Advertisers will be able to offer “calls to action” after their spots run online, according to The Wall Street Journal, with coupons and links to their own sites. Such bundling of digital assets with traditional programming will define this year’s upfront, say ad sales executives.
NBC.com is launching an online spinoff of Heroes to give fans something to watch during the off season. The eight-webisode Inside Heroes will look behind the scenes at the production process and recap individual characters’ storylines as they unfolded throughout the season. The profiles begin with Peter Peterelli’s story on May 21.
USA Network and Yahoo signed a deal to utilize upcoming artists to promote USA programming. Popular acts on Yahoo Music will be offered promotional deals to help blend their work into USA marketing and programming initiatives on air, possibly leading to the development of original multiplatform content.
CBS-owned Simon & Shuster is launching a video channel BookChannel.tv next month to promote authors and new book releases.
New York City cabs may become the latest distribution outlet for digital content. The NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission met to discuss deploying multimedia touch-screen displays for its entire taxi fleet, creating a new ad-based revenue stream for the commission. Riders will be able to browse news stories and map the cab’s route. The GPS-enabled system can even swap out ads to make sure they are appropriate for the location the taxi is in at the time.
Online video startup Joost received a $45 million round of funding from a group of minority investors including Sequio Capital, Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing and CBS. The IPTV-based distribution platform, founded by Kazaa and Skype founders Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom, plans to deepen advertising and promotional relationships with Viacom in the U.S. and expand distribution with Li’s group of companies in China and other parts of Asia.
FanLib.com launched as hub for “fan fiction” writers. The idea is to provide a home for creators of one of the first “user generated” genres, fan stories written using popular movie and TV characters and storylines. Members can upload stories, embed promos and build communities around their favorite shows. FanLib, founded by Titanic producer Jon Landau, Jon Moonves and former Yahoo CMO Anil Singh, is also currently sponsoring the Ghost Whisperer Fan Finale Challenge on the site asking fans to write their own conclusion to the show’s two-part finale.
Spike Lee created a short film Jesus Children of America for Babelgum, a start up launched by the founder of Italy’s second largest telecom Silvio Scaglia. Like Joost and BitTorrent, the Dublin, Ireland-based subsidiary of Babel Networks employs a peer-to-peer file sharing model that streams video from multiple computers to a software client that resides on users’ desktops. Scaglia is in the process of selling his telecom company Fastweb to focus more attention on Babelgum, which plans to launch to the public next month.
Video aggregator ROO Group raised an additional $25 million in common stock transaction with institutional investors. ROO operates the ROO Video Exchange, aggregating video content and distributing it across multiple sites, with targeted ads attached. ROO also powers video on publisher sites in Europe, Asia and the U.S., including The Sun, The Street and MTVu’s NYU and UMass sites. News Corp. took a 10% equity stake in the company earlier this year.
Teen focused social networking site Tagged reached profitability on $600,000 in monthly revenues, according to tech blog TechCrunch, lately adding 350,000 new users per day. Tagged emphasizes security protection for its under 18 user base, prohibiting the public or registered users over 16 from viewing the profiles of younger users.
Multiplatform VOD/online Kids service Kabillion is celebrating Mothers Day with Mom-themed programming and e-greeting cards. Comcast will be promoting the programming on its On Demand barker channel this weekend in about 13.3 million digital cable homes.
Motorola is ready to roll out a new mobile phone with a full-motion video display capable of reading long-form content off of a removable storage card. The company sees the cards as a potential new form of mass distribution for digital movies, TV shows and music. The video interface, which can handle up to 30 frames-per-second, will be sold initially in Europe where 3G wireless networks are much more prevalent.
Fox Interactive Media revenues grew 65% year-on-year during the first quarter, exceeding $135 million. Display ad revenue grew at crisp pace, as did revenue from the Google Earth ad alliance, which produced $50 million over the past 6 months. FIM is on pace to match or exceed its previously stated goal of $500 million for the fiscal year, according to News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch, with a network of approximately 100 million unique users connecting through Fox properties each month.
Structural changes put in place to transform the company into a digital media distributor dragged Viacom‘s profit down 36% during the first quarter, down to $202.9 million on revenues of $2.75 billion. Recent key partnerships with Joost, Yahoo and Sprint are designed to “broaden revenue opportunities on wireless and online platforms,” according to President and CEO Philippe Dauman. He said digital marketing teams now enjoy a prominent seat at the table at all sales meetings. Viacom is also projecting $500 million in digital revenues this year, currently averaging 39 million monthly unique users, according to comScore.
Yahoo Chairman/CEO Terry Semel knocked broadcast and cable network’s effort to provide advertisers with multiplatform marketing plays during the upfront this year, claiming networks could not match the depth and scale of quality content found on portals such as Yahoo and MSN. “In most cases cross platform deals don’t create new revenue,” he said at Microsoft’s Strategic Account Summit in Seattle.
Automotive advertising, long the life-blood of local TV stations, is defecting rapidly to the internet, according to findings by Borrell Associates. Car Buyers spend an average of five hours online researching cars before buying, a trend interactive cable advertising application providers have also noticed. Competition to attract local car buyers is increasing, according to Borrell, and sites that can attract attention with video and interactive features stand a better chance at generating leads.
The Interactive Advertising Bureau issued a set of guidelines about measuring digital media and rich media applications on the internet. They call for online activity to be tied directly to ad serving and for contingencies to be followed to account for video streaming, financial tickers, etc. The IAB is calling on agencies, publishers and tech vendors to review the guidelines and offer up ideas and criticisms to further the debate on what standards need to be established.
Advertisers are not harnessing the internet to its full advantage, according to a new study from Group M. The WPP company, (which also oversees Mediaedge: cia, Mindshare, MediaCom and MAXUS), outlines four “compass points” of concentration marketers should focus on: reach, engagement, reputation and transaction.
Forty-six million worldwide mobile phone users will own video-capable handsets by 2010, predicts telecom research firm Infonetics. Network carrier revenue from video services grew 317% last year to almost $200 million. Mobile video users are currently concentrated in Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong, comprising of 57% of the total subscriber base. Europe, the Middle East and Africa had 31% of users, while North America had only 10%.
Stephanie Hart was named West Coast Regional Director of Petry Media Corp.’s Digerati iSales unit. She will sell internet advertising for the interactive sales division from Los Angeles, reporting to Julie Holmberg, EVP/Petry Media. Stephanie joins the company from Interactive Group, where she was Director of Sales/Digital Media.
Warner Music Group hired former JetBlue.com Marketing Director Peter Scherr as VP/Interactive Marketing. Peter will lead a team that will work to expand the company’s mobile, e-commerce and search engine marketing efforts. He reports to Dan Pelson, SVP/Global Consumer Marketing.
ManiaTV.com is trying to replicate the TV model on the internet. Rather than just offer hundreds of video on demand options to choose from, ManiaTV features a “LiveTV” music video channel you can leave running as background and schedules live shows and performances to try and create event programming for the web. The site is sponsoring a simulcast on Second Life with 3 bands tomorrow and launching a new show hosted by Dave Navarro you can get a flavor of here. Comedian Tom Green is also a favorite son of the site.

Corrections : Bob McPhee, the new EVP/Ad Sales for Kabillion, reports to Bill Schultz, CEO. Also Elvis Costello will perform songs from his latest two albums on Monday’s CBS.com’s webcast.
