Cynopsis: Kids!

03/04/11

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 4, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

A Canadian investor group has purchased a majority stake in Starz Animation Toronto, the CG animation and VFX studio that animated the movies Gnomeo & Juliet and 9, from US-based Starz.  The terms of the deal were not revealed.  Starz, President and CEO Chris Albrecht, explained that while Starz remains a minority partner in Starz Animation Toronto, Starz is now primarily focused on live-action TV content for the worldwide market.  Media and marketing executive J. Thomas Murray and executive producer Steven B. Hecht lead the Canadian investors in purchasing the group, which plans to support the studio’s current production and business development, while also using it to build a multimedia business.  The government of the Province of Ontario’s 2009 grant of Canadian$23 million (a total investment of Canadian $153 million over five years), to support Starz Animation Toronto in creating and retaining 250 jobs and expanding the studio, will remain in tact.  The studio will maintain its debt financing deal with the RBC Royal Bank.  Starz Animation Toronto, which recently opened a visual effects and creature animation unit, is currently working on VFX for Starz Entertainment’s project, Camelot, as well as continuing to work on animation and VFX for Robosapien: Rebooted the family-targeted, live-action feature film from Avi Arad Productions, and Dolphin Tale from Alcon Films and Warner Bros.  The studio also worked on the upcoming Hoodwinked Too!: Hood Vs. Evil, for Kanbar Entertainment the Weinstein Co., and the recent TV holiday special, Yes, Virginia, for Macy’s, the Ebeling Group and JWT.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

DreamWorks Animation unveils plans to bring Rumblewick to the big screen, with director Tim Johnson (Over The Hedge, Antz) and writer Jim Herzfeld (Meet the Fockers, Meet the Parents) collaborating on the project.  The movie is based on the kid’s book My Unwilling Witch (The Rumblewick Letters) by Hiawyn Oram and Sarah Warburton, which revolves around the adventures of a magician’s rabbit that is invited to learn real magic only to learn he is a pawn in a battle between rival witches.  He must outsmart the witches to survive.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Lucasfilm and Fox reveal the official release date for the 3D theatrical debut of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace as February 10, 2012.  The announcement seems be making Star Wars fans happy with the added news that Industrial Light & Magic will supervise “the meticulous conversion,” which  “is being done with utmost respect for the source material, and with a keen eye for both technological considerations and artistic intentions.”

In Canada, Astral announced that Playhouse Disney will make the shift to Disney Junior on May 6, 2011.  Similarly the French-language version of the network, Playhouse Disney Tele, will also make the move to Disney Junior on the same day.  Like in the US, Disney Junior will feature the new animated series Jake and the Never Land Pirates.  Disney Junior in Canada will also feature the short form series A Poem Is …, which is narrated by Jennifer Garner and Katie Holms and other celebrity voices, Special Agent Oso: Three Healthy Steps, and original Canadian series Franny’s Feet, The Secret World of Benjamin Bear, and Stella and Sam.  Disney Junior is also available through Disney Junior OnDemand and Disney Junior OnLine.

A collection of Nickelodeon‘s tween/teen-targeted programming will be seen in the Ukraine under a new exclusive content deal between Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) and terrestrial family-centric broadcaster, NEW Channel.  The deal will see 200+ episodes of Nickelodeon’s tween/teen live-action programming, including iCarly, True Jackson, The Troop and Drake & Josh, localized and broadcast for the Ukraine for the first time.

Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing is set to publish a new young adult trilogy from authors Jenny Han (Summer trilogy) and Siobhan Vivian (Not That Kind of Girl, Sam Difference).  The first title in the trilogy, Burn For Burn , will be published in hardcover in fall 2012 under the Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers imprint.  The second and third and final books, Fire With Fire and Ashes To Ashes will publish in fall 2013 and fall 2014 respectively.  The trilogy revolves around three very different girls who find common ground and team to seek revenge on those who have wronged them.  Along the way the girls discover a supernatural secret that explains how and why they were brought together.  The publisher’s executive editor Zareen Jaffery will serve as the series editor.  Justin Chanda, VP/Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, negotiated the deal with Folio Literary Management’s Emily van Beek for the North American rights to the series. Razorbill/Puffin UK acquired rights for the book series for the UK, Australia and New Zealand.  Brazilian rights were acquired by Novo Conceito.
