The March Madness NCAA Basketball tournament is not only bigger this year (68 teams instead of 64,) it’s also coming to the iPhone and iPad – for free. CBS Sports and Time Warner’s Tuner, who share the broadcast rights, are teaming up to launch a free iOS app on March 10, capable of streaming complete games over WiFi and 3G networks. (CBS has offered iPhone streaming of games in the past for a fee, but this is the first time it is free and the first time the games are available on the larger-screen iPad.) The ad supported NCAA March Madness on Demand online offering will also be available again on NCAA.com, CBSSports.com and SI.com.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
ESPN is placing a huge digital emphasis on its coverage of Championship Week, the run up of games that determine which teams will make it into the NCAA Tournament. This year 187 conference tournament games will be streamed on ESPN3.com and another 38 games on ESPN Mobile TV over the next 11 days. The new Bracket Bound iOS app will break down the latest news, scores and bracketology science, along with providing access to ESPN’s popular Tournament Challenge game (5.4 million entries last year.)
 
The online voting option for Fox’s American Idol, installed in time for fans to help whittle down the final 24 contestants, is already suffering a backlash on the American Idol site. There are 17 pages of complaints on the show’s official message board under the topic of “ Online Voting S*cks.” Many are miffed for having to enter their Facebook details in order to vote.
 
DirecTV
may be the first distributor to launch a $30/movie premium on-demand offering according to an LA Times report, much to the chagrin of movie theater owners.
 
Major League Baseball Advanced Media
and Endemol received over 5,000 online applicants vying to star in its new Dream Job web series, per THR. The winner gets set up in an apartment in New York for the entire Baseball season to blog, post and act out his or her passion for the game.

 
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Kurani Interactive
, developer of the real-time mobile feedback app Opinionaided, has secured $1 million in additional seed funding from venture capitalists General Catalyst, SoftBank Capital and Draper Fisher Jurvetson to expand the Opinionaided brand.
 
Network PR veteran Cindy Ronzoni has launched her own publicity shop dubbed Social Spread Media, emphasizing the use of social media and multiplatform campaigns to promote entertainment, small business and non-profit brands. Cindy’s initial clients include TCA and Devious Media.
 
Sacramento-based enterprise grade cloud networking service Glu Networks landed $4.5 million in series A financing led from a group of investors that included Keiretsu Forum, San Joaquin Angels and Sierra Angels. Glue’s “Virtual Office” product extends corporate networks to remote locations staffed by lower cost teleworkers.

Publicis Groupe
has acquired UK-based, interactive agency Kitcatt Nohr, founded in 2002 with client roster including Toyota, Samsung, Lexus and Delta Airlines. The agency will be merged with Digitas in the UK to create Kitcatt Nohr Digitas, which will be part of Publicis’ VivaKi group.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
New York area MSO Cablevision is working on bringing its entire programming line-up to the iPad as soon as rights issues can be cleared, reports MediaPost. The company is also working on launching a TV-based web browser equipped to stream lP video.
 
One of Facebook‘s founders is planning to sell 10 million shares of the company on the secondary market in a move that could fetch $300 million, per the NYPost.
 
UK-based Motive Television, developer of the Motive TV Anytime Anywhere technology platform, has established a presence in the U.S. with an incorporated subsidiary in Delaware.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Don’t expect the digital deal-of-the-day offers to abate anytime soon. The category, popularized by start-ups such as Groupon and LivingSocial, is predicted to generate nearly $4 billion in revenue by 2015, according to researcher BIA/Kelsey.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Convinced that women are at the center of the mobile media revolution, NBCU’s iVillage unveiled plans to roll out an entire network of smartphone and tablet apps geared around entertainment, lifestyle and social networking. Following the launch of the Red Carpet Fever app, the site will launch a signature iVillage app, followed by “My Pregnancy” and “Newborn Milestones” apps as well as applications around the Health and Fitness category. The plan is to launch 2 new apps per quarter for both the iPhone and Android platforms.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Nicholas Lehman, former COO of IAC Programming and a longtime veteran of Viacom’s MTV Web operations, has been tapped by Comcast’s NBCUniversal to oversee its pure-play digital businesses including iVillage, Daily Candy, Swirl and Fandango. His newly created position is President of Digital for NBCU’s Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media division (E&DN/IM). Nick will report directly to Lauren Zalaznick, Chairman of the new division.
 
Oakland, CA-based internet radio firm Pandora made a number of additions to its advertising team:

  • Heidi Browning, former Global Digital Officer at Universal McCann, joins as SVP/Sales and Planning
  • Dan Weiner joins as VP/Sales, based in Los Angeles
  • Rhonda Bitterman was named Director/Southeast Advertising Sales
  • Alan Simkowski has been named Director of Sales, based in Pandora’s Chicago office
  • Glenn Chin comes aboard as National Director, Strategic Partnerships

 

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
By now you’ve heard that Charlie Sheen broke the record for reaching 1 million followers in the shortest amount of time on Twitter – it took him all of 25 hours, 17 minutes. Sheen enlisted the help of start-up Ad.ly to learn how to utilize the tools of the trade – hashtags, bit.ly and twit pic – to help build an audience quickly and keep them coming back for more, according to Forbes. Ad.ly acts as a middleman between sponsors and celebrities, bringing in cash for mentioning or appearing with branded products on their social media outlets. This is a fast-growing business and some artists have been pushing the envelope on their own to use social media to grow and monetize their fan bases. For instance, Brittney Spears maintains her own website that her 7 million Twitter followers and 8.5 million Facebook fans turn to for the latest news, merchandise, music videos, singles and CDs. (For one, the blog provides a platform for her to refute tall tabloid tales.) Her latest idea takes a page from TV shopping, holding limited-time “flash sales,” like this T-shirt offering going on at her “Pop up shop” until 11am this morning. The site may not make enough for Brittney to quit her day job, but it certainly reduces her dependency on record labels and concert promoters. Emerging artists may want to check out the new Fantrail iPhone app making its official debut at SXSW. It allows artists to send personalized messages or make exclusive geotargeted offers to groups of fans in cities they’re touring in.
