03/30/12
Good morning. It’s Friday, March 30, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.
Smartphones account for almost half (49.7%) of all mobile phones, and are dominating new phone purchases (at more than two-thirds of all mobile phone purchases), according to the latest numbers from Nielsen. It’s an increase of 38% over last year; in February 2011, only 36% of mobile subscribers owned smartphones. In terms of the smartphone OS market, Android holds a 48% share of smartphone owner, with Apple accounting for 32.1% and BlackBerry at 11.6%. Among those who bought a smartphone in the last three months, 48% of respondents in the February 2012 report said they chose an Android, while 43% bought an iPhone.
The Digital Content NewFronts (DCNF) continue to expand in scope, with the two-week “digital upfronts” now featuring 15 events, nearly tripling the number of participants since it was announced in late February. Held in New York City from April 19 to May 2, 2012, new presenters, including Alloy Digital, Disney Interactive Media and Federated Media Publishing, have joined the six founding partners: AOL, Digitas, Google/YouTube, Hulu, Microsoft Advertising and Yahoo! Aside from the content partners, AdWeek will also be hosting a conference dubbd NexTech and IAB has plans to host functions that feature leading sight, sound and motion publishers.
AOL and independent media company BermanBraun have launched Mandatory.com, a new online destination for men that also marks AOL’s entry into the male consumer lifestyle space. Led by former Editorial Director of Maxim.com, and founding Editor of Break Media’s HolyTaco.com, Cory Jones, the site will distill its content into four categories: Play, Know, Women and Awesome. Gillette is the site’s launch sponsor.
My Damn Channel has announced a new, multiyear deal with Grace Helbig, creator and star of Daily Grace, through which she will create additional episodes of the long-running series on My Damn Channel. Also, starting yesterday, Helbig will be the Thursday host of the recently announced My Damn Channel LIVE daily comedy series, which streams live every weekday at 4pm ET on YouTube and MyDamnChannel.com.
Online sports network Bleacher Report has unveiled a more personalized homepage that incorporates its “Team Stream” tool that gives visitors quicker access to content and information related to the team(s) they follow. The web tool is similar to the Team Streap app for iOS and Android devices, and will deliver content in real-time. The homepage will also feature a new social module that pulls up the trending sports topics on social media channels. The site said visits to its homepage have been up 144% from February 2011.
In a blog post about Google’s plans to launch a pay-TV service in the Kansas City market, Mike Paxton, Research Director/Digital Entertainment Group at NPD In-Stat, says the biggest challenge facing Google is actually functioning as a service provider. Paxton says that being a service provider is second nature to companies like Time Warner Cable and AT&T, but is not exactly a strength of Google’s. Time Warner Cable has nearly 900 employees in the Kansas City area, working on all sorts of jobs ranging from customer service reps to installation technicians. Google would have to do something similar to be a legitimate competitor. Paxton also says that this service will take at least a year to be rolled out, as Google will need to secure content rights that would be competitive with a standard cable or satellite service. It’s something that could prove to be difficult considering the company’s ongoing lawsuit with Viacom.
InsightsOne, a start-up that provides cloud-based predictive analytics solutions enabled by big data, has closed a $4.3 million Series A round of financing, led by Norwest Venture Partners (NVP). As part of its investment, Promod Haque, Managing Partner at NVP, will join InsightOne’s Board of Directors. The start-up says it will use this new capital to grow its executive team and further invest in sales, marketing and product development in order to meet the demands of its growing early adopter customer base. InsightsOne was founded by the team that build Yahoo!’s consumer data and analytics platform, which was the first platform to exploit big data to increase consumer monetization and engagement.
TubeMogul has signed a deal with Nielsen to provide actionable gross ratings point (GRP) data from Nielsen Online Campaign Ratings. It will allow TubeMogul to offer brand marketers and trading desks increased accuracy and accountability in reaching consumers within desired age and gender groups. Nielsen Online Campaign Ratings provide MRC-accredited GRP for online advertising campaigns of any size with metrics similar to those used for TV advertising, thus enabling cross-media planning and analysis. Per this agreement, Nielsen’s online reach and frequency measurement will be available to video advertisers in campaign reporting, letting them compare GRPs for different age and genders side-by-side with impressions, clicks and survey data measuring impact.
“The term ‘data broker’ has no widely accepted definition, and the definition proposed in the [FTC’s] framework is extremely broad,” said Mike Zaneis, General Counsel for the Interactive Advertising Bureau, in a prepared statement submitted to Congress in advance of a hearing the IAB had with the House yesterday, according to MediaPost. Zaneis said that the FTC’s definition could mean virtually every publisher site, advertiser, ad network or analytics firm. To that end, he advocated a more narrow definition of the term in order “to avoid unintended and counterproductive outcomes.” Overall, the IAB is opposing potential legislation regarding online consumer privacy, arguing that laws can be inflexible and become outdated especially within the area of “evolving technologies.”
Call for Digital Content/Insights: Cynopsis Media will be producing an E-Special Report: Digital Content NewFronts for delivery on Monday, April 16, three days before the first-ever Digital Content NewFronts (DCNF) kick off in New York City. The E-Special Report will take an in-depth look at the key players and new programming being served up at the DCNF. We’ll examine the issues and challenges facing buyers and sellers, as well as highlight the important digital hits going into the event and those that are still yet to come. thePlatform has unveiled the newest component of its TV Everywhere solution set, designed explicitly for independent mid-market TV operators. In collaboration with Empathy Labs, thePlatform built a turnkey solution for building and launching authenticated TV Everywhere web portals. SintecMedia is debuting its new contracts and rights module, OnRights, which is a part of its OnAir broadcast management suite, at NAB 2012 (booth N5315). OnAir is a scalable, all-in-one broadcast management solution for national networks, cable networks, station groups and satellite companies. OnRights manages multidimensional licensing conditions, including various types of rights, platforms (e.g., VOD, mobile, digital, linear), territories, formats, currencies and languages. Users can view contract terms from a single screen, manage inbound and outbound rights, follow comprehensive rule enforcement for a broadcaster’s stock, determine real-time access to rights availabilities and track material fulfillment. OnRights is also available as a standalone solution for media distribution companies.
Sprint and portable video-over-cellular solutions provider LiveU have inked an agreement to include LiveU’s HD live-video transmission solutions as part of Sprint’s Machine to Machine (M2M) solutions portfolio. With this new technology, the companies say that Sprint will be able to bring to market a mobile video transmission solution that delivers HD video quality and combines multiple 3G and 4G air cards for one resilient uplink.
