Amazon Studios has optioned another comedy pilot, bringing its slate of original series being produced for Prime Instant Video to 14. This one, Betas, is a half-hour comedy set in Silicon Valley and follows four computer geeks as they attempt to “crack the ultimate code.” Written by Evan Endicott and Josh Stoddard and directed by Michael Lehmann (Heathers, American Horror Story), the pilot is produced by Lehmann alongside Emmy-winners Alan Freedland and Alan Cohen (King of the Hill, American Dad), and Oscar-nominated producer Michael London (Sideways, The Informant). Betas, in addition to Alpha House, Browsers, Dark Minions, Onion News Empire, Supanatural, Those Who Can’t, and Zombieland, joins six children’s pilots currently in production for Amazon Prime.
— In other words: This is quite the tug-of-war between Netflix and Amazon. Both companies are enlisting successful TV producers and filmmakers to create original programs for their streaming subscribers. The difference is that Netflix is automatically giving full-season orders, while Amazon is counting on user-generated reviews to help determine which of the 14 shows it’ll pick up for full seasons. It’ll be interesting to see how much of a marketing push Amazon will give to any of the shows that receive a full season.
Speaking of Netflix: Fox Digital Studio’s original comedy series, Bad Samaritans, will premiere on the streaming service on March 31. Produced by Walt Becker (Van Wilder, Wild Hogs) in partnership with Fox Digital exclusively for the web, the show follows a young couple who accidentally starts a forest fire and is sentenced to 2,000 hours of community service. It stars Julianna Guill (Friday the 13th), Brian Kubach (Piranha), and David Faustino (Married with Children), with guest appearances from Andy Dick and Brian Huskey, among others. The first season consists of five episodes.
Yahoo will premiere the third season of Burning Love on Friday, April 12. The Bachelor parody will get a different release strategy this time around as well. Yahoo says it plans to air a new episode every weekday for two consecutive weeks in an effort to satiate fans who binge-watch. The third season pokes fun at shows like the Bachelor Pad, as contestants from the first two seasons return to try to win $900. A repackaged version of the show was recently picked up by E!, and has been airing on the channel on Monday nights.
PlayOn, a video server that lets users stream content from sites such as Netflix and Hulu to their smartphone, tablet, or connected TV, has added Redbox Instant by Verizon to its “channel” lineup. Users most subscribe to Redbox Instant ($8/month) in order to access content via PlayOn’s Redbox Instant Channel. Available for a one-time price of $49.99, or an annual subscription for $24.99, PlayOn makes online video content available on gaming consoles and streaming devices like the PlayStation 3, Wii, Wii U, Roku, and Google TV, among other DLNA-compliant devices.
Youku Tudou, one of China’s biggest online video sites, is adding 33 US TV shows, from the likes of ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, and The CW, to its international library this year. Shows include Vampire Diaries, Revenge, Modern Family and Cougar Town. Since 2010, Youku Tudou has brought in more than 20 US TV shows to the site. This is because US programming is the fastest-growing category in China, according to Youku, which says viewership for US-based shows increased roughly 400% from 2011 to 2012.

Facebook has introduced several updates for developers and marketers looking to run mobile app install ad campaigns in the news feed. The enhancements include the ability to target by specific versions of the Android and iOS operating systems, as well as by devices with only Wi-Fi connections. This way, Facebook says, developers and marketers can reach users with the version of their app that works best on their device. The other update is a new ad create tool, to help developers and marketers design and deliver a mobile app install ad “in minutes.”
Deluxe Digital Distribution is powering multiscreen video delivery for Starz’s Play suite of TV Everywhere services and apps. Per the deal, Deluxe, through its Deluxe OnDemand video catalog, is handling video processing, protection, and encoding systems for Starz Play, Encore Play, and Movieplex Play, all of which combine to offer Starz subscribers authenticated access to the programmer’s entire video library. Deluxe also provides the software to ensure integration with Starz’s distribution partners.
Perform Group, a UK-based distributor of digital sports highlights and video content to publishers, is launching a new joint venture with American City Business Journals (ACBJ), around the sports publishing brand Sporting News. As part of the deal, Perform is acquiring a 65% stake in Sporting News from Advance Publications, a division of ACBJ and owner/operator of the publisher. Perform also has the ability to buy out the other 35% if it chooses to do so. The new venture, titled Perform Sporting News Limited, will be based in NY, with sales and editorial teams in Charlotte, Chicago, and LA, and will enhance Perform’s content and ad businesses in the US and Canadian markets.
Google has updated its PrimeTime app for Google TV. The app offers a guide and recommendations for linear programming on their cable/satellite subscription, as well as videos across an array of online sites and services. Content recommendations are personalized based on users’ viewing habits, app usage, and ratings. Per Engadget, the update now includes a “Subscription Selector,” which allows users to access shows and movies from Netflix, HBO Go, and Amazon Prime for free, as long as they’re already subscribing to those video services.
Magic Ruby is currently at work on a second-screen app for Technicolor’s new CGI-animated adventure series for kids, The Deep, which will premiere in fall 2014. The companion app will sync to the show, and will offer an array of exclusive content, educational facts, games, and “commerce wish-lists.” The app will also provide content to keep fans entertained between broadcasts.
Steven R. Swartz will succeed outgoing Hearst CEO Frank A. Bennack, Jr., beginning June 1. Currently, Swartz serves as the company’s President and COO. Bennack will keep his position as Executive Vice Chair of the Hearst Board of Directors and Chairman of the company’s Executive Committee.
Mobile ad tech company Crisp Media has named Matthew Sweeney as its new SVP, Managing Director. He will work directly with Crisp’s publishing partners as well as agencies, marketing clients, and internal teams to develop and execute sales strategies around the company’s mobile ad solutions.

Game of Thrones is back this Sunday night (9pm ET, if you didn’t already know). To promote the third season of the fantasy series, digital marketing agency Definition 6 and HBO have launched Join the Realm. The site lets viewers create their own “House Sigil,” or coat of arms, in a fashion similar to the Lannisters, Starks, Baratheons, and Targaryens. Users can even include your own motto (because what’s a house without a motto?), and of course share a banner across their social networks. The site also lets users download different versions, optimized to serve as Facebook cover photos, profile pictures, Twitter backgrounds, Instagram photos, and more. On the tech end, Definition 6 says HBO wanted the site to be usable across smartphone and tablet platforms as well as desktop browsers. In order to do so, the agency used HTML5 and Canvas to build the interactive photo editor.
