Cynopsis: Kids!

03/19/10

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 19, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

“To Make a Long Story Short” … More Captain Underpants books!  Scholastic inks a new four-book deal with Dav Pilkey, author of the super popular Captain Underpants book series.  The Blue Sky Press, a Scholastic imprint, will release the first new graphic novel, The Adventures of Ook and Gluk, Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future, on August 10, 2010. The first English-language printing will be for one million copies.  And yes, like in previous Captain Underpants books, The Adventures of Ook and Gluk, Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future will feature the “Flip-O-Rama,” (flipbook animation) in every chapter.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) laid out a new set of limitations on how it plans to restrict how tobacco companies can market and advertise to kids/youth.  With its new authority, set forth in a law passed in summer 2009 that gives the FDA authority over the industry, The FDA’s rules are set to take effect on June 22, 2010.  Stating that youth tobacco use in the US has been “significantly reduced,” the FDA also noted that “20% of high school students still smoke, and the tobacco industry continues to spend $12.8 billion a year … to market its deadly and addictive products, often in ways that appeal to children.”  The new rules include: banning remaining tobacco-branded sponsorships of sports and entertainment events; ban sales of cigarettes in the smaller packs of fewer than 20 – known by some as “kiddie packs” that are more affordable to young people; address outdoor tobacco advertising near schools and playgrounds; restrict tobacco ads to black-and-white text only in publications with significant teen readership, at point-of-sale and outdoors (except in adult-only facilities).  Of course court challenges and defenses on these rules and their provisions continue by the FDA and the tobacco industry.  Earlier this week, a new study published in the journal Pediatrics found that R.J. Reynolds’ marketing campaign for Camel No. 9 cigarettes, launched in 2007 and features promotional giveaways including flavored lip balm, purses and cell phone accessories, has resonated with teen girls and increased their awareness of the brand, which is considered a factor in increasing the likelihood that teens will smoke.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Director Tim Burton is working on a 3D stop-motion animated feature film version of Charles Addams’ The Addams Family, per Deadline.  Illumination Entertainment, Chris Meledandri’s family-centric Universal-based banner, has acquired the rights to Addams drawings.  Burton will direct the movie.  According to the report the new Addams Family movie will be different from The Addams Family TV series, the previous live-action feature films, or the current Broadway show.

Actor Hank Azaria play the evil Gargamel in the new Columbia/Sony Pictures Animation‘s mixed CGI animated/live-action The Smurfs movie, per Entertainment Weekly.   Initially it was reported that Azaria’s character, the Smurfs’ nemesis, would be animated but now Coming Soon reports that Neil Patrick Harris, who is also starring as a live-action character in the movie, confirmed via Twitter that Gargamel will be a live action one.  Azaria is well known for his voice over work, including numerous voices on The Simpsons.  Additionally, Jayma Mays (Glee) will star as the pregnant wife, also a live-action character, of Harris’ character, according to THR.  The Smurfs movie, which also stars Jonathan Winters, George Lopez, Katy Perry and Alan Cumming, is slated for an August 3, 2011 release.

Friday Fun Fact:   The Eiffel Tower is painted approximately once every 7 years and requires nearly 50 tons of paint each time

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia:  This super hero’s special costume was referred to simply as The Suit.  Who is he?  RALPH’S SUIT on THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO  Kudos to: Glenn Hauman-ComicMix/Norwalk; David Stern-BARD Ent/NY; Keith Manzella-EastWest MG/NY; Paul Caldera-Beacon Media/Mahwah; Rosemary Cunningham-Cox Reps MMT/Chicago

Today’s Trivia Question:  The original storyline for this character included him being stomped to death and then returning as a ghost “conscience” for the title character.  That was reworked when the story was made into what is now a classic film, but he remains as the conscience of the story.  He’s also quite dapper with a top had, ascot and tails.  Who is he?  (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
