Cynopsis: DIGITAL
03.15.13
Good morning. It’s Friday, March 15, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
CBS just announced a new iOS app that allows users to stream full episodes of the network’s primetime lineup eight days after broadcast, as well as daytime and late night programming the day after broadcast. CBS says it will release Android and Windows 8 versions of the streaming app later this year. The app will also integrate with the existing CBS Connect app by the start of the fall 2013 TV season, so viewers can access a slew of second-screen features, including social feeds and bonus content tied to TV shows like CSI, Criminal Minds, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Hawaii Five-O. Buick is the official launch partner.
In other words: CBS has historically been the most resistant of the big networks to offer its TV programming online and on mobile devices. With this launch as well as the licensing deals that prioritize Prime Instant Video, Hulu Plus and Amazon, the network is now pushing hard into the digital circle.
Netflix has signed a deal with Fox Television Studios (FTVS) to make season three of The Killing available exclusively to its streaming subscribers three months after the season finale airs in the US and Canada. Under the deal, AMC and Netflix share the costs for the third season, which is currently in production. The first two seasons are already available for streaming in the US.
The Shield, starring Michael Chiklis, is coming to Crackle, beginning in April. All seven seasons of the show will be made available on a rolling basis through March 2014. From April to June 2013, viewers will be able to watch seasons one and two; from July to September 2013, seasons three and four; from October to December 2013, seasons five, six, and potentially seven; and from January 2014 to March 2014, seasons seven and one. Crackle employed a similar layered release for the Denis Leary’s Rescue Me.
Additional Layering Alert: As revealed yesterday, CBS has licensed past seasons of The Good Wife to Amazon Prime Instant Video and Hulu Plus, but also via a layered strategy that places digital distribution ahead of syndication on TV. The first three seasons of The Good Wife are now available on Prime Instant Video, with season four coming later this year. In September, previous seasons of the show will arrive on Hulu Plus. In January 2014, The Hallmark Channel will begin airing older seasons every weekday, after which weekend syndication rights will be available to local TV stations in September 2014.
Yahoo News is live-streaming the 2013 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), which is currently underway in National Harbor, MD. Taking place from March 14 to 16, the live streams will begin at 9am and air through to 5pm today and tomorrow. They will feature speeches from conservative political heavyweights like Paul Ryan, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, as well as remarks from Wayne Lapierre and Donald Trump. In addition to the live streams, Yahoo News will provide on-site coverage and analysis from political reporter Chris Moody.
Video discovery platform Magnify.net will curate content for Time Out New York’s new video channel. Per the deal, the channel will host relevant videos from Magnify.net’s collection, as well as original videos created in house by Time Out New York, all in order to provide viewers with more ways to figure out what to do and see and experience in the Big Apple.
Redbox Instant by Verizon is now available to the public. For a monthly fee, users get unlimited streaming of its movie catalog – currently at 4,600 titles. Apps for the service are available for iOS and Android devices, as well as on Xbox 360s and Samsung Smart TVs and connected Blu-ray players. Redbox Instant is offering a month-long free trial to new subscribers.

Univision.com has received accreditation from the Media Rating Council (MRC) for the ninth consecutive year. The accreditation covers display ad impressions as well as page impressions, cookies, visits, and duration stats for content delivered via Univision Interactive’s Web Metrics System.
Microsoft Advertising, in partnership with Flamingo Research and Ipsos OTX, recently conducted a “Cross-Screen Engagement” study, for which it surveyed consumers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, the UK, and the US, to determine why consumers are using multiple devices as well as the motivations that drive usage across screens. The study uncovered four “multi-screening pathways” that consumers typically follow:
- Content Grazing: 68% of consumers use two or more screens at the same time to access unrelated content (ex: watching a TV show and checking an email or texting a friend).
- Investigative Spider-Webbing: 57% of consumers “embark on a content driven investigation across devices at the same time.” This could be to seek out more info or for pure exploration (ex: watching a movie on TV and using a tablet or computer to look up what other movies the actors have been in).
- Quantum Journey: 46% of consumers use multiple screens to accomplish a task, such as shopping (ex: using a smartphone to take a picture of an item that’s on sale, then looking up reviews on a computer before purchasing).
- Social Spider-Webbing: 39% of consumers simply enjoy sharing content and connecting with others across devices.
Tablet apps will generate $8.8 billion in revenue in 2013, according to a new forecast from ABI Research. If it stands, that will be more than half of the $16.4 billion smartphone apps are expected to generate this year. Of that combined $25 billion expected from smartphone and tablet apps, iOS apps will account for 65% and Android apps will represent 27%. Looking ahead, ABI projects tablet app revenues to continue to grow, to the extent that in 2018, they will surpass smartphone app revenues as the combined market reaches $92 billion in revenue.
Hulu’s SVP/Content Andy Forssell will becoming acting CEO when current chief Jason Kilar leaves the company at the end of the month. In an internal memo that was later posted on the Hulu blog, Kilar said, “Disney and News Corporation are currently finalizing their forward-looking plans with Hulu, and the senior team has been working closely with them in that process. Once the plans are finalized, a permanent decision will be made regarding the CEO position.”
Big data solutions provider eXelate has appointed Khurrum Malik to the newly created position of Chief Marketing Officer. He will be responsible for global corporate and product marketing for eXelate’s data solutions, and will report to the company’s CEO, Mark S. Zagorski. Most recently, Malik was the VP/Marketing at comScore.
London-based multiplatform video services company, Saffron Digital, has hired Craig Chuter as its new Sales Director/EMEA.
Real Media Group, a unit of WPP’s digital marketing technology company 24/7 Media, has named Sophie Hill as its new Head of European Technology Sales. She will work with publishers to sell Real Media’s digital management and monetization solutions, including 24/7 Open Ad Stream, the Fivia order management platform, and the Microsoft Ad Exchange. In addition to Hill, Real Media Group has hired Sonia Bachu and Michael Smith as UK Sales Managers within the UK Media team.
Resonate has named Marc Johnson its new Chief Marketing Officer. He will focus on growing brand awareness and understanding in the marketplace of Resonate’s values-based audience targeting technology. In addition, the company has appointed Michael Horn as its new VP/Research. He will oversee the Survey, Data Science, and Business Intelligence teams.
Susan Danaher is stepping down from her current position as President and CEO of the Digital Place-based Advertising Association (DPAA) when her contract expires on March 31. She will stay on at the organization as an advisor to the Board of Directors. The search for her replacement is ongoing.

Social TV works best when it’s associated with live-event programming — I’ve made this argument before. That’s why I’m consistently fascinated by USA Network and how they “event-ize” their shows. We saw this with last month’s Psych Slumber Party, and we’re about to see it again later this month when the network will allow fans to determine the ending of Psych’s 100th episode via a “live digital special event.” During the episode (March 27 at 10pm ET), fans will be able to vote on one of the five suspects on Psych’s page on USANetwork.com or via Twitter using custom hashtags created for each suspect. On-air graphics will keep viewers on both coasts updated on the polling results; meaning there might be different endings depending on which coast you live on (some of the alternate endings will be made available online the next day). Second screen content will also be available through USASync. Dunkin Donuts has signed on as the Social TV Sponsor for the episode and the campaign. Very cool.
