Cynopsis: Kids!
03/12/10

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 12, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Nickelodeon hosted its star-studded ad sales upfront presentation of its 2010-11 programming schedule yesterday morning in NYC.  Cyma Zarghami, President/Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group, said the 1Q 2010 is on track to be the network’s most-watched quarter for the 30-year-old network, with January being its most-watched month ever, and laid out programming plans for 2010-11.  The big and loud morning featured appearances by director/writer/producer M. Night Shyamalan (his Paramount/Nick Movies’ The Last Airbender opens July 2), Miranda Cosgrove (iCarly), Victoria Justice (upcoming Victorious) and Jamie Kennedy (voice on the animated series Fanboy and Chum Chum), as well as performances by the stars of the network’s Big Time Rush and singer Justin Bieber.  For its upcoming season Nickelodeon will launch six new series, most already announced, five new series will debut across its digital networks, TeenNick, Nick Jr. and Nicktoons, most of which were previously announced, and new seasons of 16 returning series.

New series joining Nickelodeon’s line-up include:

  • House of Anubis (working title) – set to debut fall 2010, the long-form live-action mystery series is a Nick partnership with Studio 100 (Belgium).  Originally produced for Nickelodeon Holland, the new series follows eight kids working to solve a mystery at an English boarding school and still do well in school.  House of Anubis is produced by Lime Pictures.
  • Victorious – a live-action music series from Dan Schneider stars Victoria Justice as a kid making her way at a performing arts school.  The show launches Saturday, March 27, immediately following Nickelodeon’s Kids Choices Awards 2010.
  • Kung Fu Panda: The Series -the network’s second project with DreamWorks Animation, is based on the Kung Fu Panda movie.  The animated series is executive produced by Cheryl Holliday (King of the Hill, Still Standing, Father of the Pride) and produced at Nickelodeon’s Animation Studios.
  • Planet Sheen – a spin-off of The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius, from Steve Oedekerk, Keith Alcorn, and Jim Hope. Produced for Nick by O Entertainment, the series revolves around Sheen Guevera Estevez, the hyper kid from Jimmy Neutron, who crash lands on Zeenu where he must learn to deal with the planet’s strange customs and creatures as he tries to figure a way home.
  • T.U.F.F. Puppy – the new series from creator/exec producer Butch Hartman, and produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studios.  The show revolves around Dudley puppy – a gung-ho but dimwitted dog that is recruited by a crime fighting organization to protect the town from an evil animal organization.
  • Bubble Guppies – an interactive 3D, CGI animated preschool series set in an underwater classroom.  Created by Robert Scull and Jonny Belt, the series builds on ideas the way preschoolers think and discover.

Nickelodeon’s digital networks new series

  • Gigantic – joins the TeenNick line-up, and is the network’s second deal collaboration with Reveille.  The series takes a fictional look at teens growing up in Hollywood. Gigantic’s ensemble cast includes Grace Gummer (Meryl Streep’s daughter) and Gia Mantegna (Joe Mantegna’s daughter).
  • Voltron Panthera Force – premiering on Nicktoons, the series follows a group of five cadets brought together to form Voltron Lion Squad, called Panthera Force.  The series is a World Events Production in conjunction with Kick Start Production.
  • Dragon Ball Z Kai – joining Nicktoons in May 2010, the series is developed by Funimation Entertainment.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – also for Nicktoons, the series is jointly produced by 4Kids Entertainment and Mirage studios.
  • Dino Dan – the new original, mixed CGI animation/live-action preschool series premieres on Nick Jr. channel in fall 2010.  The science/adventure series is developed/produced by Sinking Ship Entertainment and directed by J.J. Johnson.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Kenn Viselman presents will begin production on the second The Oogieloves movie, The Oogieloves in The Big Family Adventure, next month on location in Detroit.  Negotiations are underway for Matthew Diamond (Camp Rock), who directed the first movie, The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure, to return for the second movie.

Fox will release the mixed CG animated/live-action Alvin and the Chipmunks 3D on December 16, 2011, per Variety.  Based on Ross Bagdasarian Sr.’s animated singing Alvin and the Chipmunks, this will be the third feature film in the series from Fox, New Regency and Bagdasarian Pictures.  The first Alvin and the Chipmunks movie was released in 2007, followed by Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel in 2009.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Yesterday was a double pay cable TV deal day for Disney-ABC Domestic Television with an extended deal with Starz Entertainment and a new deal bringing DreamWorks Studios‘ movies to Showtime Networks.

  • Disney inks a non-exclusive deal with Showtime, under which up to 35 of DreamWorks Studios’ films, which will release theatrically between 2010-2015, will air on the network.  This builds on Showtime’s other movie output deals with Summit Entertainment, The Weinstein Company, Miramax and CBS Films.  You’ll recall that DreamWorks Animation is a separate independent company (as of 2004) with its own pay cable TV output deal in place with HBO.
  • Disney extends its output deal with Starz by entering into a new, exclusive long-term pay TV license deal for theatrical releases from Walt Disney Studios through 2015.  Their previous agreement was set to run through 2012.  The terms of the deal were not announced.  The deal grants Starz the rights to exhibit Disney’s live-action and animated feature films on its Starz, Encore and MoviePlex linear channels, as well as its related on-demand and IP-based services in both standard and HD.  Disney movies featured under the deal include those from Marvel Entertainment, Disney Animation Studios, Disney-Pixar, Touchstone, and Hollywood Pictures.  Kid/family-targeted Disney movies to be featured exclusively on Starz this year include Up, The Princess and the Frog, G-Force, Hannah Montana: The Movie, Alice in Wonderland and Race to Witch Mountain.  Movies from DreamWorks Studios and Miramax Films are not included in the new Starz pact.

Disney Channel will air a Chuggington marathon on Sunday, March 14, 6a-10:30a during its Playhouse Disney preschool programming block.  The train-centric CGI animated Chuggington series is created and produced by Ludorum.  Chuggington airs on Playhouse Disney Tuesdays-Fridays at 10:30a and weekends at 7:30a.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the second film in Summit Entertainment’s Twilight movie franchise, will be available to Comcast customers via Comcast On Demand and in HD from Saturday, march 20 at 12:01a, the same day and date as the movie releases on DVD.  Comcast On Demand will also offer its customers an exclusive commentary from director Chris Weitz (13 minutes) about the movie as well as the cable exclusive featurette, Life After Twilight, which looks at the actors’ lives since Twilight hit, both available at the end of the movie.  There are other New Moon extras available via Comcast On Demand, such as Meet the Wolf Pack, Meet the Volturi Coven among other things.

Hallmark Hall of Fame enters into an exclusive international distribution partnership with ITV Studios Global Entertainment to represent its Hallmark Hall of Fame made-for-TV movie library.  The deal includes rights to upcoming productions and more 50+ existing Hallmark Hall of Fame movies, including family-targeted titles such as Sarah: Plain and Tall, Riding the Bus with My Sister and A Dog Named Christmas.  ITV Studios Global Entertainment will showcase the Hallmark Hall of Fame portfolio to international TV and home entertainment buyers at MIPTV 2010 next month in Cannes.

Program Call: Cynopsis Media will be producing our annual MIPTV Shopping Guide sent to all Cynopsis subscribers on Thursday, April 8, the week before MIPTV 2010 in Cannes. If your company is exhibiting and you’d like to have your programming included, please send us only the following info for your top 5 shows: title, availability date, number of episodes, length, type (i.e., movie, series, special, etc.), genre and your terms (barter, cash, etc.) as well as your company’s stand/booth location. To be included in this free and highly-viewed special edition, please send details to [email protected] no later than Thursday, April 1, 2010. A confirmation email will be sent following each submission (if you don’t get the confirmation, please resubmit).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Mobile game publisher Glu Mobile releases it How to Train Your Dragon: Flight of the Night Furry app for iPhone/iPod touch this week.  The game is, of course, based on DreamWorks Animation‘s upcoming feature film How To Train Your Dragon, which opens March 26, 2010.  Glu and DreamWorks Animation have previously teamed on mobile games based on the studio’s movies Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and Monsters vs. Aliens.

EXECUTIVE MOVES
