Good morning, it’s Friday, June 8, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
You may be of a certain age and therefore able to recall the live commercials with Ed McMahon on The Tonight Show, oh so many years ago. Okay, not so long ago – the last live ad on The Tonight Show aired in 1995. Regardless of how long ago it was, they’re on the rebound. On Tuesday, NBC will reintroduce viewers to the live commercial, again on The Tonight Show, with a live commercial for the satellite navigation system Garmin International, per WSJ. The spot will be played out immediately before the second regular commercial break, which will include a taped commercial for Garmin. The spots will not feature Leno, but rather his announcer, John Melendez (a la McMahon). With the new live spots, NBC hopes to keep viewers’ attention thru the commercial break and get their client messages thru the clutter.

HGTV will offer up a sneak preview of its newest design series Find Your Style on August 12 and August 19 at 10p, both following HGTV Design Star. The series will premiere in its regular weekly time period August 18 at 1030p. Find Your Style features host Karen McAloon whom viewers may remember from Design Remix. In this new design situation, Karen will help unsure homeowners add design elements to their homes that suit their style.
Additionally, HGTV will air two early previews of Living with Ed, the eco-friendly series surrounding the lifestyle of actor and environmentalist Ed Begley, Jr. and his wife on August 26 and September 2 at 10p. Both of these sneak previews also follow HGTV Design Star. Living with Ed will officially premiere in its normal time slot on August 27 at 1030p.
TBS’ double dose debut of Tyler Perry’s House of Payne Wednesday night at 9p and 930p brought in big viewer numbers for the network. Viewers for the 9p episode totaled: 2.72 million A18-49 and 5.2 million total viewers. The 930p episode did even better: 3.06 million A18-49 and 5.8 million total viewers. According to research from TBS and based on Nielsen Media Research data, House of Payne is now basic cable’s #1 sitcom telecast of all time in delivery of all key adult demos, total viewers and households.
SCI FI Channel also had a pair of series premieres Wednesday night: Ghost Hunters at 9p had 1.6 million total viewers and the 10p Destination Truth delivered 1.4 million total viewers.
Time Warner Cable Los Angeles has given its 1.9 million subscribers more music with the addition of digital channels MTV Hits, MTV Jams and VH1 Soul. Time Warner LA will also receive new content for its VOD service from MTV Networks that includes Fashion Attack and backstage coverage at the MTV Movie Awards.
Isaiah Washington, aka Dr. Preston Burke on Grey’s Anatomy, will not be returning next season – his contract has not been renewed. Washington was at the center of controversy this past season when his anti-gay remarks, which he later publicly said he was “sorry and embarrassed” about making.
Assistant District Attorney Jack McCoy has been promoted to District Attorney, filling the office recently vacated by DA Arthur Branch (Fred Thompson, now US Presidential hopeful). That may also mean that as we will see less of Waterston in his 14th season on the Law & Order series, as the DA typically only gets a couple of scenes in each episode, as opposed to the majority of the latter half of the show.
The FX drama Damages, scheduled to debut next season and starring Glenn Close and Ted Danson, has added Peter Facinelli to the cast.
