Good morning, it’s Friday, June 4, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
Fresh off swallowing AdMob, Google has agreed to acquire demand-side advertising platform Invite Media for a reported $70 million, purveyor of the “Bid Manager” buying platform for display ads. The system enables media buyers to tailor their bids for inventory on an impression-by-impression basis in real time, helping publishers to maximize CPMs for their most desired inventory. The technology should be a perfect fit for Google’s DoubleClick exchange, which already enables real-time buying. In other online ad news, MySpace has signed a deal with in stream ad platform Ad.ly to enable content creators put their ads in their MySpace (or Twitter) news stream, including celebrities, filmmakers, musicians and social influencers. Visit MySpace.com/adly to sign up and create a profile. The integration will enable advertisers to pitch you products you want to support, which you can either approve or reject.
Is your cable company still at war with the NFL Network? There may yet be a way to watch the network’s Thursday night games. Tribune announced a deal with the NFL yesterday acquiring over-the-air local broadcast rights to six late-season NFL Network games, beginning with the Chicago Bears vs. Miami Dolphins on Thursday, Nov. 18. Tribune stations in 8 markets will air the games: New York (WPIX-TV), Chicago (WGN-TV), Philadelphia (WPHL-TV), Houston (KIAH-TV), Miami (WSFL-TV), Dallas (KDAF-TV), San Diego (KSWB-TV) and Indianapolis (WXIN-TV).
Here’s a little Cyn Digital exclusive – Comcast’s G4 network is going to launch its first original web series on G4tv.com during the E3 gaming confab this month. “Feedback” will be a long-form talk show delving into the latest news, releases, controversies and trends in video gaming, hosted by G4 Games Content and X-Play Host Adam Sessler.
CBS Interactive‘s GameSpot website will also feature over 45 hours live interactive coverage of E3 this year from the show floor. A new feature will enable fans to direct a cameraman towards the most popular destination on the show floor, who will in turn deliver live, embeddable footage.
James Cameron said he is considering a sequel to Avatar at the D8 conference, but regardless of what he makes next, it will be shot in 3D.
Gravitas Ventures, a VOD distributor of indie films and programming, has inked a deal with YouTube, to add to the portal’s VOD rental options through the dedicated GravitasVOD channel. The channel features a mixture of ad supported and rental pics. For instance, Pixies fans may want to check out loudQUIETloud, a documentary about the band’s 2004 reunion tour that digs into the idiosyncrasies of the band’s chemistry, renting for $2.99.
Twitter is testing a new feature that lines up profile pictures of users you and a person you visit both follow.
New York-based visual Effects house Phosphene has worked on HBO‘s upcoming docudrama on Dr. Jack Kevorkian, “You Don’t Know Jack,” to allow the producers to seamlessly substitute footage of the film’s star Al Pacino into archival footage of Dr. Jack himself. Creative Director John Bair and VFX Executive Producer Vivian Connolly lensed various locations in New York and New Jersey to make it work, matching angles, time of day, lighting, etc. then composited the backgrounds into the driving scenes in the film. Phosphene has also worked to help recreate New Orleans after the deluge in HBO’s new David Simon series Treme.
Independent mobile advertising platform Millennial Media released new Software Developer Kits (SDKS) for iPhone and Android, their third release for each platform in less than 6 months. The new Android kit brings iPhone-like ad functionality for the time with features such as static & video interstitials, expanding banner ads, transparent overlays and companion ads.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that more than half of Facebook’s users have played around with the privacy settings at the D8 Conference, suggesting that most users understand the current privacy tools and are comfortable with sharing info. However, he continued to dodge the question of why Facebook’s new Instant Personalization features are opt-out instead of opt-in.
While the FCC busies itself with its Broadband Plan, the Abu Dhabi government has launched an investment fund for the development of apps within the Middle East & North Africa region. AppsArabia, powered by web tool maker twofour54, is soliciting ideas for apps from entrepreneurs, app developers and businesses and will provide commercial guidance, resources and marketing support to make the apps successful.
The consensus is that AT&T’s new iPhone data scheme won’t end up costing users any more than they’re already paying. Independent Consumer Reports data shows that only about 4% of all iPhone users consume an average of more than 1 GB of data a month, so the new 2GB plan for $20 should save even heavier users money. (The previous data bill for iPhone users was a flat $30). If only the same could be said for the much more data-intensive iPad.
Paid Games and Entertainment apps on Apple’s App Store tend to stay popular for longer, according to a the latest Distimo Report analyzing mobile application consumption.
- The paid applications that have been in the Top 5 for the longest period of time are Doodle Jump (140 days), RedLaser (73 days) and Skee-Ball (68 days)
- The paid apps that has been number one for the longest period of time is Skee-Ball (24 days)
- The free apps that have been in the Top 5 for the longest are Facebook (12 days) and Paper Toss (7 days)
- the highest ranked paid iPad app for April was Pages, followed by GoodReader for iPad, and Pinball HD
- The highest ranked free iPad app in the Apple App Store was iBooks, followed by The Solitaire and Break HD Free
Social game company Watercooler has partnered with Fox Soccer to launch Epic Goal, a new Facebook game that lets users form teams with their friends, train their players and lead their teams to victory in a cool match-play simulation. A Spanish-language version due June 9 and both versions will also be available on Fox Soccer Channel’s website.
Zinkia Entertainment‘s international avatar creation app Pocoyo is launching a new World Cup-themed app for the iPhone in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. Competitions will be held to create cutesy avatars that look like World Cup team players. Completed creations can be used as iPhone profile pictures, sent to friends or posted on social networking sites such as Facebook.
Check out the $1.99 Hollywood Hospital game from Zed Worldwide (Pang, Planet51 Racer). Manage a hospital frequented by celebrities who come in for rehab. Hire doctors who are specialists in certain fields to prosper so that you can afford better facilities.
Capcom Mobile and Classic Media is launching another Hollywood themed game – a sequel to their Where’s Waldo? mobile game available on multiple N. American carriers. “Where’s Waldo? in Hollywood” features a selection of tinsel-town themed adventures.
XOS Digital has hired former CBS Interactive executive Barry Loudis as VP of its Digital Sports Networks.
Chasing the genre that drives so many views and clicks online, CNN has revamped its online Entertainment section to feature larger paparazzi pictures, up-to-the minute celebrity news and additional content sourced from partners InStyle, People and EW magazines. Giving a whole new meaning the Vox Populi concept, the section is also being organized to capitalize on the latest trends of how folks consume content online. Akin to Twitter’s “Trending Topics,” the site will soon roll out a “Trending Now” feature that automatically populates the top section with the hottest celebrity stories on the web as determined by user activity on Facebook, Twitter and CNN.com. (CNN developers are still tweaking the algorithm, so currently the top stories are still selected by editors.) For instance, the death of the latest Golden Girl Rue McClanahan was by far the most prominent Entertainment story yesterday, with over 6,500 people recommending the story from CNN’s Facebook page. For a taste of how this works, check out the NewsPulse section added to the CNN home page late last year, which prioritizes stories by the number of comments and shares they generate. The next CNN section to receive a makeover will be the Tech section later this summer.
