Cynopsis: Kids!
06/25/10
Good morning. It’s Friday, June 25, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Alloy, Inc., the tween/teen-centric media and marketing company, is being acquired by an investor group led by ZelnickMedia for about $127 million. Geraldine Laybourne, formerly CEO of Nickelodeon, will serve as Chairman of the Board. Alloy co-founders, Matt Diamond and Jim Johnson, will continue to run the company as CEO and COO, respectively. Diamond and Johnson will exchange a portion of their Alloy shares for an equity interest in the acquiring group. The rest of the Alloy senior management team is expected to remain in place as well. Also joining the Board is former COO, Marvel Entertainment, Bill Jemas, who will work closely with the company on merchandising, content and business affairs. Leslie Morgenstein, CEO of Alloy Entertainment will work with Laybourne and Jemas, focusing on Alloy’s entertainment assets. The plan moving forward is to grow Alloy into a major entertainment and media brand reaching people 10-29. Alloy is the parent company of Alloy Entertainment, known for its TV series and movies including Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars and The Vampire Diaries, as well as Channel One, the Alloy Digital Network, which is comprised of tweens/teens/college kids aimed websites, and the recently launched Alloy TV. The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Following reports that Hasbro was in discussions with private investors concerning a buyout, the toy company issued this statement on market rumors yesterday:
- Hasbro stated today that it is not having any discussions regarding the sale of the company. Hasbro confirmed that it had been approached by a private equity firm regarding a transaction, and said that its Board of Directors determined that there was no interest in pursuing such transaction.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Production has begun on the new animated preschool series Doc McStuffins, which is slated to premiere on soon to be branded Disney Junior programming blocks on Disney Channel, and Disney Junior channels around the world from 2011. Produced in Dublin by Brown Bag Films in association with Disney Channel, Doc McStuffins is created by Chris Nee (Little Bill), who will also serve as executive producer. Designed to underline the importance of healthy living and taking care of oneself, the series revolves around Dottie “Doc” McStuffins, a 6-year-old that communicates with stuffed animals and toys and tends to all the neighborhood toys in need of care at her backyard community clinic, with the help of some of her other toy pals who come to life. The Hollywood Health & Society division of the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center will serve as the health and medical consultant for the series.
Random House Children’s Screen Entertainment (RHCSE), a production entity and joint venture of Random House Children’s Books (RHCB) and Komixx Entertainment, acquires options for four RHCB titles to be developed as TV series. The four book titles and TV plans are as follows:
- Fish-Head Steve – a cartoon comic strip by Jamie Smart that was initially published in the DFC. The property is being developed as an animated TV series with scripts and a pilot in the works. The story revolves around a group of friends that wake one day with weird new heads. RHCSE will showcase the project at Cartoon Forum this September.
- Gargoylz – the preschool-targeted project by Jan Burchett and Sara Vogler will be developed as a live-action CGI series. The story follows the adventures of impish Gargoylz monsters that use their powers to make mischief. A Gargoylz book will be published fro World Book Day in March 2011.
- Princess Poppy – based on the eponymous picture books by Janey Louise Jones, is also being developed as an animated TV series.
- The Charlie Small – a book series from author Nick Ward will be developed as live-action CGI movie or TV series. The books follow the adventures of a fearless eight-year-old that has lived for 400+ years as he tries to make his way back home.
