Cynopsis: Kids!
06/18/10

Good morning. It’s Thursday, June 17, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Those ever-popular meddling kids return to Cartoon Network in the animated Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, premiering Monday, July 12 at 7p.  Set in the creepy coastal village of Crystal Cove, Scooby and the gang investigates (and no doubt snacks) their way through ghost and monster mysteries, all the while dealing with their teenage problems and related family issues.  From Warner Bros. Animation, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated features the voices of Frank Welker (What’s New, Scooby-Doo?) as Fred/Scooby-Doo, Mindy Cohn (The Facts of Life) as Velma, Grey DeLisle (Batman: The Brave and the Bold) as Daphne and Matthew Lillard (the Scooby-Doo films) as Shaggy.  The series is executive produced by Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10, Batman: The Brave and the Bold), with Spike Brandt and Tony Cervone (both Duck Dodgers, Back at the Barnyard, Space Jam) serving as supervising producers.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Will Pac-Man return to TV?  Yes, Avi Arad plans to bring Pac-Man back in a 3D chomping animated series, per Variety.  Arad, former CEO/Marvel Studios and currently advising Namco Bandai, screened a short trailer for the series at E3 this week.  The new series would find the same lovable Pac-Man now in high school.  Pac-Man and his pals would go up against ghouls trying to ruin his world.  This time around Pac-Man’s friends are the good ghosts Pinky, Inky, Blinky and Clyde – yes, they were his enemies in the arcade game.  There are no TV or distribution deals in place for the idea.

MORE KIDS STUFF

MTV Networks International finalizes two Latin American deals for Nickelodeon branded programming blocks with Telenica (Nicaragua) and Venevision (Venezuela).  The Telenica block includes Dora The Explorer, Go! Diego, Go! Back at the Barnyard, SpongeBob SquarePants, Penguins of Madagascar, iCarly, and Ni-Hao Kai-Lan.  The Venevision renewal includes Back at the Barnyard, Big Time Rush, Fairly Odd Parents, Fanboy & Chum Chum, and iCarly, SpongeBob SquarePants, Penguins of Madagascar, Tak & the Power of Juju, The Mighty B! and True Jackson.

Elsewhere, MTVNI and terrestrial broadcaster TVE (Spain) complete new and renewed deals for programming to air across its channels including Clan TVE.  New deals include the live-action series iCarly and the animated comedy Penguins of Madagascar.  Renewed broadcast pacts include SpongeBob SquarePants (aka Bob Esponja) and Dora the Explorer (aka Dora la Exploradora).  Both series continue to air on Nickelodeon Spain.

First Lady Michelle Obama is reaching out to kids this summer asking them to get outside and get active in her ongoing Let’s Move initiative to fight childhood obesity.  In support of her efforts, this week the National Park Service kicks off Let’s Move Outside Junior Rangers ( www.letsmove.gov/outside) beginning in 20 US parks and expanding to 50 by the end of the summer.  The program encourages kids to earn their Junior Ranger badge. Kids who complete at least one physical activity (e.g. hiking, body surfing, canoeing) at specific parks around the country as they work to earn their Junior Ranger badge will receive a special sticker.  Led by the Department of the Interior and the Department of Agriculture, Let’s Move Outside is designed as a way for kids and parents to have fun outside and be active in national parks, as well as providing them with information.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The TV movie Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars inks home entertainment deals in the US and Canada.  Based on author Louise Fitzhugh’s Harriet the Spy books, Blog Wars offers a comedic modern twist on the stories.  Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars was produced by Canada’s 9 Story Entertainment and premiered earlier this year on Disney Channel.

  • Vivendi Entertainment (VE) acquires the exclusive US home video and limited digital rights to Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars.
  • E1 Entertainment Canada will release Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars on DVD this. The TV movie marks the beginning of an ongoing distribution deal between E1 and 9 Story.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Rita Ferro has been promoted to EVP/Disney Media Sales and Marketing.  Ferro will relocate to New York from Miami, where toiled as part of the Disney and ESPN’s Latin American business team since 1997, most recently as VP/Ad Sales, Disneymedia+. She takes over the reins from Tricia Wilber who was recently appointed CMO, Disney EMEA.  Ferro will lead the integrated sales team that represents ad sales, marketing and promotions across Disney’s media platforms aimed at kids, moms and families, including its kid-targeted TV channels, online offerings, its mom-focused publishing business, and its kid/mom-centric radio platform.  Ferro will report to three business unit leaders  Carolina Lightcap, President/Disney Channels Worldwide; Paul Yanover, EVP and MD/Disney Online, and Russell Hampton, President/Disney Publishing Worldwide.

Chapman Entertainment continues to grow with the appointments of Erin Duffy as Financial Controller and Rebecca Caine as Brand Manager.  Duffy will report to Andrew Haydon, Commercial and Finance Director, and will be supported by Barrie Mitelman, Finance Manager and Agnieszka Earl, Management Accountant.  She joins the company from Ora Capital Partners where she was Group Financial Controller.  Caine will serve as the new Brand Manger on Rah Rah The Noisy Lion and Roary the Racing Car, reporting to Director/Marketing, Melissa Brown.  She previously toiled as Marketing Manager for Gibsons Games and in BBC Worldwide’s Children’s Licensing Division.
