Now both of Microsoft‘s founding fathers have cemented their place in (philanthropy) heaven. Microsoft co-founder and Vulcan Ventures Chairman Paul Allen announced he is committing most of his estimated $13.5 billion fortune to charity, chiefly through his Paul G. Allen Family Foundation (which celebrated its 20th Anniversary yesterday). He stressed that the foundation’s efforts and scientific research will continue after his death, but did not specify what areas the group would focus on. So far Allen, who overcame a bout with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma last Nov., has concentrated much of his giving to nonprofit groups in the Pacific Northwest.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Netflix has expanded its deal with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment to license streaming rights for a number of catalog TV shows including FX hit Nip/Tuck (acquired by Logo for cable,) Veronica Mars, Pushing Daisies and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The studio recently agreed to license feature films to Netflix, 28 days after their home video release. Netflix is due to report Q2 earnings next week.
 
England’s public broadcaster BBC.com has relaunched its flagship news site with the thinking that less is more, offering a cleaner look, improved navigation, more video and visuals and better showcasing of top stories.
 
CBS Consumer Products
has boldly gone where no one has gone before and relaunched StarTrek.com. The redesign features 167 full-length ad supported episodes of the original show in HD, news, merchandise, message boards, galleries and special guest contributions from cast member such as Leonard (I Am Not Spock, Scratch that, I Am Spock) Nimoy.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

There’s a new trailer out for “The Social Network,” the upcoming Facebook feature film expose, set to Scala’s version of Creep. It’s a little less creepy than the first one.
 
Discover Magazine and Revision3 have partnered with High Noon Entertainment to produce a new series that is sort of Bill Nye the Science Guy meets Will It Blend?. Joe Genius, hosted by comedian Jonah Ray, will feature homegrown science experiments and highlight popular science-themed viral videos.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Google bounced back during Q2 to another stellar quarter, with earnings climbing 24% to $1.84 billion on revenue of $6.82 billion. Google search generated $4.5 billion or 66% of total revenues with AdSense partners generating $2.06 billion or 30% of total revenues.
 
Starbucks
has surpassed 10 million fans on Facebook, notes Mediapost – passing Coke as the most popular corporate brand on the social network. The coffee chain has added scores of followers by launching promotions such as coupons for free pastries that can be redeemed at local stores.
 
ComScore‘s new metrics platform (see below) has given birth to a new set of video ad rankings for the month of June. The Top Video Ad Properties gives us a look at the top viewed ad supported video properties (including ad networks), specifying reach and frequency and ranked by video ads viewed:

ComScore has also ranked TV Content Sites in terms of the total number of monthly ads they serve per viewer. As one might expect, Hulu leads with 24.2 ads viewed per viewer, followed by TheWB.com (20), ABC.com (15.6) and Fox.com (12.9).

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
The Chinese government is now setting its censorship efforts on Twitter-style microblogs in an effort to blunt criticism and “harmful foreign information,” reports the AP. Dozens of outspoken bloggers are suddenly unable to access their own blogs, as an official from the State Council Information Office confirmed the effort.
 
Invision Inc. has signed a deal with Current TV to provide its DealMaker software to manage the network’s ad sales operations across traditional and new media channels.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Online measurement service ComScore has revamped its Video Metrix service to give clients more flexibility and more granular results. Additionally, the company plans to introduce an updated Gross Rating Point (GRP) metric in the coming months to better measure cross-media comparability with TV. New features include the ability to toggle video viewing from content to ads and the ability to easily view reporting metrics that previously had to be cumbersomely calculated manually, including ave. daily unique viewers, viewing sessions, percentage of ads by videos viewed, percentage of ads by time spent viewing video, ads per content video and content minutes per ad minute. New rankings now rank overall views by unique viewers but also count viewing sessions and time spent per viewer. In June, Google led the field with over 1.8 billion viewing sessions but Hulu led in terms of engagement with an ave. of nearly 135 minutes per viewer.

A day before calling a press conference to presumably deal with the iPhone 4’s antenna-gate, Apple released updates of its latest operating systems for the iPhone and iPad. iPhone OS version 4.0.1 promises to improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength appear on the phone. The new iPad OS 3.2.1 adds Microsoft’s Bing search as an option and improves Wi-Fi connectivity.

Maurizio Vitale has been named SVP/Marketing of OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, due to launch Jan 1, 2011. He is responsible for all on-air and off-air branding, marketing and promotional opportunities and reports to Christina Norman, CEO.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Putting movie and TV catalog listings and trailers up online is nothing new. But there are only a couple of companies that have built full digital trading marketplaces, enabling actual licensing deals to be struck online. Ascent Media’s GMX online marketplace has been open to the public since Oct. 2009 and says it is beginning to attract a critical mass of buyers and sellers using the platform to close deals. (There are currently 6,000 titles and nearly 800 companies participating.) The interface allows certified buyers (it’s not a public site) to shop for available titles by a variety of parameters, including programming genre, country, language, demo and metadata-powered keyword. Putting together a deal folder is as easy as adding a product to your Amazon wishlist, and an automated licensing “wizard” takes buyers through the 10-step process of writing up an offer. “We see ourselves as being supplemental to deal making apparatus already out there,” says Daniel Punt, Director of Biz Dev at GMX. “Many large deals will continue to be done at the larger markets but we’re seeing many smaller deals get struck year round from players from all over the globe.” The GMX platform will soon add the ability to screen entire feature films online to prospective buyers. Also on the agenda, although not all licensees have expressed interest, is to make rights avails available on specific titles so buyers know what titles have already been spoken for in their perspective markets.
