Cynopsis: DIGITAL
01.25.13

Good morning. It’s Friday, January 25, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

We are pleased to announce Roberta Caploe has joined Cynopsis as Editorial Director. She will oversee all of Cynopsis’s e-newsletters and e-special reports, including Cynopsis flagship, Cynopsis Digital, Cynopsis Sports and Cynopsis Kids. She’ll also collaborate on the development of the growing roster of Cynopsis Media business summits, award events, Webinars, and other initiatives. Roberta will be attending NATPE  so please feel free to reach out to her at [email protected].

AOL has signed a licensing deal with Discovery Communications to bring short-form videos from Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Science Channel, and Military Channel to The AOL On Network. The videos will be programmed into AOL On’s existing 14 channel categories, which include TV, Lifestyle, Home, Beauty/Fashion/Style, Food, Education, Travel Information, Autos, Health, Maps, and Technology. The short-form videos include excerpts from shows like Discovery’s MythBusters and its annual Shark Week programming, TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress, and Animal Planet’s River Monsters. Content from Discovery and Revision3’s recently launched online video series, DNews, will also be available across all AOL On apps.

The second season of Burning Love, a comedy series that parodies reality shows like The Bachelor, will premiere on Yahoo Screen on — appropriately enough — Valentine’s Day. Season two puts the spotlight on Julie (June Diane Raphael), a contestant on the first season of the show who now has her own opportunity to find The One. Vying for her heart are a bunch of new male contestants played by a who’s who of recognizable comedians and actors, including Jerry O’Connell, Michael Cera, Adam Brody, Colin Hanks, Joe Lo Truglio, Ryan Hansen, Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer, Nick Kroll, Nick Thune, Martin Starr, and Kumail Nanjiani. They join returning cast members June Diane Raphael, Ken Marino, Michael Ian Black, and Adam Scott. New episodes will air every Thursday and Friday, beginning with the premiere on February 14. The second season was written by Erica Oyama (Childrens Hospital) and directed by Ken Marino (Childrens Hospital, Party Down). Executive Producers include Red Hour’s Ben Stiller, Stuart Cornfeld, and Mike Rosenstein; Abominable Pictures’ Jonathan Stern; and Ken Marino and Erica Oyama’s Dancing Workfriend. Paramount’s Insurge Pictures is distributing the project with Yahoo having exclusive first window rights.

In other news from Yahoo: The company’s Sports division has unveiled its digital programming plans surrounding next week’s Super Bowl between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers. Video coverage from New Orleans will begin on January 27 and continue through the evening of February 3. It will consist of daily features and athlete and celebrity interviews from the host city. Yahoo Sports will also tape its Super Bowl preview show, NFL This Week, on location with host Melissa Knowles and NFL analyst and former star Eddie George. Users will also be able to check out six hours of live-streaming coverage from the Media Center in New Orleans, Wednesday to Friday of Super Bowl week. The live streaming coverage will feature Yahoo Sports Radio’s daily show in a TV-style set-up. That’s not all, Yahoo’s second-screen app IntoNow will allow users to check stats and headlines, converse with others, take polls, and view and vote on commercials.

Netflix released its Q4 2012 earnings report yesterday, which showed that the company actually generated a net income of $8 million and hitting $945 million in revenue. While that’s all well and good, the most interesting aspect of the earnings report was what Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and CFO David Wells had to say about the company’s slate of original content:

    • Likening Netflix’s release strategy of making all episodes available from the beginning to that of books, Hastings and Wells dubbed it the “future of television” — mostly because it allows viewers to consume content at their own pace. “Linear channels must aggregate a large audience at a given time of day and hope the show programmed will actually attract enough viewers despite this constraint,” Hastings and Wells said in the letter.
    • Since Netflix doesn’t have to program content in such a fashion, Hastings and Wells argue that it opens up opportunities for the company to make more money. “With Netflix, members can enjoy a show anytime, and over time, we can effectively put the right show in front of members based on their viewing habits. Thus we can spend less on marketing while generating higher viewership,” they said.
    • This release strategy is also a benefit to content creators, who can “concentrate on multi-episode story arcs, rather than pilots. Creators can work on episode 11 confident that viewers have recently enjoyed episodes one to 10,” said Hastings and Wells.
  • Which all led to this quote: “If we are successful with our originals, we will produce content with comparable cost per viewing hour to other exclusive premium content,” said Hastings and Wells.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

MediaMath has purchased Akamai’s Advertising Decision Solutions (ADS) to enhance its Data Management Platform (DMP). ADS is a data co-op that lets buyers share their data for better audience segmentation. Per the deal, MediaMath will acquire all of the assets associated with Akamai’s ADS business, and will integrate the Akamai ADS team into its workforce. The two companies have also agreed to a multi-year deal under which MediaMath will gain exclusive rights to Akamai’s “pixel-free” technology for digital advertising and marketing applications. The pixel-free technology is designed to give advertisers the ability to reach 100% of a site’s pages. This means that advertisers who use this technology will no longer have to worry about tagging only a select few pages so as to not slow down their sites.  Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Video streaming solutions start-up Ooyala has launched a new product called Twitter Video Card, which it actually developed in collaboration with Twitter. Twitter Video Card allows Ooyala customers to embed videos directly inside their tweets. It shows up as a thumbnail in the Twitter stream, which followers can click on to play without having to leave the social media site. Since Ooyala worked with Twitter on the Twitter Video Card, the product has received official certification from the social media company. This means the embedded videos will be accessible across all Twitter platforms, including its desktop and mobile websites, as well as its native apps for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. ESPN is the first company to sign up to use the new product. The Twitter Video Card is also armed with Ooyala’s video discovery technology, which will algorithmically surface relevant videos once a user has finished watching a particular clip. Using ESPN as an example, the Ooyala player within the tweet will be able to recommend a post-game press conference clip to a user who has just watched highlights from that game. For advertisers, Ooyala notes that Twitter Video Cards will be able to tie ads (presumably pre-rolls) to the embedded videos.

Streamworks International is partnering with Immersive Media, a provider of 360-degree, interactive video experiences. Per the deal, Streamworks will provide back-end encoding and delivery for Immersive Media’s front-end streaming of various 360-degree live video projects, which include music concerts and other live events. Using its proprietary compression technology, Streamworks will be able to deliver Immersive’s content on any type of device. Immersive Media is best known for the work it has done in producing Google’s now-popular “Street View” product. The company also partnered with Lloyds TSB to follow the Olympic Torch during the London 2012 Summer Olympics, and with CBS to stream last year’s Republican and Democratic National Convention.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

Global tablet sales hit 64 million units in Q4 2012, which equals quarterly growth of nearly 100% and year-over-year growth of 119%, according to new data released by Futuresource Consulting. “The Q4 period accounted for nearly half of all tablet sales last year, culminating in total sales of 136 million units for 2012,” says Arun Gill, Market Analyst at Futuresource Consulting.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Screenvision has teamed up with Dobi Film to premiere Please Subscribe: A Documentary About YouTubers in film theaters across the US for one night only on February 5 at 7:30pm. Sponsored by My Damn Channel and Digitour 2013, the documentary follows several of the top YouTube stars today, including Daily Grace, Hannah Hart, MysteryGuitarMan, and SeaNanners, and takes a look at how they’re reshaping the entertainment model by producing, distributing, and monetizing their content on the web. It should be an interesting study on how to successfully reach and build audiences on the web. It’s what I find most fascinating about the YouTube experiment in creating original online channels — that in many cases, the initial success stories feature those who had an established presence on YouTube prior to the site’s original content initiative.
