Good morning. It’s Friday, January 11, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Worldwide PC shipments hit 89.8 million units in Q4 2012, falling 6.4% year-over-year and worse than the initial forecast of a 4.4% drop, according to new numbers from the IDC. The research firm acknowledges that the previous quarter was a significant one in the life of the PC industry, but says the impact of Windows 8 wasn’t enough to change sluggish PC demand. In fact, the holiday season didn’t even help, as this was the first time in more than five years that the PC market witnessed a year-over-year decline during the holiday season. In the US, the market struggled but less than originally expected, says IDC.

To drive buzz and tune-in for the January 13 premiere of Showtime‘s Shameless, the premium cable channel has linked up with digital agency Campfire to launch the Shameless Awards. The Awards are meant for users to publicly/socially recognize those who are at the top of their shameless list. The campaign website introduces and demonstrates the concept via a collection of video content mimicking the videos and montages that one usually sees during actual awards shows. The site also allows users to check a stream of who has recently been given one of these awards. Shameless stars William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum, and follows a down-on-their-luck family and their aggressive/insane exploits.

BBC Worldwide Americas has launched BBC Autos, a new section on dedicated to car culture. “We’ve made a commitment to expand and enrich with new feature sections that delve into topics our audience is most interested in,” said Nick Ascheim, SVP/Consumer Digital at BBC Worldwide Americas. “Not only did autos stand out in our customer research, but our advertising partners also indicated a strong interest in the subject area, particularly given the strength of our existing coverage from BBC News and BBC Sport, and of course because of the connection to everyone’s favorite, Top Gear.” BBC says the Autos section will look to complement and build upon the content produced by BBC news, BBC Sport, and Top Gear. It will be comprised of a wide range of content, from features on automobile culture and industry to profiling “car-tribes,” to more visual content like a video series that tests cars using ordinary people.

The Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills will live stream An Evening with Suits, a special event that will feature the mid-second season premiere episode and a panel discussion and Q&A with the show’s cast and creative team. The live-stream will begin this Monday night at 7:50pm PT, available via Those who are not in attendance but want to submit questions can do so on Twitter using #PaleyLiveLA hash-tag.


Time Warner Cable has selected Digitalsmiths’ Seamless Discovery platform to power video search and recommendations across Time Warner’s TV Everywhere offerings on connected devices. Digitalsmiths says this improved video search and recommendations functionality within the TWC TV app/service will be personalized to the individual.

In almost identical news, i.TV, the company behind the popular TV guide app for iOS devices as well as second-screen experiences for brands like AOL and Nintendo, has also picked Digitalsmiths’ Seamless Discovery platform for powering video discovery on a number of devices. Through this partnership with Digitalsmiths, i.TV will use the Seamless Discovery technology to develop personalized search and recommendations features for its own products as well as for those it creates for partners. i.TV recently announced a partnership with Nintendo to co-create Nintendo TVii, a built-in video discovery service on the new Wii U console.

While 18- to 24-year-olds are the heaviest online video consumers (averaging almost an hour-and-a-half each week), a new Nielsen study makes the argument that consumption differs within the demographic itself, largely due to the variance in consumer lifestyle, education, and living situation.In the study, Nielsen broke down the demographic into five segments: extended home college students (those who live at school but are still considered a part of the household); independent college students (attend college and identify themselves as independent household members); college students living with parents (commuters); college graduations; and non-college students. Here’s some data on them based on the 2011-2012 school year:

  • Independent college students were less likely to own a DVR, gaming console, or tablet. 15% of college graduates owned a tablet, compared to just 8% among independent students.
  • 72% of extended home college students have a gaming console inside their home. That number drops to 53% when the same group is in their extended homes, such as a dorm room.
  • Extended home college students are the heaviest video streamers. On the days this group watched both traditional TV and streamed content on PCs, 18% of that time was spent streaming versus 82% spent watching traditional TV.

A new study from Idea & Solutions! Inc. measured 11 brand attributes that compared Google with other pay-TV operators in the Kansas City metro area (where Google is currently at work on developing and offering Google Fiber). The results showed Google surpassing the incumbent operators across all 11 attributes. Per the results, when survey participants were asked about new IP-based TV apps on devices, close to 88% of respondents picked Google Fiber as the better provider. In terms of cloud-based services, 90% picked Google. Even when looking at consumer privacy protection, something with which Google does have a little bit of public trouble, Google beat out incumbent operators (60% versus 40%) among respondents. The incumbent service providers have a little bit of an advantage when it comes to video, at least traditional video. Of the survey participants who have already paid the pre-registration fee for Google Fiber, 40% intend to get broadband services from Google but still pay for TV with another company. Why? Concerns over not having access to all of their favorite channels. The study consisted of 1,303 interviews fielded between October 19 and November 14 of last year. 531 of the interviews were with adults 18-74 who live in a current Google “fiber-hood”. The rest of them were conducted nationwide for benchmarking purposes.


NBCUniversal’s NBC Owned Television Stations division is programming several specials tied to this Sunday night’s Golden Globes. The centerpiece of this programming block is 1st Look Live on the Red Carpet, which is a one-hour special that will air across all 10 NBC-owned television stations beginning at 6pm ET on Sunday night. Aside from the regular red carpet shenanigans, the special is also getting the social TV boost from Zeebox. During the show, Zeebox users will be able to vote on their favorite fashions, access trending tweets and topics related to the Globes, and see additional photos. Last September, it was announced that both Comcast and NBCUniversal would be making an investment in Zeebox as well as giving it some promotional support.


Microsoft has named Blake Krikorian to the position of Corporate VP/Interactive Entertainment Business (IEB). This appointment follows Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Krikorian’s company, id8 Group R2 Studios. He will report to Marc Whitten, Chief Product Officer at IEB. “We are thrilled to have Blake join the Xbox team,” said Whitten in a statement. “We look forward to his contribution to our team as Xbox continues to evolve and transform the games and entertainment landscape.” Krikorian is the Co-Founder, and former Chairman and CEO of Sling Media, the makers of the nifty Slingbox, which is now owned by Echostar.

A+E Networks has promoted Randi Pollack to Senior Director/Legal & Business Affairs and Digital Media & International Distribution Counsel. She will continue to work with A+E’s Digital Media Division on matters relating to digital ad sales, website development, content management infrastructure, and content licensing, among others. A+E says she plays a key role with its International Division, where she handles program sales in Eastern & Central Europe and Russia, and a key role in many types of digital media agreements ranging from program distribution to technology contracts to software licensing. Pollack also advises the company on various regulatory matters related to digital media, privacy, and data security.

Magisto is an automatic online and mobile video editing service that allows users to create and share personal videos with friends and families. Magisto says it now has an updated algorithm that uses the Themes as a guide to adjust the app’s automated editing style, the goal being to have the video be edited in such a way that it fits the user’s mood at that time. Magisto has over 3 million registered users right now and is available for free on iOS and Android devices, as well as on the web.
