Good morning. It’s Friday, February 8, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Viacom’s coverage of this year’s Grammy Awards this Sunday night includes a red carpet live-stream from 6pm to 8pm ET, which will be co-produced by MTV News and VH1 News and will be available on MTV.com, VH1.com, CMT.com, NewNowNext.com, and Ustream, as well as the MTV News mobile app. Hosted by MTV News’ Sway Calloway and James Montgomery, along with VH1’s Big Morning Buzz Live’s Carrie Keagan and VH1’s Top 20 Countdown’s Jim Shearer, the live-stream will also feature fashion commentary from Karlie Kloss, model and co-host of MTV’s House of Style. The live-stream will expand to on-air coverage on MTV every 30 minutes until show time.
Healthy-snack brand Luna, which makes the popular nutrition bar for women, has launched a new web series on Lunabar.com called Debunking the Diet. In it, actress and comedian Erin Gibson tries to shine a light on current eating trends as well as common dieting and nutrition misconceptions via on-the-street interviews with women. The first of six episodes is already online, with new ones to roll out every two weeks, covering topics such as skipping meals, carb myths, and eating after 8pm.
CBS Interactive has unveiled a new web reality show about e-sports gamers called GameCrib. CBS Interactive’s GameSpot property partnered with Qualcomm and TSM Snapdragon, a popular e-sports pro-gaming team, to create a Real World-style reality show that documents the lives of TSM Snapdragon as they share a house in the San Francisco Bay Area. GameCrib will air every Wednesday from February 20 to June 14 this year on GameSpot.com. TwitchTV, an online community and video platform for gamers, will stream eight hours of live footage every day along with a highlights package that sums up the day’s action/stories. That’s not the only news from CBS Interactive when it comes to the world of pro-gaming leagues. GameSpot is also offering an exclusive live-stream of the EA Sports Challenge Series Finals in Las Vegas this weekend. The coverage begins at noon PT Saturday, February 9, and runs through midnight. It will also be available on-demand following the event.
ABC is partnering with out-of-home video network Outcast Media to air clips from TV shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live, The View, Good Morning America, and The Chew across 18,000 screens at gas pumps nationwide. ABC made the deal in order to reach Outcast’s audience of “ungettables,” which Outcast says consists of drivers 18-54 who travel more than 8,000 miles each year by car and live in the top 25 DMAs. “By providing custom content to people on-the-go, we are engaging potential new viewers and fans alike with rich, entertaining ABC programming,” said Marla Provencio, CMO and EVP/ABC Entertainment Group.
Virgin America is partnering with IFC this month to make Portlandia available on RED, the airline company’s in-flight entertainment system. The series will be available to customers on all of 52 Virgin America planes from February through May 2013. The content deal is part of a multiplatform marketing partnership between Virgin America and IFC to promote the airline’s new nonstop service between Los Angeles and San Francisco to Portland, as well as the critically acclaimed IFC comedy from Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein.
Digiboo, a digital retail download service that offers access to more than 800 film titles and 20 TV series via interactive touchscreen kiosks, has launched its first iOS app. Available for free in the iTunes App Store, consumers can rent or purchase content from any Digiboo kiosk and then download it directly from the app. Digidoo’s studio partners include Warner Bros., Paramount, Sony, Lionsgate, and Anchor Bay Entertainment. The first kiosks are in the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, and the Portland International Airport.
Social engagement start-up Livefyre has raised $15 million in Series C funding led by US Venture Partners, with contributions from existing investors Greycroft Partners, Cue Ball, HillsVen Group, and ff Venture Capital. Bringing the start-up’s total investment capital to date to over $20 million, the new funds will be used to expand Livefyre into new markets as well as accelerate product development in the mobile space. The company’s social commenting platform can be found on a large number of websites. Its customers include Bravo and Showtime, who have already integrated Livefyre’s social platform into their second-screen products. Livefyre’s StreamHub service enables clients to develop and launch real-time social experiences on their sites. Through StreamHub, clients have the ability to curate videos, images, and tweets from across the social web into live blogs, chats, widgets, and dashboards.
Boston-based digital marketing software company DataXu has closed a $27 million financing round led by Thomvest Ventures, with its existing major investors Atlas Ventures, Flybridge Capital Partners, and Menlo Ventures also participating. The funds will support DataXu’s ongoing global expansion and technology investments. “Our software helps marketers reduce the cost and complexity of marketing across multiple digital channels, while at the same time enabling them to build a much deeper and more actionable understanding of today’s empowered consumer,” said DataXu CEO Mike Baker in a statement. The company operates a multichannel demand side platform (DSP) that encompasses video, display, tablets, smartphones, and the Facebook Exchange.

Yahoo Japan has signed a pact with AdTruth, a provider of platform-agnostic device recognition technology, to enhance its audience recognition capabilities. AdTruth recently opened a new office in Tokyo. The company says its device recognition technology is privacy compliant, collects no personally identifiable information, and doesn’t leave “intrusive” device-side identifiers.
What are the early returns on House of Cards, Netflix’s $100 million gamble into original, TV-like programming? While the company isn’t offering any internal numbers yet, broadband services provider Procera Networks has released some data that could provide a good glimpse into how the political drama is faring with Netflix users. According to Procera, on one broadband network, 11% of Netflix subscribers watched at least one episode of House of Cards last weekend. The company also found that a little more than 2% of Netflix subscribers on a second network watched the first episode last Saturday. And here’s where it gets really interesting. Procera also measured consumption for the other 12 episodes and it found that 0.594% of Netflix subscribers on the same network (a quarter of those who watched the first episode) also watched the 13th episode, on the same Saturday.
WHY THIS MATTERS: Netflix has argued that its strategy of releasing every episode at once reflects its viewers’ binge consumption habits. If we take Procera’s numbers as solid benchmarks across all broadband networks, Netflix was right.
Telemundo Media has appointed Jesus Torres Viera as its new EVP/Programming and Content, effective immediately. In his new role, Torres Viera is responsible for developing and executing Telemundo network’s overall programming, content, and scheduling strategy, as well as leading the content rollout strategy across all Telemundo Media and emerging media platforms. He will report to Emilio Romano, President, Telemundo Media.
Santa Monica-based Gradient X, a provider of a programmatic marketing platform for mobile devices, has named Stephan Cunningham as its new VP/Marketplace Operations. In the role, Cunningham will oversee the Gradient X marketplace, including client, partner, and vendor relations, first and third-party data management, inventory packaging, and performance optimization. He will report to Gradient X CEO Brian Baumgart.
Dachis Group has hired Peter Kim to the newly created role of Chief Solutions Architect. This is Kim’s second go-around at the social marketing solutions firm, as he was its first employee and former Chief Strategy Officer. In his new role, Kim will be responsible for the continuous definition, development, and delivery of data-driven social marketing solutions for Dachis Group’s global clients and potential new customers.
