Cynopsis: Kids!
02/03/12
Good morning. It’s Friday, February 3, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
Teletoon Canada and Turner Broadcasting System have entered into partnership that will bring Cartoon Network and Adult Swim to Canadian TV this year. The new digital specialty network, which will be an ad-supported channel, will feature Cartoon Network every day 6a-9p, followed Adult Swim late-night lineup from 9p. The deal will see Teletoon launch the Cartoon Network brand in Canada in both standard and HD definition across linear TV, VOD, broadband and mobile platforms. Teletoon will also launch a French language Cartoon Network programming block, and make programming available online, through mobile and VOD for its French speaking audience. This partnership includes a programming, trademark and branding deal that will bring the best of Cartoon Network’s exclusive first-run content that has never been seen before in Canada, in addition to upwards of 2,000 half-hours of classic Cartoon Network and Adult Swim programming.
The Hunger Games feature film is coming to Imax for one week. The Lionsgate movie, based on the first book Suzanne Collins’ book trilogy, will be digitally re-mastered for release in Imax digital theaters in North America on Friday, March 23, 2012, the same day and date as traditional theaters. The Hunger Games movie is written and directed by Gary Ross and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force along with producer Jon Kilik, and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. Given the nature of the story it is kind of weirdly great (read the book) that it will be shown in Imax. But, and I’d guess it has something to do with scheduling, just one week? Hmmmm, wonder if that will change.
Thirteen, in association with WNET New York Pubic Media, and Ruckus Media Group enter into a digital partnership to produce storybook apps based on the PBS Kids Go! math/problem solving series Cyberchase. In addition to featuring math and problem solving interactive stories, including promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning, the Cyberchase apps will also include interactive components for parents. Ruckus will release 12 storybook app titles each year in two reading and math levels, with the first titles slated to release worldwide with English language distribution in April 2012 for various mobile devices and tablets. Produced by Thirteen, Cyberchase airs on 300+ public TV channels across the US.
Momiji (www.lovemomiji.com), creator of the eponymous line of 3-inch dolls, appoints licensing industry veteran Heidi Packer‘s HAP Consulting (www.hapllp.com) to handle the brand in North American. With roots in Tokyo, each of the 6-year-old UK-based company’s Momiji dolls comes with a tiny folded card inside where consumers can write a message or wish. Targeted to female tweens/teens/young adults, the popular collectible line of dolls, there are 150+, also has its graphic images now featured on merchandise too. The newest collection of Momiji dolls includes Bibi Button, Darcie Dot and Loreli Love. HAP is seeking new licensing partners for Momiji.

Moebius Models signs on to produce model kits including Munsters House Kids and Muster Family Character Kits. Moebius also renews its license for the original version of the sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica. Entertainment Earth also re-ups its licensing deals for Battlestar Galactica and Six Million Dollar Man, renewing in the categories of bar and glassware, bobbleheads, totes, license plate frames, magnets, lunch boxes and journals.
GameMill Entertainment, an indie publisher of mass-market video games, will bring the Gogo’s Crazy Bones toy characters and games to Nintendo DS with the release of the Gogo’s Crazy Bones game this March 2012. Developed by Black Lantern Studios, Gogo’s Crazy Bones the game for Nintendo DS carries an ESRB rating of “E” for Everyone. Jonic Distribution North America (JDNA) is the North American distributor for Gogo’s Crazy.
marblemedia gets the go ahead for a second season of the tween-targeted, medieval-themed physical game show Splatalot, which will include 26×30 new episodes. Renewing the series is YTV (Canada), CBBC (UK), ABC3 (Australia), and a version will be dubbed into French for Teletoon (French Canada). The new season of Splatalot, which will feature an expanded set and new obstacles, will begin shooting this summer at marblemedia’s studio in Canada. Look for marblemedia at Kidscreen Summit in NYC next week, February 7-10, 2012, where it will showcase Splatalot (52×30) with its partner company Distribution360, who is handling international TV, interactive and format sales.
Target Entertainment completes a number of new broadcast agreements for Chapman Entertainment‘s preschool series, including a new pact for Roary the Racing Car with Nickelodeon. Under the deal, the first season Roary the Racing Car (52×10) has been acquired by Nickelodeon’s international Nick Jr. Channels in Europe (including Benelux, Scandinavia, Germany, Spain and Italy), the Middle East, Asia (including India), Africa, Latin America and New Zealand. Season 2 (52×10) has also been acquired for Nickelodeon’s Scandinavian and Benelux feeds. Other recent Roary the Racing Car deals include: Rai Yoyo Italy takes season 2; Rai (Italy), SVT (Sweden) and YLE (Finland) have all renewed their licenses for season 1. Additionally, Target signs new deals for Chapman’s preschool series Raa Raa the Noisy Lion and Fifi and the Flowertots. Raa Raa the Noisy Lion has been picked up by TVNZ (New Zealand), RUV (Iceland), EBS (Korea) and Hop (Israel). The second season of Fifi and the Flowertots has been acquired by YLE (Finland) and the first season has been relicensed to ABC (Australia).
New broadcast deals have been completed for Nickelodeon’s animated comedy Fanboy & Chum Chum.
- In northern Europe, the first season of Fanboy & Chum Chum has been picked up by SVT (Sweden), with NRK (Norway) taking season 2.
- In China BESTV acquires the first season of the series for inclusion in an HD and non-HD Nickelodeon package deal. Also in China, Wasu has signed a VOD Nickelodeon package deal that includes the first two seasons of Fanboy & Chum Chum.
- In Latin America, Teletica (Costa Rica) and Venevision (Venezuela) both ink Nickelodeon package deals including Fanboy & Chum Chum episodes. TeleDoce (Uruguay) signs on for season 2 of the series, while Band TV (Brazil) takes Fanboy & Chum Chum the first two seasons as part of a package.
Shout! Factory, in collaboration with Hasbro Studios, will release the first season of the CGI animated series Transformers Prime in North America on March 6, 2012 as a deluxe 4-disc DVD set and a Limited Edition 4-disc Blu-ray collection. Both the DVD and Blu-ray collections of Transformers Prime: The Complete First Season will include all 26 episodes of the season, including the 5-part miniseries Darkness Rising, as well as bonus content. For a limited time, the Blu-ray release will include a 96-page IDW graphic novel based on this Transformers Prime series.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
