Cynopsis: DIGITAL
02/03/12

Good morning. It’s Friday, February 3, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.

97.9 million people in the U.S. owned a smartphone in the fourth quarter of 2011, according to the latest numbers from comScore‘s MobiLens service. The number represents 40% of all mobile subscribers. Google’s Android ranked as the top smartphone operating system with a 47.3% market share, up 2.5% from the market share it held in the previous quarter. Apple’s iOS remained at number two in the 4Q of 2011 with a 29.6% share, up from 27.4% in the 3Q. RIM, which came in third, experienced a drop in market share, from 18.9% in the 3Q of 2011 to 16.0% in the 4Q. Rounding out the top five, Microsoft and Symbian also saw their market shares drop 0.9% and 0.4%, respectively. The MobiLens service also measured mobile content usage in the 4Q of 2011, it found:

  • 47.6% (+5.1% from 3Q) of mobile subscribers used downloaded apps.
  • 47.5% (+4.6%) used a browser on their mobile phones.
  • 35.3% (+3.8%) accessed a social networking site or blog.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Throughout February, digital cable subscribers can access a wide array of programming geared toward learning about the history and culture of African Americans via cable’s Diversity on Demand initiative. The types of content available range from historical perspectives on the struggles and triumphs of African Americans in the U.S., to entertainment programming featuring prominent African Americans like Will Smith, Chris Rock and Jamie Foxx. In addition, individuals who “like” the official Diversity on Demand Facebook page will receive Black History programming updates, links to trailers and alerts to various entertainment and blogger giveaways during the promotion. The Facebook page will serve as a hub for anyone interested in the initiative’s multicultural content, and will play host to conversations, contests, polls, trivia, trailers and more throughout the program. Launched this month in honor of Black History Month, the initiative will continue to provide an extensive collection of multicultural programming on-demand until end of Hispanic Heritage Month, on October 15.

Paul, the Male Matchmaker, a new original web series from Warner Bros. Television Group’s digital arm, Studio 2.0, will debut exclusively on Hulu on February 13. The 10-episode comedy series is about a male matchmaker who tries to help women find a significant other, even though he himself is very socially inept and naive. The series is shot in a mockumentary style and stars actor/writer Paul Bartholomew (Mad Men; Yes, Dear), and will feature guest appearances from the likes of Janeane Garofolo, Lisa Edelstein and Tony Hale, as well as Patti Stringer from The Millionaire Matchmaker. The series is created by Bartholomew and Liz Tuccillo (He’s Just Not That Into You, How to Be Single) and is produced by Generate in conjunction with Studio 2.0.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Think TeleVisual Network is a new, yet-to-be-launched multiplatform offering that seeks to deliver “one, unified televisual news experience” across any device or platform. A joint venture between Steven Saslow, former CEO of Verance Corporation, Lee Adams, former CIO of The Tribune Company and Brandon Davis, Think would be a 24/7 digital news network. Set to launch in 2012, the network is currently going through a second-round of fundraising in collaboration with Boston-based investment banking firm, Kaufman & Company. Think is also developing its distribution model in conjunction with the cable television industry, and will be co-marketed to cable operators as an expanded, free digital service for subscribers.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Mojiva has announced that it is the first mobile ad network to reach more than one billion unique devices globally per month. In the U.S. alone, it reaches 224 million unique mobile devices each month. In the U.K., Germany, France, Spain and Italy, Mojiva’s ad network serves mobile ads to 33 million, 10.6 million, 5.5 million, 6.4 million and 8.7 million devices, respectively. Other findings from its report include: Mojiva works with over 8,000 mobile publishers and apps for ad monetization, and serves more than 45 million ad requests in 190 countries. The company attributes its growth to rising use of smartphones and tablets globally, as well as advertisers expanding their campaigns to include mobile platforms.

OneFeat is a social gaming app where users complete missions by uploading photos from any location. For the first time, OneFeat is partnering with an entertainment property: The Woman in Black, starring Daniel Radcliffe. Themed missions inspired by the movie, which is out today, include tasks like “make a scared face”, “summon spirits” and “find a haunted house.” Users can find the missions on the OneFeat app for iPhone, iPad and Android; as well as the OneFeat tab on the Facebook page for The Woman in Black. Those who complete the missions earn points, as well as be in the running to win various The Woman in Black-themed prizes, including signed posters and the grand prize of a trip for two to New Orleans.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Netflix has signed a deal with California-based start-up EyeIO, a video encoding firm that will license its technology to help Netflix minimize its bandwidth consumption by 20 to 50 percent, without damaging video quality. The companies haven’t announced where and in what capacity Netflix uses EyeIO’s technology to cut down on the bandwidth of its video streams. Netflix is EyeIO’s first announced client. EyeIO was founded by Charles Steinberg, a former Sony executive; Robert C. Hagerty, a former CEO of Polycom; and Rodolfo Vargas, formerly a senior program manager of video at Microsoft.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

According to a statement from Richard Greenfield, an analyst at BTIG Research, the disparity between the average amount of time every day a person views content on YouTube (eight minutes) and watching TV (over five hours) is set to diminish. He cites several factors for this outlook, including improved bandwidth wired/wireless, the rise of internet-connected TVs and an increased focus on web video from content creators. Furthermore, Greenfield references YouTube’s original programming initiative, as well as the possibility of it enabling subscription-based offerings (which Salar Kamangar, the head of YouTube, mentioned in his interview at the D: Dive into Media conference) as other reasons for the healthy prognosis.

A new Harris Interactive survey, commissioned by mobile marketing technology provider Velti, finds that nearly 60% of mobile phone users who also plan to watch this year’s Super Bowl will look at or use their mobile device during the game. 83% of viewers who plan to use their mobile phones expect to access their device more than they did during last year’s Super Bowl. 30% of viewers under the age of 45 will watch the game with their device in hand, and 47% of viewers over the age of 18 say they expect to use their mobile device up to 10 times during the game. However, that doesn’t mean they won’t be watching the game. The survey also found that only 13% of viewers who plan to use their mobile device will do so during game play. In comparison, 26% say they are likely to use their phones during commercial breaks.

A+E Networks reports a record-setting month in terms of web traffic this past January across its web properties. A+E’s domains attracted 20+ million unique visitors, which is a 54% spike from the previous January. Three A+E websites also set individual records for January 2012: History.com received 6+ million unique visitors (up 48% over the previous January); Biography.com received 5+ million (+148%); and Aetv.com attracted 2.7 million (+24%).

The 2011 State of Gaming Review from Spil Games takes a look at user behavior across the Dutch company’s online gaming platform, which attracts more than 170 million monthly unique visitors. According to the data in the report, players spend an average of 85 minutes per month playing online games. Furthermore, players who use free-to-play social gaming sites still spend as much as $60 per month on micro-transactions. When looking at online gaming by country, the U.S. and Brazil boast the most online gamers. Spil Games, which itself saw 11 billion plays in 2011 across its platforms, also found that four of the top five games for women were social or featured a social element.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Lionsgate and Funtactix, a global developer and publisher of social games, have announced The Hunger Games Adventures gaming app for Facebook, which will launch alongside the release of the highly-anticipated film on March 23, 2012. The game will enable users to explore the world of Panem, the setting of the popular novel and movie, and complete missions in order to advance their own narrative. The map of the world will expand with each successive mission. Funtactix has previously developed social companion games for other well-known entertainment properties like Mission Impossible and Rango.

Google remotely scans Android Market apps for malicious software via a technology it calls “Bouncer.” The technology also tests every new application on Google’s cloud infrastructure to see how it will run on a device, and then flags it accordingly. In fact, if Google learns of a new type of malware, spyware or trojan, it will go back and rescan every app in the Android Market and remotely wipe any affected devices of the malicious app(s).
