Cynopsis: Kids!

02/26/10

Good morning. It’s Friday, February 26, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Author John Grisham is writing a new young adult book series based around Theodore Boone, a 13-year-old amateur lawyer.  Publishers Hodder & Stoughton and Penguin Young Readers Group have acquired the first two books in series for the UK and US respectively.  In the first book in the series, Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer, the unlikely kid hero finds himself tangled in his town’s first murder trial.  This first novel is slated for release this year by Dutton Children’s Books, which is part of Penguin, on May 25 in the US and by Hodder, a division of Hachette UK, on June 10 in the UK.  The second book in the series will be published in 2011.

Canada’s TV Group is launching YOOPA, a new multiplatform French-language preschoolers and their parents brand this spring, per KidScreen.  Specifically aimed at families in Quebec, YOOPA will include a digital TV channel and magazine, both schedule for an April 1, 2010 launch, as well as a website to bow in May.  The TV channel will initially feature programming from 6a-10p, eventually becoming a 24/7 channel.  Original programming a part of the plan, with a new live-action/puppet series currently in production and slated to bow in June and a second series planned for this fall.  In the meantime the channel will launch with acquired programming including Angelina Ballerina, Waybuloo, Blue’s Clues, LazyTown and Pororo.  The website will mesh together existing kid and parent sites PetitMonde.ca and EspaceParents.ca.  TV Group is a unit of Quebecor Media.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Nicolas Cage and Ryan Reynolds are set to star in DreamWorks Animation SKG‘s new pre-historic themed 3D CG animated movie The Croods.  Slated for a March 30, 2012 release, the move revolves around a caveman named Grug (Cage) who is the leader of a family forced to find a new home following an earthquake and the compelling nomadic stranger (Reynolds) they meet on their journey.  The nomad’s ideas challenge Grug’s and his authority and traditions, particularly when the caveman’s daughter is drawn to the imaginative stranger.  The Croods is written/directed by Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon) and Kirk DeMicco (Space Chimps) and is based on a screenplay originally developed by John Cleese and DeMicco and produced by Kristine Belson & Jane Hartwell.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor, actors and real life husband and wife team, will guest star in a new episode of the animated series Phineas and Ferb, debuting Monday, March 8 at 8p on DXD.  The episode will also air on Disney Channel on March 12 at 9p.  In the episode Stiller plays a super villain that goes up against Phineas and Ferb, and Taylor his nagging wife.

Rihanna and Justin Bieber sign on to perform on Nickelodeon’s 23rd Annual Kids’ Choice Awards, live from UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion in LA on Saturday, March 27, 8-9:30p.  Nick will also launch its All Access Sweepstakes with Justin Bieber.  For one week, March 3-10, kids can log onto www.nick.com/kca10 from to register the sweepstakes, including a trip to LA to see the show and attend Bieber’s rehearsal among other treats.  Additionally, on March 27, the day of the show, Nick.com will provide kids with an insider’s look at the whole Kids’ Choice Awards event, including watching celebrities walk the Orange carpet, webcams in the control room and interactive polls, updates and celebrity tweets.  The webcams can also be accessed via the KCA 2010 iPhone app.  Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards will be simulcast on FLO TV’s mobile streaming service, and will be available on VOD from March 28.  KCA clips and shorts will also be available on Nickelodeon’s mobile VOD and online syndication partners.

Funimation Entertainment acquires the US distribution rights to Dragon Ball Z Kai, the latest chapter in the Dragon Ball anime franchise, from Toei Animation Co.  Under the multi-year deal, Funimation will release Dragon Ball Z Kai on DVD and Blu-ray beginning this spring, beginning with part One on May 18, 2010.  The US release of this series features updated opening and closing sequences as well as renewed soundtracks and re-recording of the series with key members of the original voiceover cast.  Dragon Ball Kai made its original debut on Japan’s Fuji Television Network in April 2009.  Funimation is a division of Navarre Corporation.

In the UK Five’s Milkshake! will launch its newly redesigned preschool-centric website next week.  In addition to a new look, the Milkshake! site will feature less text and more images and offer a point and click process with icons, character pictures and host branded areas to make navigation easier for younger kids, as well as offering a range of activities, downloads, games and printables.  Additionally, the site will be home to the new re-branded Milkshake! area of Demand Five, All Day Milkshake!, where kids can view shows on demand.  Five’s in-house Digital Media Group and the Milkshake programming team produced the new site.  Bionic Communications created the design and flash aspects of the site and it was developed and built by Unboxed Consulting.

Steve O’Pray, former CEO/PPC Ltd, and Mark Hurry, Legal and Commercial Director/PPC Enterprises, have acquired PPC Enterprises from its group company and re-branded and launched its as the new licensing agency Space Enterprises Ltd.  O’Pray and Hurry will retain the group’s portfolio of brands, including Monty Python, Pinky and Perky, Little Britain, and the new preschool property The Hive.  The new company will be based in London’s Soho, and will continue to work closely with the production studio and design teams at PPC.
