Good morning. It’s Friday, February 24, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

In China, You On Demand, a Pay-Per-View and Video On Demand (VOD) provider, enters into a deal with Disney Media Distribution for VOD throughout the People’s Republic of China. Under the deal Disney Media Distribution will distribute Disney films for both Transactional Video On Demand (TVOD) and Subscription Video On Demand (SVOD) throughout China. Disney new and classic movie titles featured in the deal includes kid/family titles such as The Muppets, Cars 2, The Lion King, Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast, as well as War Horse and The Help.

Viacom International Media Networks Asia announces the launch of Nick Jr. in Thailand via GMM Grammy this week. Nick Jr. is a 24-hour, commercial-free, English educational preschool channel that can be found on GMM Grammy’s new 1-Sky broadcasting platform, which offers free Satellite TV and Pay TV services with 200+ channels. Nick Jr. is the first kid’s channel to debut on 1-Sky’s broadcasting platform and is available to 1-Sky’s Entertainment package and Combo package subscribers. The launch in Thailand further expands Nick Jr. in across Asia, following its launches last year in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Mongolia.

Kenn Viselman Presents… Will release its interactive feature film The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure in movie theaters on August 29, 2012, just ahead of the long Labor Day holiday weekend. The movie will be distributed in the US by the newly established distribution arm of Kenn Viselman Presents… The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure features Toni Braxton, Cloris Leachman, Christopher Lloyd, Chazz Palminteri, Cary Elwes and Jaime Pressly with Kenn Viselman as producer. Directed by Matthew Diamond (So You Think You Can Dance, Great Performances, Camp Rock, That’s So Raven, among others), the screenplay for the movie was penned by Scott Stabile, who also wrote lyrics for original songs for the movie with Joshua Gronner (music). The movie follows the Oogieloves characters that are planning a surprise birthday party for a friend when they lose the last five magical balloons. During their adventure to get the balloons back in time for the party, the gang meets lots of interesting characters, all played by the various celebrities in the cast, who help them in their quest. Kenn Viselman is known to many as the marketing brain behind both Thomas the Tank Engine and Teletubbies.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Astral’s Family Channel (Canada) orders up the new tween drama series The Next Step (26×30) from Temple Street Productions. Created by Frank van Keeken (Wingin’ It, The Kids in the Hall), The Next Step is set to begin filming this summer 2012. The Next Step follows the lives of a group of a tightly knit team of elite dancers who train, rehearse and hang out together, all within a an established social order that sees star dancer Emily and her followers, the E-Girls, running the dance studio. When a talented new girl Michelle joins, the social balance of the studio is altered and secrets and emotions are revealed. The team needs to figure out how they are going to work together if they stand a chance at winning the national title. In addition to the series, Family Channel is also investing in the creation of series-related content specifically for Family.ca, some of which might include behind-the-scenes footage, character confessional type pieces, and an “after show” web series featuring character interviews and storyline discussions.

MARKETING

Zinkia Entertainment‘s popular character Pocoyo will continue to serve as the Global Kids’ Ambassador for World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour initiative for a second year. Pocoyo will support the Earth Hour 2012 I Will If You Will (www.youtube.com/earthhour) campaign by participating in his own challenge and thus getting the word out to kids around the world. For Pocoyo’s challenge, Zinkia pledges to plant up to 10,000 trees- one tree for every person who goes online to play Pocoyo’s Recycling Game, which launches this week at EarthHour.org (www.earthhour.org) and the Pocoyo Facebook page (www.facebook.com/pocoyo). Zinkia Co-Founder/Chairman has also now personally pledged to similarly plant up to 10,000 trees when equal the number of people visit the sites and play the game. The trees will be planted by Trees for the Future, which has a mission to plant 17 million trees worldwide in 2012. To promote Pocoyo’s initiative, a new Public Service Announcement featuring Pocoyo is available for on-air broadcast and online across websites and social media platforms. There will also be special Pocoyo Earth Hour activity booklets available for printing and distribution as well as Pocoyo Earth Hour screensavers and wallpapers. Earth Hour 2012’s I Will If You Will campaign aims to show how everyone has the power to change the world. Earth Hour 2012 takes place Saturday, March 31, 8:30-9:30p (local time) during which time individuals, businesses and governments are invited to turn out their lights for one hour to support the environment.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Ty Burrell (Modern Family) will make a guest star appearance on the debut episode of Disney Junior‘s animated series Doc McStuffins.  The new series premieres Friday, March 23 on Disney Junior block on Disney Channel (10-11a) and on the new 24-hour Disney Junior channel (4-5p). Doc McStuffins revolves around a young girl named Doc who can talk to stuff animals and toys and cares for them teaching/showing them about health, hygiene and nurturing  and generally taking care of oneself. Each story features an original song. Burrell lends his voice to Big Jack, a nurturing Jack-in-the-Box, who takes his son Little Jack to see Doc in the premiere episode. Disney’s promotional campaign for the new Doc McStuffins series begins with an 11-minute preview episode, which will be available for download on iTunes on Monday, March 12. A full-length preview will be available on Disney Channel on Demand (SVOD) on Friday, March 16. A sneak peek will also be presented Saturday, March 17 and Sunday, March 18 (8:45a) during the Disney Junior block on Disney Channel and in primetime, Monday, March 19 (8p). The series TV premiere of Doc McStuffins on Friday, March 23 will be simulcast on Disney Channel’s mobile providers Sprint TV and MobiTV and be available immediately after on DisneyJunior.com (www.disneyjunior.com) and Disney Channel mobile VOD. The full episodes will also be available on iTunes and Xbox Live from Saturday, March 24.

Bejuba Entertainment competes new sales for the preschool series Stella and Sam (13×30, 26×11), which is based on the Stella and Sam books by Marie-Louise Gay. Stella and Sam, which delivers this month, has been newly acquired by Canal + (France), NRK (Norway), RUV (Iceland), and Estonian Public Broadcasting. Ordered by Disney Junior Canada, Stella and Sam is produced by Radical Sheep Productions in Canada. zincRoe has created the interactive components for the series. The series has already been by a number of channels around the world including YLE, HOP, Disney Australia, PakaPaka Argentina, and TFO.

Nickelodeon‘s new SpongeBob SquarePants app, SpongeBob’s Super Bouncy Fun Time, is now live and available for iOS devices. Jellyfish migration has resulted in jellyfish everywhere, so players must help SpongeBob and his best buddy Patrick collect them all using a special ball buster in this adventure. The app features Tom Kenney as the voice of SpongeBob, 100 levels, and there are 15 power-ups available for players to customize their ball blasters. Players can also explore the Bikini Bottom, travel to five exotic locations incluidng Jellyfish Fields, Kelp Forst, and Rock Bottom.

In London, publisher Ladybird Books, part of the Penguin Book Group, releases the Story Time app, the first in a collection of free apps based on the noted The Land of Me series, for iPad2. Targeted to K2-6, the new Story Time app is designed by child development experts to help young kids explore their creativity. The storytelling app invites users to create their own stories by selecting a hero, theme and ending, and watch the story come to life. Users can also change words to see how it will alter the storyline as it plays out in front of them. Additionally, kids can read on-screen hints offering a range of ideas to discuss and things to do.

Kidz Bop and StarMaker Interactive, a developer of music-based mobile and social games, partner to launch the Kidz Bop Karaoke app for iPhone, iTouch and iPad this week. The interactive app allows kids to sing and record personalized versions of Kidz Bop songs and share their recording on KidzBop.com (www.kidzbop.com). The new app is free to download, and offers one free song, scrolling lyrics, voice effects and processing, and customizable album covers. There are 47 Kidz Bop songs available for use with the app ($0.99 per song). Users can make and save an unlimited number of recordings with downloaded songs. All recordings made using Kidz Bop Karaoke app that are shared to KidzBop.com are pre-screened and moderated before they are published to the website.

Kristy Scanlan is named VP/Business Development for Technicolor Digital Productions’ Animation group. Scanlan is charged with growing the company’s animation production services, developing business strategies, and coordinating marketing initiatives. Among her initial priorities, Scanlan will oversee the expansion of Technicolor’s animation services business for video game and advertising clients. Scanlan will report to Robert Winthrop, head of Animation. Most recently, Scanlan was head of production, Threshold Entertainment, where she produced CG animated feature-length films including Bionicle: The Legend Reborn and Lego: The Adventures of Clutch Powers. Previously, she held similar positions with director Steve Miner (Halloween H2O, Dawson’s Creek), as well as producers Bobby Newmyer/Outlaw Productions (The Santa Clause, Training Day) and Gale Anne Hurd/Valhalla Motion Pictures (Terminator, Armageddon).
