Cynopsis: DIGITAL
02/24/12
Good morning. It’s Friday, February 24, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.
The Obama Administration is calling on Congress to pass a web “privacy bill of rights” that will give consumers more control over the personal information that is collected about them. The “bill of rights” will feature seven principles designed to protect digital privacy, including an opt-out feature and the requirement that companies must provide easily digestible information in regards to their privacy practices. In similar news, numerous web companies, including Google, have chosen to include an embedded “do not track” button on their web browsers. The new button will not stop all web-based tracking, reports The Wall Street Journal. For example, the data can still be used for research and product development purposes, as well as be accessed by the authorities. The button also won’t prevent companies from gathering data based on user actions, such as a user “liking” something on Facebook. However, the button will block companies from tracking users in order to build customizable ads and using data for employment, credit, healthcare or insurance purposes. A feature similar to this is already available on Firefox and Internet Explorer, with Apple set to include it in its upcoming Mountain Lion offering and Google Chrome set to implement it by the end of the year, according to the report.
Google has requested permission from federal regulators to introduce a pay-TV service in Kansas City. The market, which includes the two separate cities in Missouri and Kansas, is currently dominated by Time Warner Cable. The offering will include both pay-TV and internet using the Google Fiber internet service that the company has been building in the area. Google Fiber will offer free broadband web access to schools and paid services for consumers at reportedly high speeds. It is expected to be launched in the first half of 2012. According to analysts from Bernstein Research, if approved, Google might offer additive cloud-based television and DVR services for all or many of the content and channels it would provide through this new pay-TV and internet package. The application for a video franchise license was first reported by the New York Post.
Trendrr.TV and KABC-TV are teaming up to spotlight the top 20 most talked about topics during the station’s live coverage of the Oscars’ red carpet this Sunday night. In a series of live segments, titled “Red Hot Right Now,” on-air correspondents will tap Trendrr’s real-time social media processing and conversation curation capabilities in order to cover the buzz surrounding the Academy Awards. If you’re going to be away from the television set, you can access a live-stream of the “pregame show” at OnTheRedCarpet.com, as well as keep track of the Trendrr leaderboard while you watch.
Swoop, a new start-up that integrates relevant information about products and services (at times, it says in the form of advertising or sponsored content) with web content, has officially launched with its first service: Swoop Local Offers for food. Here’s how it works: A consumer reviewing a recipe on a website integrated with the offering will have the option to click on a piece of content on the recipe page (such as the text), after which an interactive overlay will pop up displaying content and offers (for nearby stores). The service is meant to eliminate the need for the consumer having to go search for deals on their own, which means he or she will not be leaving the site. While this is good news for web publishers, Swoop also benefits advertisers, according to Swoop CEO Ron Elwell. “This increases user engagement with the site and presents an opportunity for advertisers to provide relevant and timely offers and information,” said Elwell.
Yieldbot, a start-up that aims to help web publishers sell their display ad inventory to search advertisers, has raised $4.2 million in a Series A round of funding, led by New Atlantic Ventures and RRE Ventures, with additional financing coming from seed investors. The funds will be used to continue development and bring to market Yieldbot for Publishers real-time “intent-graph” technology and Yieldbot for Advertisers real-time intent marketplace.
Luminate, a start-up that makes digital images interactive, has unveiled an “Image App Store,” which has been created to be a hub for publishers to browse and choose the specific image apps they want to use for their sites. The company has also released eleven new image apps designed for “interacting with trillions of images across the web.” In conjunction with all of this, the start-up has secured a $10.7 million Series C round of funding, led by Nokia Growth Partners with additional contributions from existing investors.
Experian, Facebook’s first launch partner when it released APIs for ads, has enhanced its Alchemy ad platform to be compatible with Facebook Timeline and Sponsored Stories, according to TechCrunch. The company has already transitioned its existing client base, which includes about 200 international brands and agencies, to the new platform, dubbed Alchemy 2. Experian is also making it available for new clients. The company says Alchemy 2 enables clients to create thousands of customized ads within 30 minutes and provides access to real-time feedback on ad performance from Facebook users. And that’s not all; clients can alter their budgets based on how well a campaign is doing on new features on the social network.
TubeMogul’s media buying platform for video advertising has received certification from the Network Advertising Initiative (NAI). Similar to other digital privacy programs, the NAI offers consumers more control over their online information via an opt-out feature. The coalition of over 80 online advertising companies also provides protection from invasive forms of tracking (the NAI only allows browser-based cookies), regulations on how audience data can be used and a ban on the collection of any personally-identifiable data. TubeMogul says the certification is just the latest example of its continuous drive to ensure consumer privacy. The company already offers a global opt-out feature, which launched before its media buying platform for video ads; places the TRUSTe AdChoices icon on all video ads targeted using third-party audience data; and has been certified by multiple IAB guidelines and standards in digital video.
LiveIntent, the provider of a real-time display ad platform for email, has announced an “alliance program” for email service providers (ESPs) called LiveCertified. The program is designed to help ESPs offer their clients an easy way to include real-time display ads in their emails without requiring add-ons; and is meant to help publishers offset the cost of sending emails to customers. The program also keeps partners updated on the latest trends in email ad serving and revenue generation technology available through LiveIntent.
International broadcaster CBS Chello Zone UK Channels has launched an interactive puzzle-based game as part of its marketing campaign around CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. The jigsaw puzzle, hosted on the channel’s website, is made up of 500,080 pieces. To unveil pieces, viewers have to either redeem a five-digit code that will air during the nightly broadcast of the show (on CBS Drama at 9pm), or invite friends to play the game through Facebook. Some hidden pieces come with prizes. The final image, which will be revealed once all pieces are flipped, is a piece of evidence from the show. Players who correctly guess the image will be entered to win a grand prize. The puzzle game is another element of CBS Chello Zone UK Channels’ ongoing efforts to build viewer engagement through social media platforms.
Here’s some more privacy-related news affecting the tech world: six major companies (Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, RIM and HP) have signed agreements stating that they will inform users about private data collected by apps on their platforms, before users make the decision to download the app. The decision binds both the companies and the developers on their respective platforms. The six companies are scheduled to meet with the attorney general of California, where the agreement was signed, to report on how well developers are complying with the new rules.
Nielsen and NM Incite have released their first ever U.S. Digital Consumer Report, which takes a look at what Nielsen refers to as Generation C, 18-34 year old Americans, who the report finds are more connected than any other age group. This age group accounts for 27% of consumers who watch online video, 27% of consumers visit social network/blog sites, 33% of those who own tablets and 39% of smartphone owners. The report notes how it makes this demographic one of great interest for marketers and content providers. Other findings from the report include:
- There are as many mobile web users today as there were regular internet users in 2000.
- 64% of mobile time is spent on apps.
eMarketer estimates that Facebook ad revenues will grow more than 60% in 2012 to the amount of $5.06 billion worldwide, a slight fall from the 68.2% ad revenue growth the social network witnessed in 2011. The slide in ad revenue growth is expected to continue in the coming years, with eMarketer expecting Facebook to hit worldwide ad revenues of nearly $8 billion by 2015. In addition, the forecast sees the U.S. accounting for 51% ($2.58 billion) of worldwide ad revenues, down from 55% in 2011 and expecting to drop to 49% in 2013 and 2014. While Facebook is expected to pull in 6.5% of all online ad revenues in the U.S. in 2012 (up from 5.4% in 2011 and expected to rise to 7.1% in 2013 and 2014), such revenue is still responsible for a vast amount of Facebook’ revenue stream; by the end of 2012, eMarketer expects 83% of the social network’s global revenues to come courtesy of ads.
Umami TV has unveiled two enhancements to its free social TV app for the iPad. FreezeFrame allows users to instantly capture images from the shows that they are watching and share them on Facebook and Twitter, something the company likens to “Pinterest for the social TV space.” Dishboard is a dashboard that covers conversations surrounding a TV show, providing infographics that are updated in real-time, as well as identifying popular links and tweets that are being shared around that program. Launched in November, Umami utilizes audio fingerprinting technology to sync with live or time-shifted programming from all major broadcast and cable networks, after which it delivers rich, show-related content and conversations to the user.
Scott Barton has been promoted by Starz Entertainment to the role of Vice President, Digital and On-Demand Programming. In his new role, Barton will be responsible for the programming, promotion and product development of Starz Entertainment’s advanced services platforms, including its on-demand and online services. He will be based out of Starz headquarters in Englewood, Colorado.
Twitter has nabbed two Google executives to lead its expansion into international advertising. Shailesh Rao will be Vice President of International Revenue, where he will oversee sales operations in overseas markets that Twitter deems are ready for monetization. Stephen McIntyre has been appointed by Twitter as Director of Online Sales and Operations. He will be responsible for its new international self-serve advertising offering. Rao will work out of Twitter’s San Francisco office beginning in April, while McIntyre will be based out of Dublin, Ireland. Both men will report to Adam Bain, president of global revenue at the company.
A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE
“This is my favorite publication. Honestly, I don’t find it necessary to read too many others because I know I can find what I need in Cynopsis!”

Reach our extraordinary readers by contacting Mike Farina, VP of Business Development and Sales.
I know it’s the Academy Awards this Sunday night, but I feel confident in that I’ve covered the websites and apps you should be mindful of as you plop down and enjoy the ceremony. Therefore, we move on to the other great thing happening right now: The return of our national pastime from the dark cave of winter. And with it comes a very cool website: Every Hall of Famer. An artist named Summer Anne Burton has been drawing a portrait of every member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in chronological order and then publishing it on the site (My favorite: Charles “Old Hoss” Radbourn). It is absolutely wonderful, so give it a look as we inch closer and closer to Opening Day.
