Apple and Google seem to have a new competitor in the battle to secure streaming rights for TV episodes in Netflix, according a report in the NYPost. The company, which has long offered past episodes of TV shows online and via DVD, is offering studios between $70k-$100k per episode for the right to stream current episodes to subscribers. Netflix has already struck a deal with NBC Universal last month for the rights to stream Saturday Night Live the day after it airs on the network.

MTV and Panache have teamed to launch a new premium ad format with “fast-forward” capabilities, allowing consumers to forward through an ad while still displaying a branded presence. The idea is to provide a format for repurposing TV creative suitable for impatient online viewers. The HTML5-based format, compatible with the iPad, has been running in a Samsung campaign on Comedy Central, accruing some 1.5 million views and a completion rate of 89% to date, according to Panache.

Settling an eventful feud with John Malone, media mogul Barry Diller has officially stepped down as of IAC/Interactive Corp as Liberty Media announced its sale of its $220 million share in IAC to the company. Google TV‘s software is going to have to get a lot more snazzy if the platform is ever going to make an impact on the marketplace. (People aren’t going to buy it to watch TV shows.) The company has now added a new channel creation feature to the YouTube LeanBack interface, enabling users to build their own “channels” based on their own interests. Click on the “create channels” button to pull up a menu of recommended videos based on what you’ve already watched or build one from scratch by entering a search term. Channels you create get added to the line-up of pre-preprogrammed channels and become better (and more complexly) defined the more videos you watch.
