Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, December 2, 2011, and this your first early morning briefing.

Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products and Stage Entertainment Touring Productions unveil plans to launch of Ice Age Live! A Mammoth Adventure, a new original five-year live worldwide tour, which is set to premiere in early November 2012 at Wembley Arena in London.  Featuring a new Ice Age story, Ice Age Live features a combination of ice skating, aerial arts, puppetry and film.  Produced through Stage Entertainment Touring Productions, Ice Age Live! A Mammoth Adventure will be directed by Guy Caron, a creative behind Cirque du Soleil productions such as Ka and Dralion.  The live show will feature a story, music and lyrics by Ella Louise Allaire and Martin Lord Ferguson (Cirque du Soleil, Holiday on Ice and APM Music).  Costume design will be headed by Michael Curry (Cirque du Soleil, Walt Disney, Olympics).

LICENSING

CBS Consumer Products has joined forces with TeamFanShop, an e-commerce solutions company, to launch a new online store for Television City.  ShopTVCity.com launches this week and offers products inspired by a range of popular TV series, including retro t-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies featuring series catchphrases such as “I Make Cool Look Easy” from Happy Days. Merchandised offered on the site represents series including 7th Heaven, Andy Griffith Show, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Brady Bunch, Cheers, Beverly Hills 90210, Charmed, Dynasty, Ghost Whisperer, Gomer Pyle, Gunsmoke, Happy Days, Hogan’s Heroes, Jericho, Laverne & Shirley, Little Rascals, Love Boat, Medium, Melrose Place, Mighty Mouse, Mod Squad, Mork and Mindy, Taxi, Touched by an Angel and Twilight Zone.

And poof… The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will come to Universal Studios Hollywood, per the LA TimesWarner Bros., which of course produced the Potter movies, and Universal Studios is looking to open the theme park attraction in LA at the earliest in 2015.  Warner Bros. and Universal opened the initial Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando in June 2010.  The report points out that in order to it is unclear where the new Potter attraction will go at the land-challenged LA theme park, speculating that other rides/attractions would need to be altered or removed in order to make room.

Team 17 and AT New Media announce the launch of the first lines of Worms branded products, based on the eponymous video game, at retail across Europe.  AT New Media is the licensing agent for Team 17’s Worms merchandise.  The Worms licensees and products include: Gaya debuts a plush line featuring sound chips and based on the Super Sheep; GB Posters releases Worms full color posters.  The Worms video game was originally released in 1995 and continues to be popular with versions across multiple platforms including mobile phones, Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and Steam for PC.  Further product lines are in development and set to debut in 2012, including a line of collectible plushes and keyrings from IGS (GameOn), as well as apparel, squeezies, mugs, figurines and collectibles.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon will premiere its new holiday-themed episode of Victorious, A Christmas Tori, this Saturday, December 3 at 8p.  The episode features a cast musical performance of the new song It’s Not Christmas Without You, which will be available on iTunes from Saturday.  The episode will be followed by the holiday-themed Big Time Rush special, Big Time Christmas at 8:30-9:30p, and iCarly iChristmas at 9:30p.

Disney Channel will premiere Frenemies, its new live-action TV movie, on Friday, January 13 at 8p.  Frenemies revolves around three very different groups of friends as they deal with the daily ups and downs of friendship.  The movie stars Bella Thorne and Zendaya (both from Shake It Up), Stefanie Scott (A.N.T. Farm), Nick Robinson (Melissa and Joey), and Mary Mouser (Body of Proof).  Filmed on location in Toronto, Canada, Frenemies is a production of Alloy Entertainment and Coin Flip Productions.  Disney Channel will support the movie across multiple platforms including:

  • From Friday, December 15, DisneyChannel.com will feature the characters from Frenemies and will launch a new three-part mini-game that showcase the different storylines in the TV movie.
  • Friday, January 6  Frenemies will get an exclusive preview via Disney Channel On Demand (available to customers of affiliates including AT&T U-Verse, Cablevision, Time Warner and Verizon FiOS TV).
  • Tuesday, January 17  the movie will be available on iTunes and Xbox Live.

V&S Entertainment inks further TV deals for its HD CGI animated preschool series Everything’s Rosie, currently in its third season (for a total of 78×11).  Italian digital kids’ channel DeAKids acquires the first season of Everything’s Rosie and will air the series weekdays at 6:30p beginning in January 2012.  Picking up the second season of the series is Switzerland’s Italian-language network RTSI.  Additionally, Everything’s Rosie is set to makes its debut in Asia with Vietnam’s TK-L Media Corporation acquiring the first season to air on free terrestrial channel HTV in 2012 and PBS picking up season one for Thailand.  The series is produced and distributed by V&S Entertainment.

Beyond Distribution completes a deal for the preschool series Tati’s Hotel (26×15) with Disney Junior Australia and New Zealand.  The series will debut in Australia in February 2012.  Commissioned by CITV UK and TV Ontario, Tati’s Hotel is produced by Machines Productions and Screen Door.  The series revolves around Tati, an 8-year-old girl who runs a magical hotel, her staff (handyman, bellhop, and concierge) and the guests that visit from across the universe.

Spain’s BRB Internacional teams with another social networking site Tuenti, also based in Spain, to offer several of it animated series.  BRB series available on Tuenti’s 12 million registered users include Berni, The Imp, Iron Kid, David the Gnome and D’Artacan and the Three Muskethounds.

MGM taps Todd Berger (The Happytime Murders) to pen the screenplay for its adaptation of Where’s Waldo?, per THR.  This is the third attempt to bring creator/illustrator Martin Handford’s Where’s Waldo to the big screen.  Previously, Paramount/Nickelodeon and Illumination Entertainment took the project for a spin.

Stan Lee serves as the narrator of the new Spider-Man storybook app, The Amazing Spider-Man: An Origin Story, from Disney Publishing‘s Marvel Origins storybook series.  Targeted to young readers, The Amazing Spider-Man: An Origin Story app ($6.99) is available now in English for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.  The new storybook app features interactive artwork, sound effects, music, and story-based activities, and in addition to a narrated “Read to Me” mode, the app offers three other reading modes, catering to various different reading levels.  Additionally, kids also get some drawing practice through exercises that help Spidery get his gear on and hunt for secret “No-Prizes” within the app.  The Amazing Spider-Man: An Origin Story app will roll out in other languages as the game is localized across Europe and Asia.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

UK-based PR firms DDA Public Relations and Blueprint Public Relations team to launch a new joint venture, DDA Blueprint.  DDA Blueprint, which is owned 50/50 by the two companies, will be headed up by Blueprint PR’s Co-Directors Janet Balmforth and Aimee Norman, with DDA PR’s CEO Lawrence Atkinson and COO John Stannard serving as Non-Executive Directors. The four principals will form the board of the new company.  The new joint venture will see all Blueprint PR’s current and future business run through DDA Blueprint, which will be based at DDA PR’s headquarters in London.  DDA Blueprint will have access to DDA PR’s reach in the US through its offices in LA, while Blueprint PR brings its extensive TV and theatre expertise to the DDA Group of companies.  DDA Blueprint’s business will primarily be international TV trade and theatre publicity.  Blueprint PR’s theatre head Kate Morley will lead the venture’s theatre efforts.  DDA Blueprint with its unique client base will work alongside and independently of DDA Public Relations, which continues to focus on international and UK-specific motion picture and event-TV campaigns as well as global and local corporate and consumer brand campaigns for its entertainment clients.

Playmates Toys names Jeff Trojan as VP/Boys Brands, marking his return to the company.  Trojan will oversee the creation of integrated marketing programs for a new line of action figures, playsets and accessories based on Nickelodeon’s CG animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which debut on Nickelodeon and NickToons in fall 2012.  Most recently, Trojan was VP/Business Development, DC Comics.  Previously he was VP/Marketing, Play Along, and VP/Boys’ Toys, Playmates Toys.

Nintendo of America‘s General Counsel, SVP Richard Flamm will retire in spring 2012, after 19 years with the company.  Flamm joined the company in 1992 to lead Nintendo’s Litigation team, and shortly thereafter was given oversight of the Anti-Piracy team.  He was upped to General Counsel in 1999.  Prior to Nintendo, Flamm was a partner in the Seattle law firm of Smith & Leary.  Nintendo did not announce any plans for to fill the position.
