The Dept. of Commerce has thrown its hat into the online privacy debate, introducing a new set of principles designed to act as a consumer online privacy “Bill of Rights.” Introduced by Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, the “Fair Information Practice Principles” outline steps to increase transparency, articulate stated purposes for data collection and outline clear commitments for the collection and usage of this data. The guidelines (based on the Federal Privacy Act of 1974), while preliminary, are an attempt to clarify a mishmash of policies and are the clearest indication yet of the Obama administration’s intention to codify online privacy laws. ~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
