Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08/31/12
Good morning. It’s Friday, August 31, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Adobe says Adobe Pass, a component of its Project Primetime TV Everywhere product, is now integrated with over 150 pay-TV providers and supports more than 40 sites and mobile apps from 25 major networks, including FOX, ESPN, CNN, TNT, MTV, Disney, and NBCUniversal. For NBCU, Adobe Pass was used to authenticate the company’s robust TV Everywhere coverage of the most recent Olympics. During the Summer Games, Adobe reports that it authenticated more than 88 million streams to US viewers. Desktop computers accounted for the largest portion of those streams (70%), while smartphones and tablets combined for the rest. Of those 30% of mobile streams, iOS was responsible for 81% and Android for 19%. Overall, Adobe says roughly 7 million TV subscriber households access authenticated streams from about 10 million devices. And maybe even more tellingly, the company says that Adobe Pass saw a ten-fold increase in authenticated video streams in the first six months of 2012.
In addition to these numbers, Adobe also introduced Adobe Pass 2.0 yesterday. The new version features support for auto-authentication for consumers who receive TV and internet service from the same provider. Tested by Comcast and Cablevision during the Olympics, Adobe says the two saw an authentication success rate that was 23% higher than those who didn’t. Other features include a free preview capability and a server-side API, which will be available to programmers this fall.
AwesomenessTV, a YouTube premium channel from the producers of Smallville and One Tree Hill, is premiering its first scripted series today. Runaways is a short-form soap for teens, which will air new episodes every day over the next week. The show is about the mystery surrounding the disappearance of a controversial prep school couple and a police investigation into a murder. “With the addition of Runaways, we’re offering our growing teen and tween audience a broad range of series that are tailored to their tastes, form talk to reality to scripted,” said channel founder Brian Robbins.
Flipboard has added “TV” sections to its Content Guide. These sections, which are available under “Video,” are powered by popular YouTube channels from an array of content providers and cover several different categories, including cooking, music, science, tech/inspiration, news, and fashion. Content providers include the likes of Food Network, Chow.com, TED Talks, Big Think, NPR Music, Pitchfork, Associated Press, ABC News, and more.
Online VOD aggregator and distributor Syndicado has inked a deal with Travesty Productions to add a number of indie titles, including The Mountie, deadend, Edge Codes, and Seeking Salvations, to its library of 300+ documentary and dramatic films and television series. Syndicado’s global digital distribution partners include iTunes, Microsoft, vudu, Google Play, Hulu, and ILoveDocs.com, which Syndicado President Greg Rubidge founded. The company has also secured deals with Renegade Motion Picture Corp. and Buck Productions to bring two TV series, Beyond and Rich Bride Poor Bride, respectively, to Hulu in the US.
Showtime is hosting a September 7 event in New York City at the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum to screen the second-season premiere of its critically acclaimed drama Homeland. Showtime and Time Warner Cable, which is officially presenting the event, plan to live stream the event via NowLive’s interactive video player. This will include interviews with the cast, producers, and other guests, clips from the show, a sneak peek at the season premiere, and a tour of the Space Shuttle Enterprise, which now resides at the aforementioned Museum. The stream will be available on Homeland’s official Facebook page. The series returns to Showtime on September 30 at 10pm ET.
Twitter has launched the Twitter Certified Products Program, which is designed to connect developers who are building products and services for the micro-blogging network with brands that can use such tools to improve engagement with consumers. The Program is split into three product categories, engagement, analytics, and data reseller. Engagement includes services from those like Sprinklr, which helps large companies respond to tweets at scale. Analytics are tools that help measure activity on the site, such as Crimson Hexagon, which Twitter says has helped studios “better understand how conversation on Twitter relates to box office success.” And data resellers are those that make a large number of public tweets available to partners to build products and services. Twitter has launched the program with twelve partners, including the two mentioned above, as well as HootSuite, Mass Relevance, Radian6, and SocialFlow.
This week Twitter also rolled out interest-based targeting for advertisers using Promoted Tweets and Promoted Accounts. The new offering works in two ways. One, advertisers can target users based on more than 350 subjects organized around broader categories (such as different types of genres under the “Movies and Television” category). Two, advertisers can create custom audience segments based on a specific Twitter account. Twitter says these segments would then let advertisers reach users with similar interests to those who follow the Twitter account that was used as a model; however, Twitter will not let brands advertise directly to that account’s followers.
Apple’s $1.5 billion victory over Samsung last week may net another result: A potential truce with Google. According to a report from Reuters, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Larry Page have been talking “about a broad range of intellectual property matters,” including the recent patent clashes related to iOS and the Android operating system. The two had a phone conversation last week, and on top of that several lower-level executives from both tech giants have held ongoing conversations as well. There have been no agreements of any sort of course, but sources told Reuters that “the two companies are keeping the lines of communication open” and that Cook and Page plan to speak again in the coming weeks.

Millennial Media has released its latest Mobile Intel Series report, which takes a look at mobile advertising in the entertainment industry. Among the findings, which come from both a comScore study commissioned by Millennial and the company’s own observations of mobile ad campaigns run across its global platform in 2011 and 2012, 71% of all entertainment campaigns gave consumers the option to watch a video as a post-click action, which was significantly higher than the overall mobile average of 24%. In addition, Millennial finds that 27% of all entertainment campaigns used mCommerce, which was more than double the average for all advertisers. And on the content consumption front, the amount of entertainment content accessed via mobile devices increased 82% from December 2010 to December 2011. Other things you should know:
- Hispanic consumers are 39% more likely to view mobile entertainment content than the overall smartphone audience; African American consumers are 10% more likely.
- Entertainment was the third-best mobile ad vertical on the Millennial Media platform when ranked by spend (from 2010 to 2011, Millennial reports mobile ad spending in the industry increased by 133%).
- Campaigns promoting theatrical releases accounted for 43% of all entertainment campaigns on the Millennial Media platform, followed by those promoting TV shows (30%) and DVD releases (19%).
China will overtake the US in smartphone shipments this year, according to the IDC. The beast from the East will account for 26.5% of all smartphone shipments in 2012, compared to 17.8% for the US. “Looking ahead, [China’s] smartphone market will continue to be lifted by the sub-US $200 Android segment,” said Wong Tech-Zhung, Senior Market Analyst/Client Devices, IDC Asia/Pacific. So much so that IDC sees China accounting for 23.0% of global smartphone shipments in 2016, versus 14.5% for the US. “The fact that China will overtake the US in smartphone shipments does not mean the US smartphone market is grinding to a halt,” said Ramon Llamas, Senior Research Analyst with IDC’s Mobile Phone Technology and Trends program. “Now that smartphones represent the majority of mobile phone shipments, growth is expected to continue, but at a slower pace,” said Llamas. In both IDC’s projects for this year and 2016, China and the US will remain the clear frontrunners in the market, as the rest of the top 5 hang further back (UK: 4.5% in 2012 and 3.6% in 2016, India: 2.5% in 2012 and 8.5% in 2016, Brazil: 2.3% in 2012 and 4.4% in 2016).
Hearst Television has launched an Election 2012 app that is available for free in Apple’s App Store and Google Play. The ad-supported app features breaking national election coverage and lets users browse local content, including videos, articles, and slideshows, from Hearst’s news stations in 25 markets, from Maine to Honolulu. Other features include local “Voter’s Guides,” an Electoral College map, Facebook integration, and what will be live election-night video.
The Social Media Advertising Consortium (SMAC) has added several new members to its Board of Directors, including executives from an array of social media and entertainment companies, such as Reggie Bradford, SVP/Product Development, Oracle (and Founder and CEO of Vitrue); Sabrina Caluori, VP/Social Media & Performance Marketing, HBO; Sharon Feder, COO, Mashable; and Rikard Steiber, Global Marketing Director/Mobile & Social Advertising, Google/Google+; among others. Per the announcement, “the new SMAC leadership team will release research and white papers on social media measurement and ROI and host social media events in a variety of cities centered around innovation, thought leadership, and marketing.” SMAC has also named Andrew Markowitz, Director/Global Digital Strategy Group, GE, as the Chairman of the Board.

The app includes other features such as in-game highlights and access to social networks. Most of the cool live programming stuff will come later this year as NBC Sports Group says it plans to do a second, larger re-launch later this year.
