Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning. It’s Friday, August 30, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Netflix is turning on the laugh track with the premiere of its first “original” stand-up comedy special: Buried Alive, featuring Parks and Recreation’s Aziz Ansari. The new show debuts Nov. 1, and will also be available for a $5 download after the Netflix premiere.
YouTube is giving the boot to the “Video Response” feature on Sept. 12, due to the fact that only four out of every one million users were using the feature. Instead, YT is creating a system to share links to video responses in its comment section. In the meantime, users are being encouraged to create relevant tags, titles and descriptions when uploading a “response” to make them searchable.
The charity supporter and pay-what-you-can web media distributor HumbleBundle.com is now offering “comedy bundles.” The new collections of video and audio content will feature yuksters like Louis C.K. and Jim Norton.
PBS Digital Studios unveiled its latest web series, Game/Show, which studies the intersection of culture and video games. The show can be watched through the PBS Digital Studios as well as the Game/Show channel on YouTube.
HuffPost Live’s LA offices were shut down on Thursday in order to make way for the new international unit called “The WorldPost.” Two thirds of the staff have been offered positions in the New York office.
Google agreed to join Microsoft and Mozilla Corp. and add a “do-not-track” button option to its web browsers. An activated button will stop the Internet giants from accessing people’s web browsing habits for customizable ads, employment, credit or insurance purposes. However, the data can still be used for “market research” and “product development” even after tracking is deactivated.
In Other Words: The FTC called for this button two years ago, but the idea recently gained steam with The White House’s push for Congress to pass a “privacy bill of rights.” Google is expected to add the button to Chrome at the end of this year.
Internet pay TV is leaving cable and satellite providers in the dust, an August IHS report found. From April to June, Verizon Fios and AT&T each boasted a 300,000 increase in subscribers, while cable and satellite providers lost a combined 750,000 subscribers. The report credits the decline to consumers’ opting exclusively for over-the-top devices or services such as Netflix to watch TV.
The Android app is expected to double its revenues from last year and reach $6.8 billion by the end of 2013, according to an ABI Research report released Thursday.
In other Words: The report credits the revenue surge to a) Android’s digital advertising, which is backed by Google’s analytics and b) the ability to charge apps directly to the mobile carrier rather than a credit or debit card.

A free app called Rabt released this week is tapping into the customizable video-viewing trend. The app collects and suggests appropriate YouTube videos based on a series of questions posed to the user when the app opens. Rabt users can watch up to 60 minutes of videos a day, although the app is only available for iPhone and iPad.
In Other Words: This app takes YouTube Recommendations a step further by allowing users to give videos thumbs up or down; in return, users getting videos more tailored to their tastes.
Android Vice President Hugo Barra announced his farewell to Google on Wednesday after nearly six years. He will be joining Chinese phone maker Xiaomi as VP in charge of international business development Android strategic partnerships.

MTV pulled a Catfish on the show’s fans with an online prank to promote the new UK version of the TV show. The campaign, produced with creative agency Ralph, appears to be a live webcam forum in which fans can chat in real time with the show’s characters. However, it’s completely prerecorded and only mimics a live experience. Early tests showed that 75 percent of users didn’t realize they were being catfished. The new series premieres Sept. 2 on MTV UK.
Video advertisements fare better on broadcast TV sites versus web-only destinations or portals when it comes to ad completion rates, according to a new Tremor Video report. The study looked at “impressions” of online video ads that ran through its video hub from April to June and found that completion rates sat at 89% for broadcast sites versus 78% for their web-only sisters. Research also showed that made-for-mobile ads engaged 3.3 percent more consumers compared to the 2.5 percent rate of mobile ads made from TV spots.
HTC is the first non-Chinese company to develop a smart phone specifically for the Chinese market, loaded with features such as the Chinese version of Twitter, for instance. It also aligns with China’s efforts to cut down dependence on Western phone systems by creating its own.
Blip has perfectly utilized Instagram’s “hipster” stereotypes to advertise its new web series “Hipsterhood.” Many have been wondering how exactly to take advantage of Instagram’s 15-second new video feature, but the Blipsters have figured it out. Even Hipsters think it’s cool. Check out the video at www.Cynopsis.com.
