Let the games begin. Google‘s new social network Google+ introduced its first wave of social games on Thursday, launching with a handful of titles including include Rovio’s Angry Birds, PopCap’s Bejeweled Blitz, Wooga’s Diamond Dash and Zynga’s Poker. (Angry Bird fans can also get their fix using Roku’s new premium set-top – see below.) Google Engineering Director David Glazer explained that the selection is limited so that the company can “get the kinks out of our APIs” before opening up the platform to all developers.
 

 
Betting that talking about the weather is still the ultimate icebreaker, The Weather Channel is teaming up with Twitter for the launch of The Weather Channel Social – a new integration that aggregates local, weather-related Tweets across TWC’s television, web and mobile platforms. Powered by Wiredset’s Trendrr social measurement technology, weather.com and mobile users will now be able to see real-time tweets that crop up about local weather conditions. To celebrate the launch, TWC sent out “Sweetery” trucks throughout NYC yesterday to visit agencies and hand out frozen goodies to consumers on the street.
 
Lifestyle magazine publisher Meredith is further expanding its line-up of digital editions, launching iPad subscription editions for Better Homes and Gardens, Parents and Fitness beginning with the Sept. 2011 issues. Annual and monthly subscriptions range from $9.99 to $14.99 per year and average $1.99 for a single edition. Digital subscriptions for the magazines are also available for Android.
 

 
Complying with a federal court order issued earlier this month, remote online DVD-streaming service Zediva has shut down operations after just 6 months in operation. The company, sued by MPAA members for DVD copyright violations, sent an email out to customers on Wednesday evening with the following introduction: “You may have heard by now that we’re having to lay off our DVD-changing monkeys…  :-)”
 
FishBowl Worldwide Media announced production of the pilot for original animated web series The Potts with characters voiced by Dave Coulier and Richard Kind. The pilot was created by David & Goliath Founder and Illustrator Todd Goldman and How I Met Your Mother Executive Producer Chuck Tatham.
 

 
Chicago-based ad data rights management platform BrightTag raised an additional $5 million in funding led by New World Ventures, Tomorrow Ventures, EPIC Ventures and I2A Ventures, per Ad Age. BrightTag’s platform helps advertisers manage relationships with third-party vendors including re-targeters, demand-side platforms and data exchanges.
 

 
Cablevision has reached an out-of-court settlement with Viacom over its video streaming iPad app that allows customers to stream live TV and VOD content within their homes. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but the deal will keep Viacom channels such as MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon on the app.
 
Digital media consultants Real Life Venture signed a deal to become an authorized reseller of thePlatform‘s mpx video publishing platform across Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. thePlatform also signed a reseller agreement with Hemisphere Interactive to sell its while label video service across Australia and New Zealand.
 

 
There was virtually no change in the search market shares from June to July, according to ComScore‘s latest search report. Google Sites led the U.S. explicit core search market in July with a 65.1% market share, followed by Yahoo! Sites with 16.1% (up 0.2 percentage points) and Microsoft’s Bing hanging on to a 14.4% share. Overall, users ran more than 17.1 billion searches last month, up 3% from June.

The next generation of Roku streaming-media set top boxes have arrived in stores, boasting smaller, Apple TV-like cases and new channels including Facebook, Major League Soccer, AOL HD and FoxNews.com, brining the selection to nearly 300 channels. The “Roku 2” line-up comes in three new models:

• the entry level Roku 2 HD features 720p-quality streaming  and sells for $60
• The Roku 2 HD ($80) is capable of 1080p playback
• The top-of-the-line Roku 2 XS ($100) ships with an Ethernet port (for a wired broadband connection,) USB connectivity and a casual gaming remote allowing you to play Angry Birds on your big screen TV

 
A “Tap to Clap” feature will highlight a new iPhone app developed by Rimmel London for ITV‘s The X Factor in Britain this fall, allowing fans to show their appreciation for contestants, performances, judges’ comments, guest stars and results in real time by tapping the screen. The app is part of a major digital overhaul for the show produced by talkbackTHAMES digital, with ITV and Syco TV.
 
Petside.com‘s new app for Android and iOS, dubbed Pet Places, is a ‘Yelp’-type service for pet owners. The app allows you to search for everything from pet stores and clinics to groomers and dog parks, read users reviews of said destinations then find the location of the venues on a GPS-powered map.
 

 
Andrew Sarnow has been named VP/Digital Integrated Marketing, MTV Networks Entertainment Group. He will oversee the digital integrated marketing team for Comedy Central, Spike TV, TV Land, Atom.com and GameTrailers.com, reporting to Dario Spina, EVP/ Integrated Marketing, MTV Networks Music and Entertainment.
 
New York-based online video ad management platform Vindico has hired former NBCU VP Jes Santoro as VP/Sales.

Messaging should enjoy a comeback with the launch of a new Facebook mobile app for iOS and Android. Facebook Messenger, designed to be used in conjunction with the standard Facebook app, mirrors the messaging and chat functions of the former – allowing you to send IMs to individuals or groups of friends. The app appears to be a work in progress, with some obvious features missing such as the ability to see which of your friends in currently on Facebook. The app sets out to compete with BlackBerry Messenger, (which made news this week for being used by several London rioters to coordinate their activities), Google’s Huddles and Apple’s planned iMessage service.
