Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, April 30, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Cartoon Network launches the Move It Movement Tour in partnership with the National Association for Sport and Physical Education‘s (NASPE) Let’s Move In School program.  Targeted to K6-14, the tour is designed to get kids up and moving and living healthier lifestyles.  The summer-long campaign launches tomorrow, May 1, in Washington DC, simultaneous to the beginning of National Physical Fitness & Sports Month, and will then makes its way across the country stopping in 30 markets with support from participating cable affiliates.  On-air (e.g. public service announcements) and online media featuring UFC Heavyweight champ and mixed martial artist Bas Rutten promoting the Move It Movement Tour, will also feature the Let’s Move In School ( www.letsmoveinschool.org) effort, which is aligned with First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Movie! campaign.  Joining Cartoon Network as co-sponsors of the 2010 inaugural tour are 3M Nexcare Products, Crayola, the FDA and Columbia PicturesThe Karate Kid (opening June 11).  The tour will feature a range of fun physical activities and information areas, and will also showcase other core partner groups such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, The President’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports, FDA’s Spot the Block, NBA/WNBA FIT and NFL PLAY 60 and HOPSports.  The Move It Movement Tour is an expansion of Cartoon Network’s long-running Get Animated initiative to combat childhood obesity through recess, education and after school activities.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Fresh TV, in association with Teletoon Canada, has begun production in Toronto on its live-action TV movie, My Babysitter’s A Vampire.  Teletoon plans to premiere the movie in October 2010 on both its English and French-language services.  A spoof on horror movies My Babysitter’s A Vampire, Fresh TV’s first live-action TV movie, stars Matthew knight (Flashpoint, A Heartland Christmas), Atticus Mitchell (How to be Indie), Cameron Kennedy (Toronto Stories, The Latest Buzz), and Vanessa Morgan Mziray (Harriet the Spy, The Latest Buzz), among others.  The movie was created by Tom McGillis and Jennifer Pertsch, with a screenplay by Tim Burns (An American Werewolf in Paris, Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Destroy Malevolence), and directed by Bruce McDonald (Twitch City, Degrassi: The Next Generation)

Nickelodeon  guest starring highlights

  • Nathan Kress, Freddie from Nickelodeon’s iCarly, will guest star as a prince in a new episode of the network’s True Jackson, VP this Saturday, May 1 at 8:30p. 
  • Solange Knowles will make a guest appearance in a new episode of Nickelodeon’s preschool music series Yo Gabba Gabba!, Friday, May 7 at 1:30p, as part of its Mother’s Day preschool marathon 9a-2p.  Solange will perform an original song, Momma Loves Baby, and DJ Lance shares video of when the Gabba pals were all babies.  The marathon will also feature a new episode of The Wonder Pets! (1p), and episodes of Dora the Explorer, Team Umizoomi, Go, Diego, Go!, and Max and Ruby.

Hey, Hey, Hey!  Bill Cosby’s long-running animated show Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids has launched on the iTunes store from Classic Media.  Season one (36 episodes), which debuted on the CBS Saturday morning kid-targeted block in 1972 (and was re syndicated in 1989), is currently available for $29.99 with individual episodes priced at $1.99.  The series is still on target with its focus on a range of social issues, educating kids on topics such as bullying, stealing, and self-esteem.  Created by Cosby, he also served as the host of the show in live-action segments that underlined the episode themes, as well as providing voices for several of the animated characters.  The series was produced by Filmation.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day!!!  To check out participating locations, in the US and around the world, where fans will be able to get a range of free comic books, including titles for kids, from sponsors go to store locator section of www.freecomicbookday.com .  Free Comic Book Day 2010 sponsors include: Ape Entertainment; Archie Comics; Archaia Studios Press; Boom! Studios; Dark Horse Comics; DC Comics; Drawn and Quarterly (D&Q); IDW Publishing; Image; Marvel; as well as C2E2; ComicCon; WizKids; Worldcolor; among others.  Some location will also feature activities and signings.  Even if you aren’t a huge comic book fan (or you used to be)  going to comic book stores on Free Comic Book Day is fun  and great to take kids along as well.

National Wildlife Federation has teamed up with Participant Media and other non-profits on the Social Action Campaign for the family-targeted comedy movie Furry Vengeance, which opens today, to help educated kids/families about the importance of getting outdoors and protecting wildlife and their natural habitats.  In conjunction with the movie, a Furry Vengeance education guide, which includes a range of in-class activities, quizzes, and games, about wildlife, is being distributed to elementary schools nationwide.  The guide also supports the National Wildlife Federation’s ( www.nwf.org ) Be Out There initiative.

CCI Entertainment has recently completed and/or launched new merchandising deals around the world for the preschool animated series Harry and His Bucket Full of Dinosaurs.   Based on the Harry and His Bucket Full of Dinosaurs books, the TV series is produced by CCI Entertainment and Collingwood O’Hare Entertainment in association with Silver Fox Films.

  • Home Entertainment: Abbey Home Media, the home entertainment partner in the UK, has releases the first Harry and His Bucket Full of Dinosaurs compilation DVD; in Spain, Big Picture launched a home entertainment line for the series earlier this year.
  • Publishing: Everest Publishing acquires the TV publishing tie-in license for the property in Spain, and has released a number of new titles at all major retailers; in Israel, Modan has begun releasing TV tie-in books; In Argentina, Publiexpress takes the novelty publishing rights for the series and will publish the first books in fall 2010; Media Services Zawada signs a publishing deal in Poland, launch plans are TBD; In another deal, the series will be a part of Les Reres de Tiji, a kid’s magazine publication created by Paperbox.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (WBIE) unveils its new restructured sales organization with the promotions of Kevin Kebodeaux to SVP/Sales, Americas and Olivier Wolff to SVP/International, Games.

  • In his new position, Wolff is responsible for setting and leading commercial strategies to build WBIE’s business outside of the Americas – overseeing sales and marketing efforts and serving in a consultative role with country management and WBIE staff to fully exploit sales of all game releases.  He reports to both Martin Tremblay and Jim Wuthrich, President, International, Home Video and Digital. Additionally, Wolff also continues in his current role as MD of Spain, overseeing home video, games and digital.
  • Kebodeaux is responsible for all sales operations in the US, Canada and South America. In his new role, he will develop Pan-American distribution strategies for games that are integrated with WBIE’s sister organization, Warner Home Video.  Kebodeaux will dually report to Martin Tremblay and Mark Horak, President, Warner Home Video, The Americas.
