Cynopsis: Kids!

04/29/11

Good morning. It’s Friday, April 29, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Cbeebies will premiere the colorful preschool adventure series Dime Dime (Show me, Show me) in the US Hispanic market as part of the channel’s Tiempo de Despertar morning programming block. The series invites young viewers to learn through play by exploring their surroundings, as ordinary things become extraordinary adventures.  Each episode begins in a magical musical elevator that stops on the top floor of a 10-story building, and with the help of hosts Chris and Pui, kids enter a playroom in the sky where they explore various preschool appropriate topics.  Cbeebies broadcasts in Spanish and is available in the US as part of Dish Networks’ DishLatino package.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Another day  more actors join the cast of director Gary Ross’ movie adaptation of The Hunger Games.   Joining the Lionsgate picture is Elizabeth Banks, as had been rumored, Effie Trinket, who is the attendant/handler for our star Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), one of the two tribute’s from District 12.  Additionally, District 4 gets its tributes in virtual newcomers Ethan Jamieson and Tara Macken.

Gotham Group options author R.L. Stine‘s (Goosebumps, The Haunting Hour) newest kid/tween book, It’s the First Day of School … Forever!, for the big screen, per Heat Vision.  Gotham Group will develop the title as a family film, with CEO/Founder Ellen Goldsmith-Vein set to produce with Gotham’s Eric Robinson, as well as Lookout Entertainment’s Yvonne Bernard and Gemini Girls Productions’ Beth Elise Hawk.  Macmillan Press is set to release It’s the First Day of School … Forever! this July 5, 2011.  The story follows 12-year-old Artie on the first day of school, which begins as he falls out of bed and hits his head hard.  Feeling woozy, of course his mom tells him he’s just nervous about the first day of school.  By the time he gets to school he has syrup in his hair and has been splashed with water in a puddle that makes it look like he had an accident … and well … you get it.  On the second day of school, Artie wakes up and falls out of bed and hits his head hard! Can you say Groundhog Day?

MORE KIDS STUFF

Corus Entertainment’s YTV (Canada) picks up a second season kid-targeted, live-action TV series Mr. Young.  The series revolves around a child prodigy, Adam, who at 14 is now a high school science teacher and his students are his age, while his colleagues and boss are twice his age.  Vancouver-based Thunderbird Films will begin production on the new season of 26×30 episodes in July 2011 (for a total of 52×30).  Created by writer/producer Dan Singer (The Suite Life on Deck, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody), Mr. Young is produced by Thunderbird Films in association with YTV.

The Hub acquires two kid/family-targeted animated series, Jem and the Holograms and Conan the Adventurer, both of which will join the lineup next month.

  • The pop-culture series Jem and the Holograms, which originally aired in first-run syndication from 1985-88, will air on The Hub weekdays beginning Tuesday, May 31, at 7p (with encores throughout the day) and on Saturdays at 10a.  The network will offer viewers a special sneak peek of the first 6 episodes of Jem and the Holograms on Saturday, May 28, from 2-5p.  The series was a joint collaboration of Hasbro, Marvel Productions, as well as Sunbow Productions and was acquired from the Hasbro Studios library.
  • Conan the Adventurer will make its debut on The Hub on Tuesday, May 31 at 7a, and will then continue to air weekdays at 7a (encores on Sundays at 6a).  The series originally ran in broadcast syndication from 199294, and was produced by Jetlag Productions and Sunbow Productions and was acquired from the Hasbro Studios library.

Moonscoop inks further TV deals and home entertainment pacts for the 3D animated HD preschool series SamSam.  Italy’s Rai and Turner Broadcasting Italy have each acquired season two of SamSam (39×8).  In Asia, Okto (Singapore) and cable channel I-cable (Hong Kong) are picking up both seasons of SamSam (52×7 and 39×8).  Additionally, Pelican takes the home video rights for Singapore and Malaysia.  SamSam is produced by Bayard Jeunesse Animation with Araneo, Tiji, Gulli and France 5, and distributed worldwide by Moonscoop, and can be seen in 55+ territories around the world.

The sixth Wimpy Kid book coming this fall 2011.  Amulet Books, an imprint of Abrams, will release the sixth volume in Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid books series sale nationwide in November 2011.  The new book will feature a winter-theme, which will find the Heffley family snowed in.  Information about the sixth installment of the Wimpy Kids series, including promotions, the first printing, the actual lay down date, cover, color, and title of the book, will be announced soon.  This May 10, 2011 will see the release of the expanded and revised Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself Book with a million-copy first printing, and the re-launch of the official Wimpy Kid website (www.wimpykid.com ).  The publisher says to date there are 50+ million Diary of a Wimpy Kid books in print in the US and Canada.
