Good morning. It’s Friday, April 27, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Production has begun on The Smurfs 2, a mixed live-action and computer animated 3D feature film from Columbia and Sony Pictures Animation, which is a sequel to The Smurfs (2011). Set for a July 31, 2013 release in the US, returning from the first movie are Director Raja Gosnell, Producer Jordan Kerner, Executive Producer Ezra Swerdlow, and stars Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara, and Hank Azaria. Brendan Gleeson joins the cast. On the animation side, reprising their roles as the voices of the Smurfs are Katy Perry, Jonathan Winters, Alan Cumming, Fred Armisen, George Lopez and Anton Yelchin, as well as John Oliver. Additionally, joining the voice cast in the new movie are Christina Ricci and JB Smoove. The screenplay is by J. David Stem & David N. Weiss and Karey Kirkpatrick and Jay Scherick & David Ronn, based on the characters and works of Peyo. The visual effects and animation are by Sony Pictures Imageworks Inc.

Miniclip, the popular games website, partners with FunGoPlay (www.fungoplay.com), the virtual sports theme park, making FunGoPlay available to Miniclip’s 70 million gamers. Under the partnership, Miniclip will drive FunGoPlay’s visibility worldwide among its core K6-11 players on Miniclip.com. FunGoPlay, which features 30+ single and multiplayer sports-themed games for online and mobile platforms, can be accessed via Miniclip.com (www.miniclip.com/games/fungoplay) beginning next week.

LICENSING

Babies”R”Us and Heidi Klum are partnering to create an exclusive collection of affordable baby products under the new Truly Scrumptious by Heidi Klum label. Set to debut at Babies”R”Us stores in North America and at Babiesrus.com beginning fall 2012, the new line for newborns, infants, toddlers and growing kids will include apparel, accessories, furniture, bedding, room decor and gear in a range of patters. The fall apparel group will include layette for babies up to 24 months, as well as playwear and separates for K2-5.

The WotWots inks a three-year deal with Milestone Productions for SpottyWot and DottyWot character appearances in the US. Under the agreement Milestone Productions will manage meet and greet character appearances, short custom scripted presentations and special event shows for the preschool property. Season one and two of the educational series The WotWots from Pukeko Pictures can be seen internationally on ABC4Kids (Australia), TVNZ Kidzone24 (New Zealand), The Hub (US) and Treehouse (Canada). American Greetings Properties recently signed on for the worldwide licensing and merchandising rights to the preschool property. Pukeko Pictures is a partnership between Richard Taylor the co-founder/creative lead of Weta Workshop (Lord of the Rings, King Kong), and acclaimed author and kid’s TV creator, Martin Baynton (Jane and the Dragon).

Nickelodeon Consumer Products France (NCP) enters into a new fashion licensing deal with Pyneide Distribution for SpongeBob SquarePants. The new agreement includes a line of t-shirts for kids and adults, which will be available its 14 Pull-In underwear stores in France from May 2012. This is NCP’s second SpongeBob SquarePants deal for products for Pull-In  the first products debuted in January 2012.

Dedicated areas at Toys”R”Us stores will feature a range of So So Happy products from various licensees, including Jem Sportswear (tees), Accessory Innovations (totebags, backpacks, lunch bags, and hard-sided suitcases), High Intencity (hair accessories and jewelry), Planet Sox (socks and slippers), Rock Paper Pencils (stationery), and a selection of popular So So Happy plush toys. MORE KIDS STUFF

Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release the new gymnastics-centric feature-length movie, An American Girl: McKenna Shoots for the Stars, on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, and for digital download on July 3, 2012. Additionally, NBC will air An American Girl: McKenna Shoots for the Stars on Saturday, July 14 at 8p. Based on the American Girl doll line, the new movie stars Nia Vardalos (My Life in Ruins, My Big Fat Greek Wedding), Jade Pettyjohn (The United States of Tara), Ian Ziering (Beverly Hills 90210), Kerris Dorsey (Moneyball, Brothers & Sisters) and former Olympic gymnast Cathy Rigby (Broadway  Peter Pan). The Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD will be available only at Wal-Mart, American Girl retail stores and via americangirl.com. The title will also be purchased via digital download at a range of online retailers.

Preschool channel JimJam, a Chello Zone channel, launches this month on Africa’s My TV satellite pay-TV platform as part of its basic package. JimJam, the only preschool channel on My TV, is broadcast in English. Beginning in next month, May 2012, the channel will debut My Animal Family (26×15) in the territory. From Czech producer Big Media, My Animal Family is uses wildlife footage to create stories about a day in the life of a baby animal and its family. This is the first time JimJam will be available in some of sub-Saharan African territories and is the only channel aimed at preschoolers on the My TV platform. JimJam, which launched in 2006, is available in 12 languages to 17+ million subscribers worldwide.

Viacom International Media Networks completes international sales for a number of Nickelodeon’s TV movies, including The Boy Who Cried Werewolf and The Best Player, A Fairly Odd Movie: Grow Up, Timmy Turner, Big Time Rush Movie and MTV’s The American Mall, with broadcasters in Latin and South America, Canada and Europe. TV Globo (Brazil) acquires Nickelodeon’s TV movies The Boy Who Cried Werewolf and The Best Player; Televisa (Mexico) also picks up The Best Player, The Boy Who Cried Werewolf, as well as A Fairly Odd Movie: Grow Up, Timmy Turner; In Canada YTV signs on for Big Time Rush Movie, The Boy Who Cried Werewolf, The Best Player and A Fairly Odd Movie: Grow Up, Timmy Turner, while VRAK TV takes the French speaking rights for The Best Player and The Boy Who Cried Werewolf; Monte Carlo TV (Uruguay) acquires The Boy Who Cried Werewolf, The Best Player and A Fairly Odd Movie: Grow Up, Timmy Turner, and the musical The American Mall; TV Hondurena (Honduras) takes The Boy Who Cried Werewolf and the special Merry Christmas Drake & Josh following a renewal; RAI (Italy) picks up The Boy Who Cried Werewolf, The Best Player and Fairly Odd Movie Grow Up: Timmy Turner.

Distribution 360 finalizes sales for three of its TV series including Olive the Ostrich, This is Daniel Cook and This is Emily Yeung. The preschool CGI animated series Olive the Ostrich has been acquired by BBC Kids and in Canada by Knowledge Network and TFO (French language Canada). This is Daniel Cook and This is Emily Yeung have both been picked up by TV Film International (Latin America), while Fatallah Films (Middle East) takes rights to This is Daniel Cook.

Thomas & Friends will air in Japan under a new deal between HIT Entertainment and broadcaster NHK. Under the multi-year pact, the animated series will air weekly on NHK’s kid-targeted programming block beginning this month. The content will include the new CG-animated series as well as the hour-long Thomas & Friends specials. All programming will be broadcast in Japanese. NHK will also take a co-production credit in Japan starting with season 16 of the series.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Jason DeMarco is upped to VP/Strategic Marketing and Promotions for Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. DeMarco will be responsible for developing promotional marketing programs, as well as overseeing the development and execution of customized integrated promotions and sponsorships that drive revenues for Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. He is also now responsible for supervising all aspects of the Animation, Young Adults and Kids Media (AYAKM) group’s special events and trade marketing activity, including the Cartoon Network and Adult Swim Advertising Upfront programs. Based in Atlanta, DeMarco is reports directly to Brenda Piper, CMO for Turner Broadcasting System’s AYAKM group. Previously, DeMarco served as creative director, sales promotions for Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. In addition to running hundreds of ad promotional programs and sponsorships, DeMarco is credited with founding Adult Swim’s Williams Street Records, among other successes. Earlier in his career, DeMarco was an associate creative director for Cartoon Network’s Toonami/Miguzi action-adventure franchises and he was key in establishing the on-air look and feel of Cartoon Network.

Sesame Workshop promotes Steven McDonald to VP/Global Strategic Partnerships. In addition to developing corporate partnerships both domestically and internationally, McDonald will be responsible for providing insight and direction in developing new strategic initiatives within a global framework. McDonald, who joined the Workshop in 2003, will continue to report to Anita Stewart, SVP/Strategic Partnerships and Development. He previously toiled as an Account Manager for SmartMoney at Hearst Communications, and prior to that he was Sr. Account Manager on the launch team at Maximum Golf magazine. McDonald also served as Ad Sales Manager at Travel & Leisure Golf and Sports Illustrated. He began his career at Young and Rubicam, Mingo-Jones Advertising and NW Ayer.

Nickelodeon’s Monkey Quest, the action-adventure massively multiplayer online game (MMOG), reaches a milestone as the fastest growing kid-targeted virtual world reaching, according to comScore Media Metrix, with 10 million registered users since it launch a year ago in April 2011. To mark the occasion, Monkey Quest players will be gifted limited-edition battle gear through the end of the month.
