Cynopsis: DIGITAL
4/27/07
Good Morning, it’s Friday, April 27, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
MSNBC.com included a “Rate the Candidates” feature with its coverage of last night’s debate. Viewers are given clips of candidates discussing polices and plans and asked to rate their positions. Meanwhile NBC News placed tight restrictions on other outlet’s coverage of the debates, outlawing live audio or video streaming on the internet. The company went so far as to spell out that no more than 2 minutes of excerpts could be chosen for use after the debate, but only until Saturday May 26, with archiving strictly prohibited. Unobstructed on-screen credit of “MSNBC” must appear during each excerpt and remain for the entire clip. The restrictions ruffled some feathers in the blogging community, to be sure.
~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
FreemantleMedia launched Project V, an online short-form comedy/drama showcasing the lives of six young artists, actors and comedians from the U.S. and Britain. Audiences are asked to weigh in on the artists’ performances by leaving comments on each of their individual homepages and to follow clues about how the story of their lives will unfold. The project was launched by FMX, Freemantle’s cross-platform division, on April 5 and will run for twelve weeks through the end of June.
MTV.com launched a redesign this week, replacing Flash technology with HTML and featuring a starker, simpler look. A new Google-powered search box has been added, and the annoying auto-playing flash video player has been replaced with videos embedded into HTML pages. Clips can be watched one at a time or continuously, in small, mid-size or full-screen format. A cool feature is the video recommendation section that reaches far back into the MTV archives.
Apple iTunes Store revenue grew by 35% during the quarter ending March 31 as Apple reported its best quarter ever, posting revenue of $5.6 billion. iTunes now carries over 5 million audio tracks, 350 TV shows and 500 movies, leading the U.S. market in digital content sales with over 85% of the market, according to Nielsen Soundscan data quoted by Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer.
Sony Pictures Television International and Telemundo are co-producing mobile content for the novella Zorro: La Espada y la Rosa for distribution on AT&T mobile phones. The package includes short video clips updated weekly of the best kisses, best fights and best chases, in addition to Zorro-themed ringtones, wallpapers and mobile games. Beyonce and Alejandro Fernandez sing the theme ringtone. Text the word “zorro” to 386 to access the content.
ABCNews.com will debut a redesign this weekend, featuring a cleaner look and easier-to-navigate features. Look for an embedded video player in the top right-hand corner and more user-participation features.
World Championship Sports Network signed a three-year agreement to provide exclusive coverage of International Ice Hockey Federation games including the IIHF World Championships via broadband and television. WCSN partnered with Dish Network to offer the tournament games on pay-per-view for an all-inclusive package price of $39.95. The championships games begin today and are played through May 13.
ESPN.com entered into a cross-promotional and content-sharing agreement with Ohio State fan site Bucknuts.com. Bucknuts will incorporate ESPN.com video, player ratings and other analysis pertaining to its college football and basketball teams. ESPN.com will utilize Bucknuts’ team pages to fill out its coverage on Ohio State. Bucknuts premium subscribers also get access to ESPN Insider as part of the deal.
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
Joost has signed more than 30 charter advertisers for its free ad-supported broadband video services scheduled to launch later this spring. Major brands such as United Airlines, P&G, Sony and Microsoft have signed up for a three-month trial period to test different interactive formats and delivery methods. Contextual ads can be inserted into relevant programs, for instance, or in overlays that appear in a screen underneath the video. Joost is limiting traditional-style breaks to three minutes an hour to begin with, and charging different rates depending on if sponsors wish their ads to be seen only in the U.S. or Globally.
P2P video platform Azureus will publish all of UNICEF‘s short and long-form video content to its Vuze broadband portal, the non-profit’s first digital peer-to-peer distribution agreement. Celebrities including Sarah Jessica Parker, Shakira and Clay Aiken host news and public service videos on third world issues.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
Comcast reported net income rose by 80% to $837 million during the first quarter, as the operator signed up more digital cable, high speed internet and phone customers than expected. Comcast added a record- 644,000 customers for digital cable, 563,000 for high-speed internet and 571,000 for digital phone services. Demand for HD and DVR services drove the growth, according to executives. Some 38% of Comcast’s 25 million customers take HD or DVR services. Twenty percent now have both.
Microsoft‘s profit jumped 65% on net income of $4.93 billion for its fiscal third quarter ending March 31. Vista, Office and server sales drove the jump. Sales of the Xbox 360 unit fell 21% due to increased competition from Nintendo, while online services posted a $200 million operating loss. Sales of Microsoft’s Zune mp3 player held steady to maintain the #2 place in the market with a 9.1% share. The company will launch a new ad campaign for the player next month.
Nintendo‘s quarterly profit soared to 58.4 billion yen ($489.8 million) from only 7.6 billion yen a year earlier on the strength of sales of its DS handled gaming machine and the new Wii home game platform. The company expects to sell 14 million Wii units this year.
Sun Microsystems introduced the IP-based Sun Streaming System, capable of supporting up to 160,000 simultaneous video streams at up to 2 Megabits per second. Sun demonstrated the new platform at the Tribeca Film Festival, in conjunction with the premier of Ed Burns new film, “Purple Violets.”
Amid the movement to remove DRM in the music industry, MPAA Chairman and CEO Dan Glickman called for “managed copying” of digital content at a Digital Rights Management conference held this week. He said conversations needed to go beyond “lawyers and engineers” in order to insure various DRM systems interoperate smoothly and translate ultimately to a hassle-free experience for users. Meanwhile On2 Technologies, the company that makes the video codec for Adobe’s Flash 8 video software, announced it will integrate DRM into its encoding and publishing products.
The Royal Thai Police is doing its part to stem piracy in Asia. Its Economic and Technological Crime Suppression Division, assisted by MPAA representatives, raided an optical disc manufacturing facility in a Bangkok suburb and seized 140 DVD-R burners, capable of producing 7.5 million pirated DVDs in a year. The cops also found 213,000 DVD-R’s ready to be sold. The MPAA estimated piracy losses at $6.1 billion in 2005, more than a third due to internet piracy.
The FCC decided to push back some of the more controversial elements of its planned auction of airwave spectrum to allow for more public comment, debate and inevitably, further lobbying efforts. The 700 Mhz block of spectrum is the prize companies such as Google, Intel, Yahoo, eBay, EchoStar and DirecTV are waiting to bid on, in order to use it to create a wireless broadband access service. The auction, when it does occur, is expected to raise billion of dollars.
~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~
So called “web 2.0” sites accounted for 12 percent of all US web activity for the week ending April 7, according to online market researcher Hitwise. Online user-supported Wikipedia garnered a market share of 26% in a category of over 3,000 sites. A new study by Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 8% of American internet users visit Wikipedia on a typical day, a higher proportion than those who make an online purchase or visit a chat room.
~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~
Former MPAA chairman Jack Valenti passed away in Washington D.C. yesterday at age 85. He had been staying at John Hopkins University Medical Center after being treated for a stroke earlier this year. Valenti served as president of the MPAA for 38 years until retiring in 2004, and was regarded as the staunchest protector of Hollywood copyrights in the industry. He lobbied tirelessly for the controversial Digital Millennium Copyright Act passed in 1998, arguing the internet would be the downfall of the entertainment industry if left unchecked.
Sony PlayStation console inventor Ken Kutaragi announced his resignation from Sony. Currently Chairman and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, he is seen one of the godfathers of the modern gaming industry, helping PlayStation 2 achieve a 70% market share during its heyday. The launch of Sony PS3 has been plagued with delays, a $600 price tag and a lack of compelling games. Kazuo Hirai, 46-year old president of SCE, will be promoted to CEO to take Kutaragi-san’s place.
~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
Little Merman.com is a web-based reality series following stand up comic Thomas J. Kelly as he has nervous breakdown, quits comedy and becomes the first male mermaid at the Weeki Wachee Springs underwater mermaid show. His goal is to save the historic tourist attraction by becoming the first “merman” in the sixty-year history of the historic Florida tourist attraction. The first five episodes follow Kelly as he quits comedy, gets into shape, moves from New York to Florida and interviews to become the park’s merman. The creator and park officials hope that the docu-comedy will lead to a network reality show about the park. Kelly is editing the series in New York while working as the warm up comic at ABC’s “The View”.
A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange. Email me your suggestions at [email protected] and if I include the site you mention, your name, company and city will be credited. Only one mention per calendar week, to make it fair.
