Cynopsis: DIGITAL
4/20/07
Good Morning, it’s Monday, April 23, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Traditional publishing companies continue to feel the loss of print-related advertising revenue while the increasingly competitive market for online advertising isn’t growing fast enough to pick up the slack. The New York Times Company and Gannett Co. announced first quarter profits declined while Tribune, just purchased by real estate mogul Sam Zell, reported a loss. The Times saw internet revenue grow by 22% from last year, but it expected a 30% growth rate. Tribune’s digital revenues rose 17% to $60 million during the first quarter – a slow down compared to the last four quarters, when growth averaged 29% on annual basis.
ABC Family will launch a new social networking site on May 14 to support its newest original series Greek, a dramedy about fraternity/sorority life. Virtualrush.com is a Facebook-like platform centered around the fictional Cyprus-Rhodes University Greek system, allowing users to create personal profiles, upload content, and virtually “rush” a fraternity or sorority of the character they most resemble on the show. ABCFamily.com also announced new features tied to the season two premier of Kyle XY. A countdown site will stream episodes from season one and feature behind-the-scenes clips, interviews and other content. KyleXY .com will also feature an interactive section where fans can ask star Matt Dallas questions and delve deeper into the mysteries of the show.
Remember John Waters’ Polyester in Odorama? My Name Is Earl will air an “Laugh ‘n Sniff” interactive episode on May 3 at 8 pm ET/7 CT, giving viewers the chance to scratch a card available in the April 30 issue of TV Guide to release certain scents throughout the show. Oreo cookies, the sponsor of the gag, will be one of the six scents, along with “new car smell” and “obnoxious cologne.” The episode will be promoted on multiple platforms including TVGuide.com and NBC.com.
NBC, Broadway Video and AT&T are enabling fans to vote for the best Saturday Night Live Digital Short for the first time this year, with the winner to be announced during the SNL season finale on May 19. The five finalists can be viewed on a 3G AT&T mobile device or at SNL.com. Votes are being accepted via text message through April 30. Voters will be entered into a sweepstakes, the winner of which gets a free trip to the taping of the season finale.
CarandDriver.com, RoadandTrack.com and CycleWorld.com publisher Hachette Filipacchi Media agreed to purchase online ad network Jumpstart Automotive Media for up to $110 million. The company’s automotive sites will be aggregated with Jumpstart’s Vehix.com, J.D. Power & Associates and NADAguides.com. Jumpstart also offers behavioral targeting and search engine marketing for car dealerships.
This Thursday, look for the Cyn opsis Weekender College Edition sponsored by Greek, A New ABC Family Original Series coming in July. The edition will include four editorials on television chosen from the 150+ essays submitted from college students all around the world. The edition will also include a special section of Situation Wanted ads sent in by college students all looking to be hired into our industry. Be sure to pay special attention to these ads!
Political action site MoveOn.org launched the VideoVets project, a collection of user-generated videos from veterans and families of veterans who are supportive of the troops but critical of the war in Iraq. The site asks users to watch the short clips, embed them on their blogs and rate them on YouTube. JFK and Platoon director Oliver Stone is planning to splice bits of the best testimonies together for a TV spot. MoveOn has been getting a lot of mileage out of YouTube lately, after it sued Viacom for ordering its Colbert Report parody to be removed from the site. The activist spin-off group Avazz co-founded by MoveOn.org posted a new parody of The Office last week calling for the firing of Paul Wolfowitz.
Napster and Circuit City are teaming up to compete with both Real Network’s Rhapsody service and Apple’s iTunes music store. Circuit City + Napster, scheduled to launch on April 29, will offer access to “millions” of songs on a subscription basis for $14.95 a month or individual songs in the download-to-own model for 99 cents each. Best Buy, SanDisk and RealNetworks launched a similar online partnership last October.
Middio is gearing up to launch on May 5, a service that finds and tags music videos from YouTube and other sites. The site will offer the option to search by artist or song name.
Just as celluloid prints face deterioration over time, digital media is also in danger of being lost to posterity due to the lack of a long-term storage system, according to Variety. Studios, industry groups and third party technology firms are working to solve the problem. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, for instance, launched a digital archive project to study the issue.
The Senate Commerce Committee scheduled a hearing on the state of U.S. broadband deployment for April 24. Democrats have long been critical of U.S. progress in broadband roll-outs, complaining the country has dropped out of the top-15 ranked counties in broadband penetration.
A new breed of music bloggers are getting a hold of music video clips ripped from advanced copies of MPEG-4 video albums before they go on sale on iTunes and other sites, threatening to undermine sales of the new format. Blogs such as New Music Now, Ali’s Blog and Music for All were offering the videos via peer-to-peer sites such as rapidshare.com, evilshare.com and megaupload.com, according to Billboard.
AT&T’s U-verse television subscribers can now use their mobile phones to program their DVRs from a remote location. The service is free for customers who subscribe to both U-verse and AT&T’s high-speed internet service.
Consumer and privacy groups are petitioning the Federal Trade Commission to look into the implications of the Google/DoubleClick deal to study the issue of protection of consumer data. Groups such as the Electronic Privacy Information Center worry privacy standards will be compromised when tracking information compiled by DoubleClick is combined with search information gathered by Google. EPIC, the Center for Digital Democracy and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group are asking for cookies and other search identifiers to be destroyed and for Google to clearly explain how user information is going to be used.
MySpace was taken to task last week when “Shoot the Rapper” banner ads appeared on the same page of profiles of Virginia Tech students who were killed in the tragedy. Such banner ads are randomly placed on MySpace and other sites, but the incident renewed calls to eliminate such inappropriate placements by improving contextual targeting functionality.
Design, effects and post finishing house Guerilla FX is showcasing the work of graffiti artist Rime for a one-minute web spot appearing on a variety of urban culture, community and sneaker-culture sites. The digital time-lapse video of the mural artist at work showcases and is sponsored by the Adidas Originals Signature Collection, available exclusively at Foot Locker. The ad is also being projected onto building facades throughout New York and LA this month.
The Internet Advertising Bureau called on comScore and Nielsen/Net Ratings to agree to audits and discuss moving beyond panel-based measurement systems long criticized for inaccuracy. “We simply cannot let the internet, the most accountable medium ever invented, fall into the same bad customs that have hindered older media and angered advertisers for decades,” wrote IAB President and CEO Randall Rothenberg in a letter written to both research groups.
ABC Family is encouraging advertisers to participate in the Millennial Engagement Lab to gauge how young people perceive advertising and marketing messages across digital and linear video platforms. The study, conducted with Frank N. Magid Associates’ Millennial Strategy Program, will include in-studio tests, focus groups, one-on-one ethnographies and online surveys.
Metatu.be is a TV blog aggregator created by the same people who made the popular MP3 blog aggregator Elbo.ws. It combs the internet to compile thousands of TV-related blog posts and presents them in a clean, searchable, easy to read format. It also offers a few nice tools for bloggers such as an embeddable list of top ten current shows, based on blog and users hits. MetaTu.be’s newest feature is a “screengrab” module that captures a mosaic of screen grabs allowing users to peruse what’s currently on air or see what a single episode of a show looked like over the course of an hour. Cool stuff.

A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange.
