ESPN responded to backlash after last week’s announcement that it plans to utilize AI technology to produce text game recap stories of select sports events. While the network noted that the AI-generated recaps were intended to enhance coverage of under-served sports that do not currently have game recaps on ESPN digital platforms, and would be reviewed by a human editor, objections to the move included calls for more journalists to cover sports. Responded an ESPN spokesperson, “These automated recaps will allow ESPN staff to focus on feature, analysis and breaking news coverage. ESPN has always worked to combine human capability with emerging technologies as part of its mission to serve sports fans.”

Dentsu has partnered with research firm The 814 Group to form a coalition to encourage advertisers to make credible news outlets part of their media spend. Ad tech companies OpenX and Sightly are onboard as underwriters of the effort, formed after a lawsuit by X prompted the dissolution of the Global Alliance for Responsible Media. “Today, more than ever, it is crucial that the digital advertising community recognizes the intrinsic value of news – not just as a medium, but as a cornerstone of society,” said dentsu Media EVP-Head of Media Responsibility Deva Bronson. “Through this coalition, we aim to highlight that investing in news is not just good ethics; it’s sound business strategy.”

The brand partnership between Hallmark Channel Hallmark and the NFL includes in-stadium promotion of the upcoming original movie, “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story.” Activations include a Hallmark “Star Cam,” branded tailgate activation zones with photo ops and free hot cocoa, and giveaways. “This holiday season, Hallmark is all about bringing joy to the world,” shared Darren Abbott, Chief Brand Officer, Hallmark. “Our new partnership with the NFL and Chiefs is uniquely designed to do just that.” “Holiday Touchdown” premieres Saturday, November 30 at 8p as part of the net’s 15th annual Countdown to Christmas stunt.

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards took place Saturday and Sunday in LA. Among the winners in 99 categories were “Beckham” for documentary or non-fiction series; “Jeopardy!” for game show; Pat Sajak (“Wheel of Fortune”) for game show host, his first win since 1998; Alan Cumming (“The Traitors”), who ended RuPaul’s eight-year winning streak for reality competition host; and “Shark Tank,” regaining the title for structured reality program after a six-year streak by “Queer Eye.” An edited version of the ceremonies will air September 14 on FXX, and stream on Hulu September 15 through October 9.

CANCELED

The journey is over for HBO’s “We’re Here.” “We are honored to have brought four heartfelt and impactful seasons of ‘We’re Here’ to viewers around the world, amidst ongoing hostility directed at drag performers and aggression towards the LGBTQ+ community at large,” said HBO in a statement.

MGM+ has canceled “Beacon 23” after two seasons. The psychological thriller starring Lena Headley and Stephan James was based on the Hugh Howey bestseller.

Season three of “Bosch: Legacy,” slated to premiere in March 2025, will be its last, airing on Prime Video as well Freevee for its final run. “For ten years, ‘Bosch’ and ‘Bosch: Legacy’ have been two of our most defining series for Prime Video, Freevee, and Amazon MGM Studios,” said Vernon Sanders, Head of Television for Amazon MGM Studios. “They are a testament to the enduring power of the storytelling universe that Michael Connelly built for the fans.” But “Bosch” lives on – Amazon has ordered a spinoff series, starring Maggie Q as cold case detective Renee Ballard.

NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” will be cutting back from airing five original shows per week to four during the regular season. ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, CBS’ “Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” and NBC’s “Late Night With Seth Meyers” all have a four-originals-a-week schedule.

Patricia Arquette will star as Maggie Murdaugh, whose husband Alex Murdaugh was convicted of her murder and that of their son Paul, in an upcoming show for Hulu. The limited series comes from co-creator and showrunner Michael D. Fuller (“Rectify”) and co-creator Erin Lee Carr (“Britney vs Spears”).

Production has begun on the strike-delayed sixth and final run of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale. The season is slated to launch in 2025.

“Life After Lockup” returns to We TV on Friday, October 4 at 8p. The reality show follows seven former inmates and their significant others.

Donnie Wahlberg is back to host a new season of ID true crime series “Very Scary People.” Production on eight new episodes began last week. Wahlberg also executive produces the show, which delivered ratings this season that were up 83% from the previous season and drew 6 million viewers across ID.

Apron strings, anyone? A new season of “I Love a Mama’s Boy” launches Monday, September 16 on TLC.

INSIGHTS

Streaming ads struggle to resonate with US teens – only 9% of teens find the best ads on streaming services compared to 27% on YouTube, according to a new report, “Precise Advertiser Report: Teens and Youth,” from Precise TV and Giraffe Insights. How can brands engage with teens? Denis Crushell, Precise TV’s COO, offers his insights.

What was the most surprising finding in the new report?
Whilst we always have an idea of the landscape of media consumption by teens, the percentages at which YouTube and some other platforms “beat” the competition is always the most surprising. We also carried insights this year into the fiercely competitive space of CTV audiences. We found YouTube and Netflix are leading overall consumption with 43% market share, while YouTube by far has the largest ad addressable reach of any of the players.
For example:
· YouTube was the most popular platform for teens consuming content recently at 77%, with mobile and app gaming hot on its heels garnering 64% which equals the juggernaut that is TikTok. Gaming is only trailing behind YouTube by 13%.
· Teens are choosing to watch their favorite shows on Netflix (27%), YouTube (16%) over Disney+ (7%), Amazon Prime (7%), Hulu (10%) and Paramount+ (4%).

With all the billions of dollars pumped in to creating original content on these platforms and even more capital spent on advertising them, they still can’t take eyeballs away from YouTube when it comes to Gen Z.

What can brands do to engage teens via streaming ads?
There is a great opportunity for brands to engage with teens on streaming platforms. We see the largest ad addressable reach on YouTube over any other platforms. Brands need to lean into contextual targeting to effectively advertise to teenagers on the YouTube platform. As an example, it’s no surprise but Mr Beast is the most popular influencer with 42% stating it’s their top channel, while Dude Perfect was at 20% and Good Mythical Morning at 12%.

We feel it’s important brands not only learn where to advertise against these audiences, but how to create good enough ads, which teens are less likely to skip.

How can media companies improve discovery among teens for their programming?
Media companies need to show up where the audiences are consuming this content. We’ve seen in our PARTY report that they spend the majority of their time on platforms such as YouTube, Mobile Gaming, TikTok, AVOD and CTV. What’s interesting from our research is the fact, there are large content areas within these platforms with the highest levels of consumption. For example on YouTube, the most consumed categories are Gaming (43%) and Music (36% of consumption). We’ve also seen teens enjoy discovering new relevant shows with YouTube advertising with 38% of teens saying they learn about new movies from YouTube and 74% saying they watch music videos on YouTube. These are prime content types for media companies to advertise to teens on. YouTube on the big screen is becoming more ingrained into people’s day life too. YouTube CTV absolutely needs to become part of a digital marketing strategy, alongside placing ads inside gaming apps, if they aren’t already doing this.

DoubleVerify announced the rollout of DV’s Inflammatory Politics and News (“IPN”) category on Meta. This expansion enables advertisers to independently authenticate campaign quality against controversial news and political topics, and choose the level of protection that best fits their brand requirements. “As citizens around the world prepare to vote, giving advertisers the ability to choose the content they want to be aligned with is critical,” said Mark Zagorski, CEO of DoubleVerify. “By leveraging DV’s new AI-powered category, advertisers can protect their brand equity and evaluate suitability on Meta based on their specific marketing objectives.”

When it comes to ad spend, things are looking up. Buyers’ 2024 ad spend forecast has been revised to +11.8% from +9.5% projected at the end of 2023 in IAB’s 2024 Outlook Study: 2024 Update. Other key takeaways from the report include:
· Nearly all channels are expected to post higher growth rates YoY, with Linear TV rebounding
· Retail media’s ascent continues, with buyers revising YoY projections from +21.8% to +25.1%
· Measurement challenges persist for the industry, while economic concerns subside.

Off The Fence closed two deals for two-part documentary “The Amazon Review.” Fox Nation has acquired doc for the US, while Channel 4 will air it in the UK.

RATINGS

Viewership for the NFL kickoff game Thursday night averaged 48.9 million viewers, according to AdImpact. The game reached a peak audience of 55.6 million viewers at 10:09 PM ET near the end of the first half. Traditional linear television received a 50% share of the total viewership, while YouTube and YouTube TV captured 16% of the audience. Other streaming platforms collectively held 34% of the viewership.

Sunday’s matchup between No. 1 Texas and No. 3 Wisconsin at the State Farm Women’s College Volleyball showcase scored 584,000 viewers on FOX, making it the fourth-most watched regular season match of all time across any network. Sunday’s second match, between No. 5 Stanford and No. 18 Minnesota, posted 125,000 viewers on FS1, up 42% compared to last year’s women’s volleyball regular season average on the network.

Across its August 28 telecast on NBC and next day Peacock, two-hour special “Toby Keith: American Icon” drew 4.7 million viewers. It was the #1 show among broadcast competition in total viewers, and grew 10% from its “America’s Got Talent” lead-in.

Fox News’ town hall with Donald Trump was the most-watched show on television on Wednesday, drawing 4.4 million total viewers and 667,000 among A25-54. Viewership was up 40% from the network’s last town hall with the former president, in December.
