CBS News will deliver special multiplatform “America Decides: Campaign ‘24” coverage of the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago from August 19 through August 22. CBS News political journalists will provide updates from across the country, with primetime coverage of the convention steered by CBS Evening News anchor and managing editor Norah O’Donnell. During each night’s primetime coverage, O’Donnell will be joined by chief political analyst John Dickerson, chief election and campaign correspondent Robert Costa, chief White House correspondent Nancy Cordes, senior White House and political correspondent Ed O’Keefe, senior White House correspondent Weijia Jiang and national correspondent Adriana Diaz. CBS News digital platforms, including CBSNews.com, the CBS News app and CBS News social channels will also deliver coverage, as will streamers Paramount+ and Pluto TV.

Five people have been charged in connection with the death of former “Friends” star Matthew Perry. According to reports, the five include a live-in assistant, two doctors and a woman known as “The Ketamine Queen.” At a press conference, U.S Attorney Martin Estrada said the defendants “took advantage of Mr. Perry’s addiction issues to enrich themselves.” Perry was found dead in his home in Los Angeles on October 23. A later autopsy showed the cause of death as the “acute effects of ketamine.” Drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine (used to treat opioid use disorder) were also cited as contributing to Perry’s death. Perry had said in the past he was undergoing Ketamine treatment for his addiction issues.

NBC will air the first episode of Peacock original comedy series “Mr. Throwback” on the broadcast network on September 12 at 9p, according to reports. The series, starring Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry, debuted on the streaming service on August 8, alongside Olympics coverage. Curry was part of the USA Men’s basketball “Dream Team” at the Games, which won gold. According to reports, that connection helped make “Mr. Throwback” a Top 5 comedy launch for the streamer – 77% of the series viewers also watched the Olympics. NBC has made similar moves with Peacock shows, including “Dr. Death,” “Killing It,” and “Bupkis.”

Pop icon Katy Perry will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, slated for September 11 at UBS Arena in Belmont Park, NY. Perry, who has won five past VMAs, will also perform at the event, which was originally scheduled to occur on September 10 but was pushed back so as to not compete with the upcoming presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Perry last performed at the event in 2017. Since 2008, Perry has scored 14 Top 10 hits on Billboard charts, including nine No.1 records. Her 2010 album – “Teenage Dream” – had five No. 1 singles, matching the record set by Jackson’s “Bad” in 1987.

The First TV said it has reached a distribution deal with HC2 Broadcasting and is now available in 7 million homes across the country. Major markets include New York, Philadelphia, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Phoenix, Tampa, Minneapolis, Charlotte, and St. Louis. The First TV was recently added to Samsung TV Plus and is also available on DirecTV, DirecTV Stream, U-Verse,Pluto TV, Fubo TV, and many other FAST Channel platforms.

Disney Jr. has greenlit the sequel to its popular animated series, “Sofia The First” – “Sofia The First: Royal Magic” – with “Modern Family” actress Ariel Winters returning to voice the lead character. “Sofia The First” ran on Disney Jr., from 2012-2018. The new series is currently in production and is scheduled for release in 2026 on Disney Jr. and Disney+.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

According to Deadline, Kali Rocha is set to return to “Grey’s Anatomy” as Sydney Heron, 17 years after she last appeared on the ABC medical drama. Rocha is scheduled to do three episodes in the series’ upcoming 21st season. Heron was first introduced during the show’s second season, a fourth-year resident known for her optimism. Her last episode was in 2017. This isn’t the first time the show has brought back long-gone characters. According to Deadline, Kate Walsh returned in Season 18 10 years after her character Addison exited the show and last season Jessica Capshaw’s Arizona returned after a 5-year hiatus.

Paramount+ said Grammy-nominated country star Jelly Roll will cameo in the upcoming second season of “Tulsa King,” which will premiere September 15 in the U.S. and internationally. Starring Sylvester Stallone and executive produced by Oscar® nominee Taylor Sheridan, Oscar® nominee and writer Terence Winter, and multi-award-nominated director Craig Zisk, “Tulsa King” is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios exclusively for Paramount+. Televangelist Joel Osteen has launched his own FAST channel – The Joel Osteen Network – on the Roku Channel. The network offers round-the-clock content from Osteen, including weekly sermons, original series addressing everyday life issues, and special events from Lakewood Church that blend faith and music.

Netflix has picked up “What’s Next? The Future with Bill Gates,” a five-part docu-series that follows the tech icon as he explores some of the world’s most pressing issues. The series is set to premiere on September 18.

TECH TALK

New analysis from Go Addressable and MRI-Simmons found that 80% of adults 18-34 watch both linear and streaming TV, which the researchers said highlights the importance of using addressable TV as a tool to reach audiences in multiscreen environments. In a separate study with Advertiser Perceptions, Go Addressable found that 65% of advertisers agreed they would be more likely to consider addressable TV as a key component of their media mix. With identity becoming more important for advertising due to the loss in data quality, it was also found that half of advertisers have used a data service to provide identified first-party audiences in the past year.

About 91% of parents believe brands that advertise on kids/family content are more trustworthy than brands that advertise on other types of content, according to Future Today’s latest Family Insights report. Future Today partnered with The Insights Family for the study, to understand how families consume FAST content, including on “Happy Kids,” Future Today’s own ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) platform. More than half (62%) of families watch content on streaming services daily with consumption shifting from Cable TV to Streaming TV. In addition to content, families are also watching ads – 96% of parents say they engage with ads on “HappyKids,” and nine in ten kids discuss the ads after they appear. The study also found ads related to retail (56%), restaurants (55%) and travel (54%) had the most traction.

Digital advertising technical standards body IAB Tech Lab said it has made significant updates to the US National Section of the Global Privacy Platform. Moving forward, the US National Section will be renamed the Multi-State Privacy Agreement (MSPA) US National Section. These updates expand the coverage of the MSPA US National Section and provide detailed clarifications to support proper compliance usage within the digital advertising ecosystem. In October 2022, IAB and IAB Tech Lab launched the MSPA and state-level sections in the GPP to ensure compliance with new state privacy laws, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, and Virginia. Other changes include renaming the US National Section the “MSPA US National Section,” to which 14 additional states have been added. The public comment period is open until September 12.

With local, state and national political races gobbling up ad inventory, 94% of marketers will need to spend more on advertising this year, according to Wunderkind’s and studioID’s “2024 CMO State of the Union Report.” The study also found that 72% of retail marketing executives are extremely or very concerned about developing advertising strategies amid the 2024 election cycle. Political ad spending is estimated to top $12 billion this year, and with the pressure to buy up ad units, brands will likely spend 10% to 20% more on advertising in non-battleground states, and as much as 50% more in battleground states than they do during non-election years, the study says. To compensate, nearly half of respondents (43%) say they are leaning more heavily on blogs, websites, email, or SMS to get their messages across.

In-scene advertising and virtual product placement company Ryff has partnered with adventure brand Extreme to offer brand integration opportunities across their library of action sports content, targeted at Gen Z to Millennial audiences. Video content from Extreme’s social media and FAST channels – including Unreel, Auto Allstars, Extreme Hangout and NextUp Live Comedy – will be available for brands to select through Ryff’s Spheera marketplace starting this month. The partnership results in a global social media following of almost 20 million fans, 300 million views per month and an audience of male/female (70/30) viewers aged 18-34.

Fresh off a gold medal performance at the Paris Olympics, basketball legend LeBron James apparently needs a drink, as he is starring in a digital ad campaign for Lobos 1707 Tequila & Mezcal with actress and singer Victoria Justice. James portrays an international spy – Agent 1707 – in the espionage-themed spot, which will run on social media, Hulu and Peacock.

Disney named Adam Smith chief product and technology officer for Disney Entertainment and ESPN, taking over for Aaron LaBerge, who left in June to become CTO and head of online sports betting company Penn Entertainment. Penn reached a deal with ESPN last year to rebrand its Barstool Sportsbook business to ESPN Bet. Smith will begin his new job on September 3 and report to Disney Entertainment co-chairmen Alan Bergman and Dana Walden and ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro.

IN MEMORIAM

Peter Marshall, the smooth-voiced host of pioneering game show “The Hollywood Squares,” (1966-1980) for 16 years, died Thursday. He was 98 years old. Marshall was originally a singer and accomplished performer on Broadway and took the game show gig on a lark in 1966 after starring on Broadway in a Tony-nominated musical comedy – “Skyscraper.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marshall wasn’t interested until he learned the job would go to comedian Dan Rowan – later of “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” – an early rival. What was supposed to be a 13-week job turned into a 16-year career. Marshall hosted game shows “Fantasy” (1982-83, with Leslie Uggams), “All-Star Blitz,” (1985) “Yahtzee” (1988-89) and “Reel to Reel” (1998) after “The Hollywood Squares” and was inducted into the American TV Game Show Hall of Fame in 2007. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Laurie; children Suzanne, Jaime and Pete LaCock, a former first baseman with the Chicago Cubs and Kansas City Royals; sons-in-law David and Steve; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. His son David, 68, died in 2021 from COVID complications.

Actress Gena Rowlands died Wednesday at her home in Indian Wells, CA. She was 94 years old. No official cause of death was noted, but according to reports Rowlands had been battling Alzheimer’s disease for five years. Rowlands was known for her Oscar-nominated roles in “A Woman Under the Influence” (1974) and “Gloria,” (1980), directed by her husband John Cassavetes, and “The Notebook,” (2004) directed by her son Nick, but has a long history of roles on TV. In the 1960s she had small roles in TV classics like “Bonanza” (1959-73), “77 Sunset Strip” (1958-64), “The Girl From U.N.C.L.E.” (1966-67), and “Dr. Kildare” (1961-66). In 1967 she played socialite Adrienne Van Leyden on primetime soap opera “Peyton Place” (1964-1969) for 39 episodes. Rowlands also won three Primetime Emmy Awards, for roles in TV movies — “The Betty Ford Story” (1987) and “Face of a Stranger” (1991), and “Hysterical Blindness” (2002). In 2004 she received a Daytime Emmy for her role in Showtime’s “The Incredible Mrs. Ritchie” (2003), and in 2015 was awarded an honorary Oscar.
