Former President Donald Trump says he has agreed to debate Vice President Kamala Harris on three networks, including ABC. “We’d like to do three debates,” Trump said at a press conference from his Mar-A-Lago estate in Florida. “I think it’s very important to have debates, and we’ve agreed with Fox on a date of September 4.” Trump added that he has also agreed to a debate with Harris on NBC, and on ABC. Trump had been scheduled to debate current President Joe Biden on ABC on September 10, but those plans were scrapped after Biden stepped out of the presidential race in favor of Harris. ABC confirmed that its debate between Trump and Harris is set for September 10 and that David Muir and Linsey Davis will moderate. However, Trump admitted that he hasn’t actually solidified a deal for the three debates with the Harris team. “The other side has to agree to the terms,” he said. “They may or may not agree. I don’t know if they’re going to agree.”

Paramount Global said its pending merger with Skydance Media prompted it to take a $5.98 billion good-will impairment charge tied mainly to its linear cable networks – in the second quarter. The write-down comes one day after Warner Bros. Discovery took a $9.1 billion impairment charge for its cable networks. Paramount agreed to be purchased by a consortium led by Skydance in July in a deal valued at $8 billion. That transaction is expected to close next year. Paramount, the owner of CBS, the Paramount movie studio and cable networks like Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and MTV, said overall revenue in the period fell 11% due to declines at its film and traditional TV units. The streaming business turned a profit for the first time, with ad sales at Pluto and Paramount+ rising 16%, but it wasn’t enough to counter the linear declines. Net losses for the period rose to $5.3 billion and Paramount Global said it planned to cut $500 million in costs over time, adding that it planned to cut its U.S. workforce by 15% this year, mainly in redundant positions in marketing and communications, finance, legal, technology, and other support functions.

NBCUniversal Local, Greater Good Charities, Hill’s Pet Nutrition and The Animal Rescue Site are partnering on the fifth “Clear The Shelters” pet airlift mission from Louisiana to New Jersey, transporting more than 100 at-risk shelter cats and dogs on August 13, to celebrate the 10th annual nationwide pet adoption and donation campaign, which begins August 10. The pets will be flown from New Orleans to Morristown, N.J., and received by several shelters, which will provide any needed medical care and place the pets for adoption.

Production has wrapped on Great American Family original movie “A Wreathmaker Christmas,” which will premiere during Great American Christmas 2024.

The Paris Olympics have delivered spectacle, drama and ratings. What are the lessons learned from this summer’s Games? What accounted for its success? Cynopsis asked Brent Magid, President and CEO of consumer intelligence and strategy firm Magid, to weigh in.
· Live TV Imperative. Works better in Paris (+9 hrs) and in LA than it did in 2020 in Tokyo (+16 hours) or it will in 2032 in Brisbane (+17 hours). And round-the-clock coverage satisfies our increasingly round-the-clock lives.
· Linear Broadcast Linchpin. Broadcast clearly still works for the zeitgeist live cultural moments. 16+ million per night in prime. And great #s in Daytime. But, as ever, will viewers stay at these two dayparts after the games? In two dayparts where quality has largely been downgraded over the years?
· Great Tech Competency from NBCU. Comcast’s video service expertise resulted in opportunity for their tech, such as “Gold Zone.” NBCU is going to get good practice – they own the U.S. media rights to the Olympic Games through 2032, which are scheduled for Paris (2024), Milan Cortina (2026), Los Angeles (2028) and Brisbane (2032). Over 50 simultaneous live events bodes well for a streaming multi-net approach – until there are glitches.
· National Streaming Adoption. We are, as a nation, finally and fortunately at critical mass in nationwide SVOD audience and an elegant UI across all providers.
· Keen use of all types of Celebs. Snoop of course, but there has been a gaggle of other equally effective and engaging celebrities – both co-opted (from Mike Tirico on-screen to Tom Brady in-crowd to Flavor Flav in-village) and created (LeBron to Simone to Noah Lyles to Sydney McLaughlin to Katie Ledecky to breakout rugby star Ilona Maher
· Media Conglomerate Synergy, or, as NBCU refers to it as, “Symphony.”
· Fixed Share of Attention – re entertainment viewer behavior – not much in Theatres or counterprogrammed TV to dilute interest
· Location Location Location. Hard to beat the iconography and history and romance. And relative proximity – you can sell Paris +9 better than you can sell Brisbane +17! Love the opening ceremonies or hate them, they were uniquely Parisian and drove spirited dialogue.
· Team USA’s success (both golds & total medals!) made people want to tune in.
· Social Media, but moreover our society’s Social Community. A big audience drives itself – word of mouth is a big driver of viewership, especially for the excitement and immediacy and changing narrative of live sports.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

”Love & Marriage: Detroit” will return for an all-new season September 7 at 9p, immediately following the season finale of “Love & Marriage: Huntsville” at 8p on OWN. “Love & Marriage: Detroit” will move to its regular time slot of 8p on Saturdays beginning September 14.

Spectrum News 1 announced a new three-hour weekday news program hosted by journalist Giselle Fernandez – “The Rush Hour” – will premiere August 19. The show will air Monday through Friday from 4-7p, offering in-depth news reports about the issues of interest to the people of Los Angeles. Additionally, Kelvin Washington will now greet viewers in the morning with “Your Morning on Spectrum News 1,” while anchor Amrit Singh will shift to midday with “Your Afternoon on Spectrum News 1” along with his continued nightly duties on “Inside the Issues.”

Dog Whisperer César Millán returns for season five of “César Millán: Better Human Better Dog,” premiering August 16 at 8p on National Geographic. The 12-episode season includes the case of a dog who is triggered by bags, a red-zone rehab for a nearly blind and deaf dog and an overexcited puppy whose parents lack leadership. This season also marks the renowned dog behavior expert’s 20th anniversary on television, as his National Geographic series “Dog Whisperer with César Millán” debuted in 2004.

“Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?,” the new series hosted by retired NFL star Travis Kelce, will premiere October 16 on Prime Video with three episodes, followed by one new episode weekly. Celebrity participants include comedians Nikki Glaser, Natasha Leggero, Nicole Byer, and Ron Funches, Thursday Night Football analyst Ryan Fitzpatrick, former NFL wide receiver Chad Ochocinco, “Real Housewife of Beverly Hills’” Garcelle Beauvais, “Vanderpump Rules” star Lala Kent, podcaster Sophia Stallone, and actress and producer Lilly Singh.

Comedian Roy Wood Jr. will host “Have I Got News For You,” the American version of the long-running BBC comedy series. Produced by Hat Trick Productions for CNN Originals, the ten-episode limited series will premiere September 14 at 9p on CNN.

UP Faith & Family will premiere family drama series “These Stones” on September 5, with new installments of the six-episode series appearing weekly.

RETAIL MEDIA

Freeosk announced an integration with Place Exchange, the supply platform for programmatic out-of-home media, to offer advertisers access to in-store, experiential retail media inventory for the first time. Marketers can now seamlessly activate messaging on Freeosk’s discovery kiosks that provide immersive shopper engagement. Initial in-store inventory will be available to influence shopper behavior at ShopRite through the same demand-side platforms advertisers already use. “The demand for in-store retail media activation is surging as marketers push for incremental growth opportunities,” said Ari Buchalter, CEO of Place Exchange. “Brands want highly motivating, immersive experiences to make lasting impressions that promote trial and build CLV (customer lifetime value). We are excited to provide access to Freeosk’s powerful in-store media.”

STREAMING

InsightTV reached a new distribution partnership with DirecTV, increasing its US expansion with the launch of two channels – INFAST (Lifestyle) and INWONDER (Science & Technology), as well as a curated selection of Video on Demand content including INSIGHT ORIGINALS. The partnership further builds upon Insight TV’s presence in the North American market, following recent deals with Fubo, Anokii, and Roku.

Plex launched 92 more FAST channels worldwide in July in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Spain, Brazil, France, and Germany. Plex claims to have the most extensive FAST channel lineup in the world, including over 800 free channels streamed in the U.S. and nearly 1,200 channels worldwide, available in over 195 countries.

TV5MONDE has launched TV5MONDEplus on all Comcast Xfinity and Xumo streaming devices. This expands the reach of the streaming service to more than 13 million Xfinity video customers across the U.S., plus millions of additional streaming users, via the Xfinity X1, Xfinity Flex, Xumo Stream Box and Xumo TV devices.

TECH TALK

Maybacks Global Entertainment, a subsidiary of Authentic Holdings, Inc., and ZEASN Technology Private Limited have signed a license and partnership agreement that gives Maybacks the ability to market its iDreamCTV Smart TV App to ZEASN’s 180 million users worldwide. ZEASN’s CTV advertising platform, Whale Ads, will be integrated with the iDreamCTV App and Whale Ads will integrate our App with the global Top 5 CTV advertising partner network, including Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Google Chromecast and Android TV.

Music video network Vevo said it has partnered with ad tech platform Nexxen to help grow its programmatic footprint, granting a wider variety of advertisers access to its premium inventory, particularly across CTV.

Effectv, the ad sales division of Comcast Advertising, is introducing a suite of new, multiscreen TV advertising solutions aimed at helping political advertisers connect with voters and potential voters as viewership habits shift leading up to the November Presidential Election. The solutions include: New Political Audience Segments allowing advertisers to activate more in-depth standardized audience segments; Campaign-Building Tools, which expand the capabilities of LENS, a cross-platform ad analytics solution, to include a custom suite of solutions for political advertisers; Campaign Messaging Performance Measurement, via a partnership with Dynata, allowing advertisers to tap into brand lift insights; and Enhanced Campaign Reporting and Insights, that allow Effectv Streaming buyers to see ad impression delivery on a geographical basis.

TransUnion’s latest Consumer Pulse Survey shows that despite inflation concerns, streaming services remain a crucial part of daily life, with Gen Z showing significant engagement with streaming ads. According to the survey, about 4% of consumers are concerned about inflation, yet only 25% are worried about the cost of streaming services, with Gen Z 2.07 times more likely than Baby Boomers and 1.19 times more likely than Gen X to look up a product after seeing a streaming ad. Gen Z also is 1.8 times more likely than Gen X and 9 times more likely than Baby Boomers to purchase a product after seeing a streaming ad. Gen Z were also the most likely among all US consumers surveyed to have both canceled (39%) and added (20%) a subscription or membership in the last three months.

SPORTS UPDATE

Max has acquired exclusive broadcast rights for a selection of Premier League and Emirates FA Cup matches for the 2024-25 to 2027-28 seasons in Mexico and Central America. With broadcast production by TNT Sports, coverage begins on August 10, with Manchester City vs. Manchester United for the 2024 FA Community Shield title. This season of the Premier League, which kicks off on August 16, will include five matches per round on Max, as part of its live sports offering. In Mexico, some of the matches will also be broadcast on TNT. Max will present 190 matches during each season of the League, in addition to 40 corresponding Emirates FA Cup matches, and the annual FA Community Shield. The Premier League joins the UEFA Champions League, which will also be available for the next 3 seasons.

Transmit and ReachTV have formed a strategic partnership that will leverage Transmit’s advanced platform to deliver a seamless and enhanced advertising experience within ReachTV’s live sports content, already deployed across more than 750 venues, 2,400 airport gates, and 500,000 hotel rooms across North America.

FloSports has expanded its coverage of the Gulf South Conference to include soccer, baseball, softball and women’s lacrosse. The increase comes in year two of a five-year agreement. Beginning in Fall 2024, the four added sports will have regular season and championship events streamed exclusively on FloSports and covered across its digital media channels.

All3Media International will represent Curve Media’s “Chess Masters,” a factual entertainment format that pits 16 players from different backgrounds and locations in the UK against each other. Commissioned by BBC Two, each game will take place in the Chess Masters glass box before one is crowned Chess Master.

Asian content streaming service Rakuten Viki said it will bring three new Viki Originals to the platform in August. The new series, all of which are K-Dramas, include “Bad Memory Eraser,” which arrived on the platform August 2, “DNA Lover,” launching August 17, and “Cinderella at 2AM,” debuting August 24.

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the nominees for the 2024 News & Current Affairs categories. The 8 nominees span 6 countries: Brazil, Bulgaria, India, Israel, Qatar and the United Kingdom.
