Shari Redstone, controlling shareholder of Paramount Global, has reached a tentative agreement to sell her stake in the company to Skydance Media, reports Bloomberg News. Paramount stock rose more than 15% after the news broke yesterday afternoon.

The protracted proxy battle at Disney is over, and Disney emerged the victor. The company handily fended off challenges against its board by Trian Management and Blackwells Capital in a shareholder vote. “I want to thank our shareholders for their trust and confidence in our Board and management,” said CEO Bob Iger. “With the distracting proxy contest now behind us, we’re eager to focus 100% of our attention on our most important priorities: growth and value creation for our shareholders and creative excellence for our consumers.”

The FCC will vote on April 25 to restore Net Neutrality, which would bring back a national standard for broadband reliability, security, and consumer protection, reinstating the FCC’s authority over internet service. “After the prior administration abdicated authority over broadband services, the FCC has been handcuffed from acting to fully secure broadband networks, protect consumer data, and ensure the internet remains fast, open, and fair,” said FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel. “A return to the FCC’s overwhelmingly popular and court-approved standard of net neutrality will allow the agency to serve once again as a strong consumer advocate of an open internet.”

Nielsen will make its combination of panel data and big-data measurement systems available to use as its preferred currency effective in September, the company announced this week. The big data, from 45 million households and 75 million devices, is combined with the 40,000 households participating in Nielsen’s panel to create the new ratings.

Sony Pictures Television Advertiser Sales announced offerings for the 2024 Upfronts will continue to include options in live viewing, integrations, and syndicated programming along with Great Entertainment Television. Opportunities exist with “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune,” as well as positions in other syndicated shows.

Free TV Networks will launch a third national broadcast network, DARE, featuring unscripted series from the library of A+E Networks, including “American Pickers,” “Storage Wars,” “Pawn Stars,” “Alone,” “Swamp People,” “Counting Cars,” and “Ax Men,” among others. DARE, which will debut in more than 80% of the US on July 1, follows the launches on January 1 of THE365 and OUTLAW.

Silver Lake Capital is acquiring 100% of the shares of Endeavor Group Holdings it does not already own. “We believe this transaction will maximize value for all of Endeavor’s public stockholders and are excited to continue to unlock and invest in the growth opportunities ahead as a private company,” said Endeavor CEO Ariel Emanuel. Endeavor is the majority owner of TKO Group Holdings, owner of the UFC and WWE. TKO will remain a publicly traded company.

Ethan Hawke has joined Stone Village Television’s adaptation of Angie Kim’s novel, Happiness Falls, as an executive producer. Joining him are his Under the Influence Productions team members Ryan Hawke and Mickey Schiff, alongside Dylan Russell, with Maria Breese-McLain, Bill Way and Elliot Whitton producing.

FOX First Run has renewed its three game shows: “25 Words or Less,” “Pictionary,” and “Person, Place, or Thing.” The programs, now all produced in Atlanta, will continue to run on the FOX-owned stations through the 2024-2025 season with the previously renewed, “TMZ,” “TMZ Live,” “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” “Sherri,” and “Extra.”

Additional cast members for Starz drama “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” include Brian McCardie (“Time”), Jhon Lumsden ( The Famous Five”), Sara Vickers (“Watchmen”), and Peter Mullan (“Ozark”). Production on the prequel series is underway in Scotland.

Toonz Media Group and Be That Spark Corp, a joint venture between BLKBX Originals and Zuroam Media, are teaming for a co-production and co-distribution agreement for the upcoming 3D animated series, “Little Sparks.”

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

FOX Nation will debut a new collection of “COPS: Spring Break” episodes beginning Friday, April 5. Episodes, showcasing the uptick in crime in spring break hotspots, drop at 6p.

“Hotel Cocaine” premieres Sunday, June 16 on MGM+, with new episodes airing weekly until August 4. “Hotel Cocaine” is the story of Roman Compte (Danny Pino), Cuban exile and general manager of Miami’s Mutiny Hotel.

“Judged by Matt Walsh,” a reality courtroom comedy series starring Walsh (“The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh Show”), a self-described “theocratic fascist,” premieres Tuesday, April 9 on DailyWire+.

COMING UP

“Turtles All the Way Day Down,” a film based on the bestseller by John Green that explores anxiety through the eyes of a 17-year-old, premieres Thursday, May 2 on Max.

NewsNation will present a special edition of “Cuomo” featuring a live audience and Mike Rowe (“Dirty Jobs”), focused on the state of trade jobs as an alternative to four-year colleges. “Trading Up” airs Wednesday, April 10 at 8p.

STREAMING

Fab Factory Entertainment has made a major investment in the In The Black Network, the AVOD founded by former FOX Soul chief James DuBose and launched in October of 2023. “James and his team at In The Black have created a culturally important content network for an audience thirsty for programming that honors and elevates Black culture,” said Rebecca O’Hara, Co-CEO of Fab Factory Entertainment.

Spotify announced Spotify Hits, a new initiative that spotlights innovative advertising campaigns that ran on Spotify in the past year. “From Salesforce to Glossier, advertisers are increasingly using digital content to create unique and engaging experiences for their audiences,” said Brian Berner, Head of Global Sales & Partnerships. “With Spotify Hits, we want to showcase the brands that are defining what best-in-class looks like on our platform and give them a moment of well-deserved recognition for being creative leaders in this space.”

RETAIL MEDIA

Walmart is enhancing its Walmart Connect solutions, including automating and scaling its advertising to increase accessibility to more advertiser types, including the API and agency partners that support them. Walmart Display is becoming primarily programmatic and auction based, with greater access and control, and starting this month available to brands of all sizes. Additionally, recent pilots with Roku and TikTok are rolling out to advertisers. “The shopping journey isn’t linear, making omnichannel connections even more critical to brands,” wrote Rich Lehrfeld, SVP and GM, Walmart Connect, in a blog post. “That’s why we continually explore new media experiences that both help marketers solve their needs across the entire funnel and are additive to the customer’s shopping journey.”

PubMatic struck a new partnership with Instacart to leverage first-party, retail media data off of Instacart in a privacy-compliant, scalable programmatic advertising solution via PubMatic’s Convert. Mars will be one of the first brands to activate Instacart’s retail media data with PubMatic via deal ID for CTV and premium video campaigns. “Advertisers today are grappling with signal loss and looking for new ways to effectively target and measure their campaigns,” said Tim Castelli, VP of Global Advertising Sales at Instacart. “Brands realize that Instacart’s retail media data is a valuable, performant solution.”

TECH

The US Joint Industry Committee announced Comscore and VideoAmp have received full certification as a transactional currency for the US advertising marketplace. The companies had been granted conditional certification, along with iSpot, which remains conditionally certified pending a final certification decision expected to be made in the next certification window, scheduled for June 2024.

FOX Corporation has launched its expanded audience network and ad tech platform, AdRise. Acquired as part of the Tubi deal in 2020, AdRise will now power OneFOX, FOX’s cross portfolio inventory product which includes FOX Sports, FOX Entertainment, FOX News Media and Tubi. “AdRise has a reputation as a first mover in CTV advertising and has pioneered and underpinned the growth of our Tubi streaming business from the very beginning,” said Paul Cheesbrough, CEO of Tubi Media Group. “We’re now extending the team and technology platform to power our audience network and video inventory across all of FOX, unlocking unique value for our agency and advertising partners.”

Telegram has launched a new suite of business features enabling users to turn their account into a business account. Users can display their hours of operation and show their location on a map, customize their start page, and showcase products and services. Businesses can also use chatbots to process and answer customer inquiries automatically. The features are free for users with a $4.99 per month Premium account.

OpenAI shared preliminary insights and results from a small-scale preview of a model called Voice Engine, which uses text input and a single 15-second audio sample to generate natural-sounding speech that closely resembles the original speaker. Examples of potential benefits include providing reading assistance to non-readers; translating content; reaching global communities by improving essential service delivery in remote settings; supporting people who are non-verbal; and helping patients recover their voice. That said, “We recognize that generating speech that resembles people’s voices has serious risks, which are especially top of mind in an election year,” acknowledged the company in a blog post. “We are engaging with US and international partners from across government, media, entertainment, education, civil society and beyond to ensure we are incorporating their feedback as we build.”

The NewFronts agenda has been set, with virtual and in-person events running from April 29 to May 2, bookended by Google and TikTok. Absent from the party are Amazon, which moved its presentation to Upfront week, and Peacock, which has been integrated into other NBCUniversal presentations.

CIMM and OpenAP have launched an identity resolution study to explore the future of the identity resolution ecosystem in the advanced TV ecosystem. Working collaboratively with the wider industry, the new study, delivered by ThinkMedium, will include:
· A review of the current IDR marketplace, clearly mapping out the relationships between different first- and other party identity spines and providers.
· A diagnostic assessment of what’s working well, what isn’t, and why, across different use cases.
· An assessment of the opportunities for industry-wide improvements, with strategic recommendations for improvement, interoperability and innovation.

“Many aspects of the fast-developing identity ecosystems are performing well, supporting a growing range of use cases and transactions across publishers, platforms, and agencies – and rapid development of clean room infrastructure is supporting this growth, along with important trends and initiatives across the market aiming to increase the importance of identity within the TV advertising landscape,” said Jon Watts, Managing Director, CIMM. “But in order to support the future of advanced TV advertising, the industry must recognize, understand, and address needed improvements to the current identity landscape.”

Vizio has expanded its partnership with ad intelligence company AdImpact, licensing its proprietary ad catalog ahead of the upcoming political season. For political buyers, this will provide the ability to target under and over-exposed audiences, optimize reach and frequency across households, and extend CTV-first campaigns on VIZIO to additional devices, along with providing granular insight into ad exposure at the zip code and congressional district level, and provide a better understanding of the incremental reach of CTV vs Linear.

Nielsen’s Gracenote has expanded its FAST Program to the US, enabling content owners to distribute their programming to streaming platforms along with Gracenote metadata. “Go-to-market complexity in the FAST ecosystem can slow the process of launching channels and getting content in front of entertainment-hungry viewers,” said Tim Cutting, Chief Revenue Officer at Gracenote. “By removing obstacles for content owners in the US, the Gracenote FAST Program facilitates wider content distribution, better content discovery and deeper viewer engagement.”

When March is not enough: Fox is launching a new post-season college basketball tournament, The College Basketball Crown, with AEG Worldwide. Sixteen teams will compete at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas from Monday, March 31 to Sunday, April 6, 2025. Games will air on Fox and Fox Sports 1. Teams that did not qualify for the NCAA tournament will be eligible for the College Basketball Crown, with two automatic qualifiers coming from each participating conference and additional teams chosen by a committee. “Postseason college basketball is one of the most exciting times of year and Fox Sports is proud to be at the forefront of efforts to evolve and elevate the sport,” said Jordan Bazant, EVP of Fox Sports. “Alongside AEG and the Big Ten, Big 12 and Big East, we are thrilled to provide more opportunities for student-athletes to compete in high quality postseason college hoops.”

TNT Sports, Warner Bros. Games and the National Hockey League are joining forces to bring viewers hockey and real-time animation for the first-ever MultiVersus NHL Face-Off on Sunday, April 14 at 3:30p, on truTV and Max’s B/R Sports Add-on. Warner Bros. Discovery characters will take center ice in a fully animated presentation featuring a matchup of the two most recent Stanley Cup champions, Colorado Avalanche at Vegas Golden Knights. The show will merge two different tracking technologies, NHL EDGE positional data (NHL Puck and Player tracking) and Hawk-Eye Innovations optical tracking to generate realistic character and player avatar movements.

Cooler Master, a new sponsor of the 2024 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, will stage the event’s first-ever simulated racing tournament, the Cooler Master Dyn X Race Challenge, throughout the April 19-21 race weekend.
